      Furthermore, I've had this head canon idea that the underlaying purpose Greed's Ultimate Shield serves isn't so much to protect himself, but to protect his "possessions", what he cares about (shielding his possessions from damage (harm) with his physical being); he was just a little too selfish to realize it could be used that way. :P

    Without hesitation, Ling immediately offered his philosopher stone to save his friend, completely Sidelining any thought of winning back home becoming emperor of Xing. Thats a true friend.

    One of my favorite details of the entire show. Whenever a character sees the truth note the door behind them. It always has alchemical emblems on it representing their knowledge and expertise. Father's however is blank. Everything he had he took from others. He had no knowledge of his own and so his door is empty. It's such a tiny detail that most viewers would never even notice but Arakawa added it in as just a little extra note to really show the type of person Father was.

    • @CeliriaRose
      @CeliriaRose 6 років тому +45

      Also another tiny detail. The way Ed delivers Pride lying on his coat to Mrs. Bradley. It's reminiscent of the way a folded flag is delivered to the widow/family of a fallen soldier. A fitting similarity given the circumstances with both her son and her husband.

      Shouldn't there be something small for his knowledge he shared with the king, the Nation wide circle?

    • @CeliriaRose
      @CeliriaRose 6 років тому +31

      @smith22041 That wasn't his own knowledge either. He was created from truth itself by the alchemist who owned Hohenheim. So all his default knowledge came from Truth. None of it was learned or created by him.

    Father is a character full of ironies. He desired a family, but because he was too busy looking down on humanity rather than acknowledging his envy for what they have, he didn't even know how to _be_ a father and treated his children as expendable. He wanted ultimate knowledge but always stole everything rather than striving for that knowledge on his own. He never comprehended what makes humans tick on an emotional/spiritual level because of his inability to learn from the creatures he derided for their "inferiority."

    Yes, in the end, Greed dies because he realizes that his friends are all he ever needed to be satisfied. He doesn’t need power or riches. Greed really isn’t so greedy when he dies. After weakening the body of the ultimate antagonist, his Philosopher’s Stone dies out, and he fades away into the sky. Greed’s death is so wonderfully symbolic because Greed himself solves the problem of greed. In order to defeat greed, we needn’t look far and wide. The answer to getting rid of greed is to look at what we have and be thankful
    What’s interesting to note about Greed’s death is that he isn’t defeated. He sacrifices himself. Out of any of the Homunculi, it’s easy to admit that Greed’s death is the most meaningful, and even touching. always remember to sit down be humble

      Hologram Not really. In the Japanese version Truth’s voice is always clearly overlayed with Edward’s, whenever he is inside the gate. It is clearest when Truth yells “Take whatever you want!”. And when it is Father standing there, Truth’s voice is overlayed by his. I am saying this as a person who watched both the dub and the sub countless times :D

    Ed sacrificing his alchemy to bring Al back was a unique solution for them only. Because they performed human transmutation together, their souls were intertwined. This allowed Ed to go through Al's gate back to reality. Anyone else would get their bodies back in return for their alchemy, but they would be stuck in that white void. Another manga detail.

    • @kamronspencer4910
      @kamronspencer4910 5 років тому +6

      Personally I’m glad that detail got removed. I’m sure you could also spin that into some philosophical message to but to me personally this not even being an option for anyone else (not even someone with the same problems and lessons to learn as Ed) really kinda weakens the message for me.

    • @remo27
      @remo27 3 роки тому

      I don't think so anyway. If he's truly talking to God or Truth or whatever, I have no doubt he and Ed would be LET out if nothing else. Arguably, it wouldn't be a fair trade otherwise, on top of that "God" apparently likes it when people or creatures that use alchemy get really enlightened as to what it can and cannot do and it's 'place' in the world.

  • @Terranhunter
    @Terranhunter 6 років тому +24

    I think what really stuck out with Father’s talk with Truth is Father’s portal. Ed’s portal is full of detail about things he’s learned on his journey. But in the pan shot of Father’s portal there’s nothing on it, nothing at all. This signifies that, despite Father’s thirst for knowledge- for “perfection”- and everything he’s done up to this confrontation, he really hadn’t changed at all.

