The styling in this era of Peugeot was perfect - so distinctive and handsome. Great little cars and nothing handles quite as well as these - Peugeot were masters of the combo of handling/ride comfort.
I had a 1993 106 Free Style. It was a limited edition with less equipment than the base model. 954cc, 45hp, 4 gears. No tachometer, no clock, only fuel gauge and speedo. Mirrors adjustable from the outside, no cigarette lighter, no center vents. I bought it for 130€ beauce I was a poor student. But - as you said in the video - it has a great chassis, very responsive unsupported steering and only 760kg of weight. Now I have a 1993 205 1.4 Winner in my garage as a weekend toy.
WOOOOZAAA I had the same with a 1.4 diesel then a bog standard 1.5 diesel as well as a 96 rallye. 1284 cc and went like a rocket as it doesn’t come with a stereo or door cards👍👍. Absolutely loved them all😍 edit: also had a ax gt and a saxo vts. God I miss them days....
Even the 1124 goes like a bullet. Up and down the motorway at 80mph!
Peugeot ride and handling have always been superlative which is why I have bought many. They punch above their weight and this baby Pug is no exception.
My mum had a pre-facelift white 5-door 106 XN 1.1
We zipped up and down the country at 80mph in it no problem, moved my sister by stuffing it full to the gunwales etc.
A surprisingly useful small car.
I discovered back them that my staid-seeming mother was a keen driver. I knew she loved the car and one day I asked her what she liked about it and she said “the way it feels and goes around corners”...

At 4:02 this 106 looks OK underneath. For anyone buying a 106 check for rust under the boot floor and in the wheel arches, especially left rear 😵. If you buy one, unbolt the front wings, then paint the wheel arches and boot floor with two coats of Hammerite. Also coat with Waxoyl after painting. In the spring, clean the mud out of the wheel arches and repaint when needed.
This also extends to pretty much every single Peugeot ever made from the early 80s to late 90s. Otherwise rust proofing was really well done.

The jack is in the wheel once you drop it its there, tell the owner to wax-oil the spear wheel are if they rust they brake or seas on
The jack is housed in the spare wheel usually PSA arrangement - you have to find the wheel brace or have a big ol' screwdriver to lower it. Probably 1981 to 1996 was the golden age of supermini's
I completely agree that 90s hatchbacks were more fun than current ones. The build quality and refinement had improved enough that they were not just noisy tin boxes yet they hadn't been beset with all the driver aids that make you feel a bit disconnected from the driving experience. Cars that you had to drive and felt all the better for it.
We've just acquired a 1998 Zest 3 model in blue with the 1.1lite engine. 52000 miles on the clock. We got it for about £250 from a family member. We basically got it to push our son through his driving test. Interesting little motor with a whiff of oil/petrol and antifreeze going on. Love the look of it and like you said you hardly see them on the road these days. Yes, heavy steering and the offset pedals can be a challenge but hey it's different. Drove it up from Nottingham a few weeks ago to Washington and there were no problems. Actually enjoyed the drive to be fair. If it goes pear shaped around the mot well it's not the end of the world. Something a bit different and something to play with. Enjoyed the video..👍
Those blank switches next to the steering wheel is where the electronic headlight adjustment would be on the higher spec XT and XSI variants. On the XSI you would even get a dimmable instrument cluster!

Great to see such an incisive review of the dear old 106. A very underrated car in my opinion & tremendously fun to drive in town or countryside conditions. Great value for money when you think you can still pick up a half decent one for around £500 - £700!

My parents got me this exact model as my first car. Picked it up at auction for £1200 with about 25000 miles on the clock. I couldn't believe my luck haha. It was faster than my mum would've liked and the handling was brilliant. It surprised a few cars on the road!

Ive had a few of these my fav was the M reg 1.6 xsi.. They rust spectacularly on the rear. Where the boot floor seams touch the rear frame. The area behind fuel filler pipe holds lots of mud and junk rotting it out and the edges of the inner sill go as well. Great little car tho.
I have owned three 106 models a Rallye a GTI but started with a 1993 ace. Great little cars with lots of style and class and what a superb road handling. The phase 2 was even better ! It was a treat to watch this review. Many thanks !

Seemingly eclipsed by the more popular Saxo, I always thought the more venerable 106 was the more stylish and classy choice of those two, indeed, they seem to have aged better despite being a little more angular.
106 XSi was a car I really wanted back in the day and I'd take a 106 GTi over a Saxo VTS any day of the week.
I do prefer the looks of the 106

I had a 106 Mardi Gras, 1.0L. It used to belong to a driving instructor and had high mileage. By the time I parted ways with it, it had ~ 230k miles on the clock. Amazing first car and changed my opinion (in a good way) about Peugeot's forever 🥰. Tell the owner to take care of her, she's a classic.

