Thankful to Sister Wei Ling for her frank and honest recall of the past ... especially incidents connected with her uncle the great master Fan Kor ( Ho Fei Fan )...one of the most illustrious stage performer of his era...I feel privileged to have seen him perform on stage then....his voice n singing as well performing skills were second to none...just as Sister Wei Ling recalls, each time Fan Kor sings the theme songs from his classic dramas, the whole hall will be wrapt in complete silence...it is no exaggeration to say that one can hear the sound even if a pin falls to the ground... iconic dramas such as The Obsessed Monk and the Azure Sea ...his captivating portrayal of Bao Yuk in episodes from Dream of the Red Chamber were well received and the rage of his time...he exuded the appeal and charisma of the character minus the sissified interpretation of most male impersonators that we see on stage these days.... Sister Wei Ling is a performer graduated from the ' University of Hard Knocks ' ..the old school training module from a Master/Disciple relationship or what is known as the ' school of little red pants '...she has so correctly pointed out that during her time, one has to bide your time and slowly rise through the ranks...from fourth level to third, third to second huadan n ultimately to be number one huadan, the first liner..by which time the performer has become a well trained all rounder and accomplished stage performer so to speak....this is exactly in contrast to many of the newbies in Cantonese opera these days who are so called ' graduates ' from the HK Institute of Performing Arts, who through luck and patronage are catapulted to be the number one huadan or mun koh sang....this malaise is especially obvious in the new crop of first liner huadans in Hong Kong...you can straightaway see through their shortcomings when you see them perform, needless to mention names...like Sister Wei Ling pointed out one must sing with ' soul ' , just as her uncle so rightly stated you are deemed to have succeeded if the audience postpones the " toilet call " just to listen till the song ended.....these days, especially the huadans in HKong just memorize the lyrics and regurgitates it out to the audience like a parrot, minus the nuance and ' feel ' and they feel they have done a good job,. Kudos to the host and Sister Wei Ling for an insightful chat over the old times...🎉