    • @prosesabre
      @prosesabre 6 років тому +2

      Actually Ed's portal of truth is an image of Robert Fludd's Sephirothic Tree and is the same the first and last time he goes through it. Each person's door show the core aspect of their personality (hence why mustang's showed the formula for flame alchemy). Father's empty door showed that he had no inner personality left indicating that with out his flaws (the homuncli who he removed and then died) there is no personality. An identity is made of both the good and the bad and without one there is nothing left of the other.

    • @remo27
      @remo27 3 роки тому

      @@prosesabre This is a good idea (probably true) that I've never seen anywhere else, though admittedly I never read the manga or hung out at places that are discussing the manga instead of the anime.

    This is one of the things I like most about the show. Not many people realize that despite it starting off with Al and Ed, the story is about Hohenheim. He because my favorite character when I first watched the series and the more I watched and analyzed, as well as reading the manga, I realized its all about him. Ed and Al are great but he is next level. All he had to go through, going through life with the burden of all the death of the Xerxes people, and having to get to know and talk to half of them. Seeing his loved ones die as he never aged and even having to leave his family, the only thing that made him happy in order to get a start and make the reserve transmutation circle to stop Father. R.I.P. Hohenheim, you sir are the best.

    The first Greed was melted down by Father for his most valuable part.
    Lust was killed by Mustang in a cold, passionless fury, defending his ever-hinted love interest.
    Gluttony was devoured by Pride without remorse or regret.
    Sloth was put down after a long, strenuous, drag-out fight.
    Envy committed suicide after somebody took sympathized and took pity on him.
    Wrath died at peace, succumbing to his wounds with the cycle of revenge being broken.
    Pride's sins caught up with him when his desperation led to hypocrisy, leading to his death (There's more to that, but don't want to spoil it yet).
    And the second Greed sacrificed himself after realizing he already had what he wanted.

    So alas we reach the penultimate; Greed died content, Hohenheim dies returning to his family and Father, he wanted to be God and so he gets his wish, he is with God, but forever trapped in flask again. There’s so much we can get into, Father’s door being blank, the Truth sounding a little like Ed at the end, the foreshadowing in the 4th opening, Ed fulfilling his promise and despite everything, all the shit they went through, the Elrics finally get their happy ending. The ride is almost over, just one last stop

    I think that one of the greatest things about the writing in FMA is that in their final moments, you both understand and pity the villains. They might have done horrible things, but in the end, you understand what flaws lead them to that state and you pity them that this is the fate that they meet. FMA is not only one of the greatest anime ever made. It's one of the greatest stories ever told

    This anime is a masterpiece as it teaches life's lessons involving hard work and humility. That scene with the truth and the gate shows what happens when people accept or reject the truth. Edward accepted the truth and no lives a happy and peaceful life, while father rejected the truth and he is condemn to a life of misery and suffering for eternity.

    The way the VA for Greed says "You don't even need me anymore" is gut wrenching. It really sells this feeling that Greed thought he was replaceable to Ling, that he just needed any philosopher stone rather than Ling needing him. And even if he didn't think that, it makes it so much like he wants to convince himself of it.

    I loved your comment as Truth was dissolving, "The truth within the truth," a callback to Marco's words, and I never thought about it being applied in this instance, yet it fits brilliantly. Ed faces the literal Truth, and realizes that the best way to bring back Al is to give up his Alchemy. The truth within the truth is Ed's realization that he is nothing more than a simple human, and all he needs is his friends to live his life, and opens the way to Al and back to reality.