Felt like a rear wheel drive but was actually a 106 Roland garros British metallic racing green, sunroof, full cream leather interior with red trim...alloys uprated springs...a wee 1.4i great wee motors 😎👍

I had 106 it was the 1.5 xnd in green p reg the only thing I got was a sunroof it was a very good workhorse I had it till someone run into the back of it brilliant video keep up the good work and merry Christmas

I had a 96 Escapade as my first car. It was the 1.5 diesel which was as flat as a fart but barely used any fuel.

Enjoyed this. First car was a 1992 106XN 1.0. Carb engine, 4 speed box, three stud wheels. No rear wiper, no internal mirror adjustment, no front spots. Black bumpers and instruments that came to a speedo, fuel gauge and the idiot lights (no clock...). Great car, loved it. On mine the Jack was in the spare wheel.
I've got a Renault Twingo Mk 2 - it really reminds me of this car. The door handles are just the same as in the Renault 5.
My mum used to do the school run in a 1.1 XN 'Graduate' phase 1. it was metallic grey with bright green carpets. 4 speed with a carb. Mum was always telling us how heavy the steering was! Despite that I really want one!

A very cool special model ;) Not only does it have the same chic fabric in the doors as on the seats. But it also has a very cool red carpet matching the exterior color (unfortunately you forgot to mention that). Here, however, I would miss the cool display windows at the back. I had a 1.1 106 really nippy little car and great on country lanes, not many sports cars would keep up on the twisty sections, managed to get 120mph on a downhill M40 stretch not bad at all
No way you got 120 out of a 1.1 😂, did the downhill stretch end in a cliff?
106 independance, i wouldnt want to push it past 80.

The phase 1's just look so "right" I had a dark blue diesel Graduate edition and I loved it even though the heater didn't work, the locks were knackered from being broken into and it leaked oil. It was just so much fun and mega economical.
I used to own a 1995 106 Aztec Si just like that one. I didn't realise there were only ever 333 of them, it was quite rare even when new, it seems. It was a great car, had it for about 7 years but it got written off when someone ran into the back of it. I regret now not putting it back on the road because the damage wasn't major (from the MOT history someone else later did, but seemingly only for a year). Mine was never in such good condition as that one, even then. The black plastic trims on the doors had already started to crack and flake off and had the previous owner had painted it black (where otherwise the red paint showed through) to try to hide it. The ash tray I always used to store coins it, but it would often drop down when driving along. The right speaker used to intermittently stop working, but going over a bump would get it going again! I didn't have the floor mats like that in mine, I wonder if was an optional extra, though it did have the red seat belts and carpets. Those front spot lights also meant visibility was very good with main beam at night (a lot of people used to assume they were front fog lights but they weren't as you say), though I do remember one of mine was cracked, but still worked OK. Nice to see there is still one of them left!
The jack in experience of 80/90s Peugeot’s it is where the boot closes on the striker (under the edge) basically pop head in to the boot below closure striker area hidden, some of the Citroen’s same platform the jack is sometimes under the bonnet.
I had this exact model for a few years around 2012. Great fun car to drive, fantastic handling. Unfortunately i sold it as i was only a student at the time so couldn't justify two cars. looks to have been scrapped in 2018 which is so sad. Wish i could have bought it back and restored it, these are so easy to maintain and parts remain super affordable
My first car was a 106 independence, W-reg (2000). It still had no power steering, wind up windows, manual windows. Even had 3 stud wheels like a 2cv, it did have a cigarette lighter though. I had it nearly 7 years (2006 to 2013) before a rover 75 killed it at a junction. I bought it just under 10000 miles on the clock, and it only had 35000 on it when it got hit. I loved that little car.
Funny enough the car I replaced it with (A Twingo GT TCE 100), it was only last month it surpassed the length of time I owned the 106. It had 34k on it back in 2013, and its got nearly 80k on it now. But in the last few months its mileage has gone up from say 100 miles a week to nearly 400 miles a week due to moving out of London down to Sussex. But I am just going to keep it to see how long it goes for.
So in very nearly 14 years of driving I still haven't had a car with the horn in the steering wheel, or opening rear windows....

These were great - they still retained the look of their larger relatives (like the 306).
Ooooh I had a 1998 model of one of these 12 years ago. It was "Tropical Green". 1.1 and very basic but didn't rust and you could fill the tank and drive to London and back and still be half full. I loved that car :(
I'm still sad that my evil brother got it scrapped all because the clutch went. It was mint.
Engine was bullet proof and easy to work on. Cheap tyres. Cheap parts. I think a lot of them died because of the scrappage scheme.
Sorry...more comments. I drove mine to London and back loads of times. Brighton and back three times and to Camber Sands and back. This was from Bournemouth lol. My friend and I even slept in it overnight LOL.

