Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Wool is itchy because of how it is processed. What happened was the large wool processors changed the chemicals they used to process wool making it much cheaper to produce BUT the wool absorbed the chemical so despite repeated washing if remained itchy.
But the large scale producers made so much money they didn't care they were putting people off wool for close to the skin clothing!!

The reason I am so proud of you is: I'm the generation who fought for girls to wear slacks to school, to take shop instead of home ec, to get bank loans without a male cosigner, to get credit cards without a cosigner. I fought, not for 'equal rights', because we are so different, but for equal opportunity.
To see you DOING all the things I fought for but am now simply too old to participate in 🤣🤣🤣, is music to my ears.
YOU make the exhausting life long fighting worth it.

I'm from the same generation. It was in 1975 when men said women could wear trousers to work but only with a matching jacket. In 1971, a man told me that women couldn't drive busses because they ware all too weak. Half a century later, videos like this one make a mockery of such ridiculous reasoning.

One day at a time Teresa. If you live near a local pool maybe they have a hot tub to treat yourself weekly. This is what I did as I am very physically active like these two ladies are. In 2017 I bought from Costco, delivered to my door right to the front porch, a small hot tub for 2 people and never looked back on sore muscles again! I insulated under it with 5 inches of stryofoam, and put some more insulation, rock wool, around all the sides keeping it in with reflecto bubble wrap. With the aftermath of hurricane Fiona, and living on 8 acres of old spruce forest, which a lot of the trees snapped off or up rooted, there is a lot of physical work do get this forest and trail system restored. Working with chain saw operators lifting and pulling huge and medium size branches, some to road side, means sore muscles after a 3 hour work bee. Knowing there will be a hot tub ready .... after the dogs get fed and cuddled, helps keep that motivation energy fueled. Food for thought if you can find a hot tub to treat yourself once in a while. It feels amazing on the sore muscles....and wonderful for the mental health balancing act we all have to work on. You got this Teresa!💯👍💪☺❤‍🩹🇨🇦

Jaz's mom was probably thinking of the fiberglass stuff they call "glass wool". (It's the stuff that's made with tiny shards of fiberglass)
You have to use heavy leather work gloves to handle it or you'll end up getting super itchy and/or with a red irritated rash.
This Haverstock wool looks amazing! I wish it had been around years ago when our house was built in the early part of the last century.
We did a major reno (down to the studs) of the entire first floor soon after we bought it and the walls were full of the stuff. And it was "loose" glass wool that didn't have the protective paper on both sides of it!! 😬 What a nightmare!
Great job ladies! But, of course, we've all come to know that the two of you rock at everything you set out to do!
Love to the pack from the Adirondacks! 💜🐾💛🐾

It's great that you're insulating the garage. Realize that you will still need a heat source in there to keep temps above freezing. On your light switches being at back and front door, you need to run a 3-wire with ground. A 3-way switch (for two switches for multiple lights) requires 3 wires to operate.

Hey, Prince Edward Island checking in with you to ladies again! Nice to see such fun and busy happening with wonderful team work! Hurricane Fiona here on the North shore certainly keeps us busy as well. Cool about the wiring you two did. I will have to try it on the next small build. I agree with multiple ways of heat sources. The country home here is mainly heated by wood that I selectively log off the 8 acres, there is an oil furnace I turn on only when I am traveling during Winter months. The ICF extension planned for 2023 Spring, three stories with a full basement, will have 2 or 3 heat pumps. It is all an open design as it is mostly for a play area for the dogs I rescue, on the main floor. I did all the basement ridge joists with 4 inch thick styrofoam so that blocked significant drafts. Quite amazing the warmer difference during the winter when using the air tight stove. I look forward to seeing how the cabin will be insulated....it seems quite chilly in your cabin in the mornings....hang in there girls! You got this! I think you may have wanted to use heavier wire (too late), so you will probably want more circuits to run your power tools on or you will keep popping breakers. You will probably also want to install double boxes by the doors if you want to have outdoor lights that are controlled by switches in the garage. Just some thoughts.

I don't know if it's code of not but I've seen builders put protective metal tabs on the studs to protect you from drilling or nailing into a pipe/electrical line. I've also seen them use something that looks like a 2" metal pipe (stud width) and run the wire through that. Same principle, keep nails, drills etc away from electrical wiring.

I used to make that rustic furnature, like you used to see in Cabins all over, about 20 years ago, easy to make, like willow chairs, tables, bed frames, etc. I Jst bought a book or 2 of making rustic furniture, I would sell it on consignment at Art Galleries in Seattle when I used to live there. Woodworking stores have those kind of books, but Amazon sells books like that too. You need to buy a spoke shaver bit for your drill, and a Hole saw bit. You have enough trees, wood around, I also made those Adairandak chairs like you have in your yard

Im not a certifies spark, but spent time as an sparkies mate. When you are running several cables on long lengths, run out the wires the length you want & then thread them through the timbers togeather. If you pull the wires through singulary, you run the risk of friction burning the stationary wire in the hole (Nooo 6:49 & 7:25). Good job, love your channel.

I think you ladies are very impressive, you both work so hard for what you have and it’s coming along amazingly. When I was younger I loved DIY projects and I renovated several houses, I love doing all of the renovations myself even while raising 4 kids and working as a nurse. It didn’t feel like work to me though as I enjoyed it so much. I imagine you two will have something very beautiful and the fact it will be self sustaining is really great. I can’t wait to see what you’re doing every week. 💖

Backing up small trailers is hard I drove tractor trailer for 15 years and give me a 53 foot trailer to back in any day over a short one. I'm glad to see you guys have lots of backup heat sources good thinking when we built people said I was going overboard with my heating systems I went with a large central ducked heat pump with electric furnace backup and a hole separate ducked fireplace any one of the 3 can heat this house on there own. I try not to let the electric furnace come on after it gets to cold out side the heat pump cannot keep up that's when it's time for the fireplace and it's pretty to watch as well. Keep up the great work.

You need to find a copy of "Building your own Kitchen Cabinets" by Jere Cary. probably out of print. Very well written and illustrated. Using his face frame techniques is simple and deliver excellent results. The whole concept of "story" sticks helps keep you from guessing. He is/was a vocational teacher so this written by a teacher for the neophyte. The Saw Stop saws are expensive but having "modified" my thumb after 30 years experience with the same damn table saw it is well worth the extra cost. Spend some time and make a few jigs and you can make perfect rabbet joints with a router so much easier an safer than a dado setup. Kreg makes good track system for skillsaws to breakdown large sheet goods before heading to the table saw. Again work safe, work smart and measure twice. Best of luck.
