How I Ended Up with 1 ROOSTER in my Airplane/Unseen end of Vacation

  • While my family and I went on a vacation to our new country home in Eastern Kentucky I Ended Up with 1 ROOSTER in my Airplane by the time our vacation was over. This was a surprising unseen end of our vacation. While we were in Kentucky we decided to fly the Cherokee Six to visit our relatives in Dallas, TX. While we were there one of my in-laws gave me a rooster to take home to our flock. My goal now is to learn about incubating eggs and grow our own backyard chickens.

    I have fond memories of feeding chicken and gathering eggs when I was young spending summers at my grandmother’s place in Lockport, LA.

      Me too buddy! I remember those days of my younghood at my grandmother's up in the mountainside of Puerto Rico playing with the chickens. They were serious homesteaders and they grew just about everything including mangos and bananas. If I had only been much wiser to pick their brain. I could have learned a lot from them.

    I finally got to go flying two days ago..... from Marana Regional (KAVQ) to Gila Bend, AZ (E63) to get "cheap" gas.... $5.17/gallon!!! That's the cheapest in the state! I was going to take our new cat that adopted us, but I'm glad I didn't! I had planned on going in the morning, but my battery was dead. That's another story. After charging the battery, I took off in the afternoon around 1:00 PM. Wooo! it was rough!!!! I had to reduce the airspeed to keep the wings from coming off! One thing I'm having trouble getting through my thick skull.... You can only fly in the morning, or very late in the afternoon, in the desert!! Take care, my friend!!

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      $5.17 is a good price today. I’ve had a lot of turbulence this year. Coming back from Kentucky into Centennial I encountered a lot of it from Kansas into Colorado. Then a lot of wind shear on final. Had to speed it up a bit. That might be my next video post. 😀

    Nice video, as always. I’d love to have chickens but we have coyote, hawk, owls, and a few lesser varmits to deal with. This is second hand but some neighbors tell me they’re feeding their chickens goat feed. It’s cheaper. Lastly, how do you quickly score 2 nice hangers. There’s none available anywhere around here in Texas. Stay safe, enjoy the country life.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      Hi buddy! Thanks for writing and interacting! The connection with you guys is the best part of all. I'm out here in the wild and I've caught a lot of wild animals throughout the property. For that main reason, just about everyone here keeps their chickens safe in a coop. I want to build a portable chicken run to move them about during the day so they can feed more naturally. Yes, chickens are pretty easy and you could practically feed them a variety of foods including leftovers. I feed them just about everything and they are healthy and producing eggs even throughout the winter months. For the hangars I've always seemed to fall in the right place at the right time. Mainly by talking to the right individuals. Prior to moving, I had talked to the airport manager and told him that I had 2 airplanes. He told me he had 2 new hangars available right next to each other. From that point on I made him know they were mine 😀. The timing was perfect!

    The homestead would be off the chain with a runway in the back🤔😂

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Many people would initially think that but landing on dirt or grass strips is a great way to damage the props and landing gears on my type of airplanes. You’d want a bush plane built for off strip landing. Another factor to consider is not being able to do instrument takeoffs/approaches. The next best thing would be a flying community but that defeats the purpose of a homestead. I much prefer a general aviation airport where everything I need is there. But I do know several people that have a grass/dirt strip on their land with a bush plane.

      @@FlyingDirty yea good idea save on feed it stupid expensive now plus its good for them to free range that's what makes your eggs good and when it starts getting dark they will go in then lock them up so something don't get them, unfortunately that happens sometimes , and yes sell them you will get so many at some point helps buy the feed

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      @@FernvalleyFarm I’m afraid at this point to let them free range because of so many predators in my area. Which is why I was thinking of building a portable chicken run to move them about so they can eat more naturally and, at the same time, keep them protected. But perhaps after I start incubating eggs and grow the flock then I’ll let those free range and see what happens.

  • @PORTMIAMIMIKE
    @PORTMIAMIMIKE Рік тому

    Hey Raul question.(1) When you land at varies airport is their a fee that you have to pay? (2) when flying locally without a destination is the only thing you need from the tower is the altitude which you're going to be flying at or you can just move around in the sky like if you where on I95? Lol
    (3) breakdown Flight plan. 👍🏾
    I hope this wasn't to much...

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Not at all but it’s common to have an overnight parking fee usually between $5-10 per night. At larger airports the fees are usually much higher so most pilots stay away from the larger airports. 2 gets more complicated. Depends on if you are under an instrument flight plan, flying under flight following, flying under a particular airspace, or just simply flying under visual flight rules out of controlled airspace. #3 is way too technical to breakdown but flight plans are not really required. But my personal preference is to file an instrument flight plan so that I can have ATC looking at me on radar and controlling traffic around me.

      @@FlyingDirtyI forgot, how long should you leave the Turbo running once you land before turning off engine?

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      @@PORTMIAMIMIKE This one is also a bit technical and there’s a lot to understand. There’s a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about this topic. The important thing to know about turbos is that oil is what keeps them cool and lubricated. So shutting the engine down while that thing is red hot is a bad thing. My advice is to not do what others think you should do for cool down. You may end up shock cooling the engine. A particularly important point of focus on turbocharged engines. It’s alway best to know the what’s and why’s and follow the recommendations for the particular engine/turbo manufacturer specifications. They are all slightly different. If a pilot knows the airplane and what they are doing they should not be on the ramp idling and potentially fouling their spark plugs. On my specific turbo, for example, the cool down is at 3 minutes below 1500 rpm’s. A good pilot who thinks ahead of the airplane and does a proper approach should be on final at around 18” around 2500 rpm’s already starting the cool down process gradually decreasing as necessary. After landing, make absolutely sure not to spool the turbo by keeping the roll always below 1500 rpm’s. I usually aim for 1200 depending on grade. Also, taxi slow and easy, particularly, on an airplane with retractable gear. Follow those procedures and by the time you get to the parking area more than 3 minutes have already gone by below 1500 rpm’s. I also lean my mixture for taxi to prevent the plugs from fouling during taxi. If, however, you happen to spool the turbo by going over the recommended 1500 rpm’s then I’d sit there and wait another 3 minutes between 1200-1400 rpm’s.

    What’s the rotation speed for Saratoga & Cherokee Six?

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hi Steve, both models vary depending on weight but full gross rotation indicated speed is 70kts for the Six and 85kts for the Saratoga. At Centennial (5885 feet) the ground moves very fast and that movement can be deceiving to pilots used to taking off at lower elevations. Great question because using the indicated speeds is critical. 😀