Mine 's 1.1 in intense green. What a great little car & as you say great mpg for a petrol & so far super reliable! Hope to get many more years running out of her!

I bought a brand spanking new 1.5 diesel Escapade Level 2 in Miami Blue in 1995. No power steering, wind-up windows and remote central locking. Gutless, but so economical. Loved it 👍🏻
That radio cassette looks very familiar indeed, sir! I do very much like the fact that the tea shelf is almost usable too. Not a fan of the pedal position in a 106/Saxo, but what can you do? Super video as always!
I bought a Peugeot 106 for £1 once. It was about as good as you'd expect a car that cost £1 to be. However it still had a couple months MOT so could be used. It totally died before it reached its next service date.
Interesting features included:
-A sun visor that had been used to store cigars and lighters. I found 17 lighters in total, shockingly the previous owner was a smoker.
-Putting the drivers seat backwards to its furthest position caused all the dials on the dashboard to stop working.
-The car at some point had a rev counter which had been replaced by an analogue clock. It still used the rev counter backing dial and the minute hand didnt work.
-Literally every panel had a dent. Including the roof.
-The passenger side door would only open from inside. The rear passenger side door did not open at all.
After it died I actually purchased another 106 (this time a slightly sporty 3 door) to see how one would be if it was in good condition. Unfortunately becuase it was a Peugeot 106 it turned out that even in good working order it was still a bit crap.
but still, £1! Cant argue with that!
There were move different EVs produced in the 90' than are today. Most European manufacturers had an EV version of their smallest models, mostly for PR reasons, but still, different local services bought them, and the typical 70-100km range was not a problem for most community services like elder care, postmen and small delivery trucks.
I have a 99 106 and love it, I should add that it is based off and shares a lot of components to the citroen ax also jack is in the spare wheel
The jack is usually under the bonet on the bulkhead around the wiper motor somewhere...It was on my 99 306 meridian anyway.
One of these was on my potential first car list. I went for a Fiesta in the end, but kind of wish I'd gone for one of these. Great cassette inside too. Roxette and Marie Fredriksson soundtracked my teenage years. Great album! 😊👍
I know this is an old comment, but I can’t help but laugh at the irony of this. Fiestas were all over my idea of a first car (very nearly bought a 2000 1.25 with under 40k miles) and ended up buying a 106 instead! I don’t know, but I find it funny how it’s the complete opposite to what you did. It is a phase 2, mind, and i still look for phase 1s popping around for sale (there is one up for under £500 as I write this comment, but I can’t afford two cars and I’m not messing about replacing the one I have) but it’s a fun thing to drive. Hope it lasts me long enough until I can insure something a bit more “”interesting,”” touch wood.
My jack on mine was inside the wheel under the car but the wheel brace was in boot. To lower the wheel and access the jack
Yep. I had a gf with a 106, she couldn't find the jack, I said look in the spare wheel and it was there.
In '99 I had a '93 Peugeot 106 Key Largo 1.0. Only 4 speed in a 90s car! ....but as light as a go kart and quite good fun.
I have a 106 1.0 45hp carb and it is a lovely car to drive.. although I plan to swap the engine and suspension from a saxo VTR

I had a ‘M’ reg Aztec bought brand new from my Peugeot dealer in Northampton - had it 3 years then bought a new 106 - great little cars at the time - enjoyed some nice holidays driving around Scottish highlands in those (before kids) - how times move on though now drive a nice Mercedes E220D estate
Nice Car! I learnt to drive in my Mum's M-Reg 106 Mardi Gras 1.1 Petrol. Great fun. Even my dad who always had fords and moaned about anything French grudgingly admitted to liking it!
Last Aztec 'Si' yes, but there are 57 Aztec 106s still on the road and 163 sitting on SORN.
The Si model was always pretty rare and there was only ever 333 on the UK roads back in 1996.

the 96 205 i bought new, came with a brand new rusty patch under the wing where nothing was sprayed on, it was destined to be rusty, i had it on company lease for a year, so i didnt care

True, most Citroën / Peugeot are the same underneath esp this Era. My Xantia is basically a 406 with hydro suspension :-)
Funny, they did a similar edition in France in 1994, the XS (which wasn't sold in the uk for obvious reasons) but it has the same trim, xsi bumpers, rear spoiler, sport interior, same color as well, although no steelies. The major difference is the engine, 1.4 EFI in 94 then the 1.6 in 95 producing 90 horsepower, with VERY short gears