    9:30 FMAB is based for the most part on philosophy. its main themes are mostly a reflection of the idea of 2 worlds, the world of forms which reigns over all our 5 senses and the information we receive from them. within the world of forms exists everything we can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. (what we'd call reality) the second world is the world of ideals. this world is completely empty (and in this case portrayed white to show its emptyness) within this world exists everything that is, was, or has been. everything that is, but doesn't have a form. your thoughts. your emotions, your ideals are all here. it is everything and nothing at the same time. for when there is no form, there is also limitless possibility for there to be 'something' all is one, one is all. (i hope i still make sense its kinda hard to explain properly) with this in mind this scene makes alot more sense. the white person he faces is 'truth' it is everything and nothing at the same time. it is god, the world, it is one, it is all, and it is you. it is quite litteraly your reflection in the mirror on life. now to explain the scene. Ed and Al first face themselves or 'truth/god' when they're kids, in their attempt to reanimate their mother they deny her death and as a result come face to face with truth who as a payment for them trying to step into his domain takes their body's away (their form) in return they're given a fraction of the knowledge that resides within the worlds of ideals equal to their payment. but is also because of this knowledge that they're led astray. (one can ponder all the questions of life but if he then decides it is meaningless or he has therefore already seen it because he thinks he knows 'truth'' he is blind to actual change, this is the answer the Homunculus got 'you haven't grown at all, you're still clinging to the idea of godhood and knowledge instead of accepting what you have and making the best of it) when Edward does his last transmutation he faces truth again. this time he recognizes his mistake. he says: i have your payment right here, This is my Door of Truth is it not? that means it is up to me on what i do with it, am i wrong? this is the same as saying: these are my interests, thoughts, ideals, hopes and dreams. (The truth that is ME) that means it is up to me on how to use them right? he recognizes and accepts his place in the world next to his friends, paying truth by changing what he values in life. he no longer tries to become equal or above 'truth/god'' and instead recognizes that to try to do so is futile, ' nothing has changed, i am only a tiny pitifull human, always been, i couldn't even safe a young girl that turned into a chimera'' truth notes that when you give up your portal of truth you'll never be able to perform alchemy again. (alchemy being a mirror to philosophy) he's saying by giving up what you perceive to be reality you'll never be able to have the same mindset again. are you sure you want to move on from what you call 'truth''? to which Ed hears the voices of his friends and accepts his place in this world. which is the right answer to this philosophical ponder because no matter how much you think, nothing will change on just that. you're still a tiny itsy human. so to move on one has to change their ideals and mindset, not the world. and that is the only answer that can bring peace of mind. and be considered 'correct'' not because it is 'correct'' or 'reality' but because it is the only way to move onwards in life. sorry for the row of text. if you've made it this far i hope you've learned something. FMAB is such a more complex show then on you could imagine.there is an endless amount of symbolism. from them losing their limbs on which they stand as a way of showing their wavering conviction to the way eyes are portrayed through the show to show 'truth' but also show that it is only a personal truth. not a universal one, its endless..

    There is still one more episode and be prepared to cry some happy tears.
    Edward gave away his alchemy to save his brother, and saw the truth that for all of his power all he ever was was just a simple human being. That was what made him different from the Dwarf/Father. Father was unable to see that and strive to be much more and have more power. Unlike Ed and Al who both learned and grew in the knowledge of the lesson they learned from tampering with nature, Father failed to learn anything. He paid the ultimate price -- namely damnation in despair -- for his arrogance. Ed humbled himself and accepted that he was just a flawed human being with friends to help him. That was what saved him and Al in the end.

    Please take a fine rest before heading to the finale. It's a relief to see you persist this far, and since the series is coming to an end, you don't have to push yourself too hard like you used to.
    I hope this is not included as spoiling, but it's just so wasteful to enjoy the ending with all the worries and pressure you've been under. (hug

    I like how all the sins "died":
    Gluttony got eaten
    Lust got burned by a womanizer
    Envy commited suicide because of him being ashamed of his own envy
    Wrath died peacefully
    Sloth died while being hard at work
    Pride got beaten because he abandoned his pride and then got spared by his enemy
    Greed sacrificed himself for someone else

      Mustang was a womanizer(He used to visit Madame Christmas' girls) But he was genuinely devoted only to Riza, whom he killed Lust to protect.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 6 років тому +3

      Mustang cultivated the image of a womanizer to disguise his covert operations. Notice that the code names he uses for his men on the field are all female. He also uses the girls at Madame Christmas's place as informants and Madame Christmas herself is his foster mother. So a man who looks like a womanizer but is truly devoted to only one woman defeated Lust. Better yet, he was protecting the woman he loved at the same time!

    Pretty sure this has been said before, but Father's desire and Hohenheim's desires were pretty much the same, but on a very different scale. All this time I was very against Father being a negative image of Hohenheim, but now it fits all too well.

    Бля пиздец какое же гениальное аниме. По сути, в начале он с братом поставил себя выше бога, попытавшись с помощью алхимии воскресить свою мать. Потом в начале сериала считал, что сможет снова легко вернуть тела философским камнем, то-есть опять нарушение равноценного обмена. А в конце вырос духовно и физически и пришел к тому, что это сила мнимая, и поставив себя на место, само осознав себя в качестве простого человека он решил свои проблемы. На этом взрослении основан весь сериал. Герой учится на ошибках