Would love to see a mk1 Clio test! I have a '93 RT 3-door however,with its dented passenger door and 3 shades of red paint Im not sure if it would be of any use?
The diesels started off as a 1.4, they only became a 1.5 later, with the facelift I think. The bump from 50bhp to about 58bhp was actually useful as our 1.4 struggled on inclines to reach motorway speed. Special editions seemed to shift most 106 and 205s in those days - I remember the latter got the Inca and Aztec treatment too. Was it the 106 Kid that came with denim upholstery? My dad had a brand-new, L-reg 106 XND Graduate which did 62,000 miles in about a year and a half, mostly my doing as I'd just passed my driving test and the car was stupidly economical.Steering weighed a ton on the diesels, but there was no room for power steering pumps on the RHD models. This was sorted on the phase 2, and was very welcome on the courtesy Saxo diesels I occasionally drove. Very happy memories of the 106!
Oh, and I think the jack is in a rubbery holder inside the spare wheel - have a vague memory of it being manky living under there!
i had the 205 inca diesel, had the basics, radio cassette, nothing esle, no central locks, but PAS and a torquey 1.9 diesel (non turbo) was a good economy driver back then
Almost identical 0-60 time as a Mk2 Mini Cooper S (10.3 seconds). Not bad for an affordable non-hot hatch. Small cars do feel quicker on the road.

These were nice little cars to drive in comparison to its contemporaries of the era. Dashboard looks a lot like that in the e30 Bmw. Enjoyable video.

Those steel sports wheels always intrigued me. They were also fitted to the warm 205 XS and I think the 305 GT. They are very reminiscent of the Ford Cortina and Escort steelies of the 1970s-early '80's.
I haven't driven one but these 106s were perhaps very close in spirit to the original Mini. Haven' t heard of an Aztec Si limited edition. I have heard of the Key Largo & Key West versions, & the Independence became a proper trim level in the late 1990s. *anorak off* 😅

Nice car i have a 96 106 xsi 1.6 8v with electric windows wing mirrors and a keypad pin to start it i love it ive had it for 16 years best car ever and the rear seat bottom hole is for a bottle of coke try it it holds it perfect
I hated those keypads! Had a Saxo with one, great car but that was a pain!
I've got 2 106's & yes one has the dreaded keypad! Can't fault them for value for money & relatively fun to drive!

Learn to drive in a 1.0 xn 4speed i loved it , was nippy for what it was and very basic but the fundamentals were their fir a fun drive , im 35 now and thinking about buying a another 106 just for nostalgia 5speed tho 😂👍🏻
Go for it my friend. I currently have 2 & think they're great! Cheap to run, reasonably nippy due to weight with good all round reliability! If you shop round there's still some really nice examples out there, at decent prices!

I had a 1998 106 Zest 2 special edition with tartin blue trim. Was a fantastic car very realiable a true old school Peugeot. My first new car bought new from Rochester Motor Company in Rochester Kent. Great pacakge in the day for only £8200.00 including 2 years free insurance. One of best new cars I have ever owned, CD Player as standard and sunroof, a lot extras for special edition car. Why can't Peugeot build cars like this anymore !

I seem to recall that La Rochelle town council had some of the Peugeot EVs for a car-sharing trial.
I had an M reg 106 Madrid Gras 1.5 diesel in the same colour back in 1999. It was written off after I stupidly drove through some floodwater and got water in the engine. I’m older and wiser now 😂

There certainly wern't any carb 106 for sale into the millenium. The last 106s made with a carb were the 1.0, 1.1, and 1.4 XN, XR, and XT models in 1992. They all used either a single or double barrel single Solex.
Jack very often carried in the spare wheel the wheel brace is located near one of the light clusters I think on the right hand side used to unscrew the wheel cradle. It's not really a car you drive, you more or less wear it!
Great cars, I loved my 106 but it caught fire on it's last mot & that was the end of it :(
The jack is actually inside the spare wheel in a foam bag. You first have to remove the wheel and then you will find the jack in there!

That integrated on the dash radio cassette (with no rewind, just eject and fwd) looks like it could pump some serious bass, it must be 50X4 watts at least!........btw there was someone in the back who you didnt see, i hope your ok matt!!

Im not sure about the phase 2 cars coming with side impact bars. I have a pbase 2 saxo and recwntly had the door panel off....no bars in there...

Ive not stripped one but online spec sheets say they do. Its not always an obvious big beam, but could be on the back the inner panel
@@furiousdriving - I certainly hope they do as gotta be a plus point! The mk2 made significant advances in vehicle safety & that's something that worries me in respect of my wifes little 1991 vw polo!!
Perhaps those indents above the back seat cushion are to lift it out to lay the back of the seat flat?
