I mean for rock music it’s a blessing and a curse. It’s a good thing that the music will last for generations but it’s not healthy for the genre to have 20+ year old bands headlining the biggest rock festivals whilst legacy acts refuse to retire. Younger bands need the torch passed down to them and they need to create new subcultures and forward thinking projects. They need to do something that’s dangerous and risky instead of appealing to nostalgia.

As someone who was more into Rock growing up, I've seen this trend before. Rap has been the most expansive and inventive genre of popular music for most of the 2010s and beyond, same as Rock was during the big 70s prog era. Rock was also known as a young man's game, with a lot of 50s and 60s artists retiring in their 30s, or fading from the charts, but the 70s group didn't fade anymore. They adapted to the 80s, shifting to popular synth pop, going into glam metal, or digging deeper in their own style, while still growing their audience. Then they became dad rockers that toured till someone died since the 90s, because they built an audience that matured with them, and followed them. Hip-Hop is looking to develop the same way, as the current rappers can keep on making music into their 60s, since that's what their audience wants. The caveat is that "Rock" in it's 60s-70s "pure form" doesn't exist anymore in popular music. Alt rock is coming back again, but that's mixed with metal, rap, electronic music... you get the idea. Rap will also evolve away from what "pure rap" viewers expect and will be rejected by them.
Only because he lost to Nas. But Hov still has the respect. Drake is going to be affected the same way even tho his star still shines. Never lose a battle😅😅😅
Hip Hop is the only music genre you're expected to stop after age 30. Grown folks still have things to say, sit down and be humble. Take a listen to Pete and Bas, or Norman Payne from the UK... those old geezers be SPITTIN!!

The world has an ego problem. People identify with their skewed perspective of their identity and are so limited by their views. Sadly it seems this world is always going to strive on separation, whether that be gender, race, age, religion, etc. keeps the world from evolving in a peaceful way unfortunately.
Well said….its sad how you’re looked at as you age. What 20 something knows anything over a 40 something? I’ll never understand the “throw away’ with elders. The things they’ve seen, been through, just that experience. SMH but the 20 somethings are listened to more? So twisted.
Kendrick is really the only respected, loved by old heads and critically acclaimed rapper we have of this generation, no? I would have said Kanye too but no one takes him or his opinions seriously anymore...
Kanye lost all merit as a rapper for me when it was exposed that he doesn’t write his songs. He’s an excelente producer one of the bests and when he raps he is a flow master but I can’t regard him as a rapper. Rappers write their own songs.
I thought Cole too but then I realize he's not as critically acclaimed as Kendrick, his albums aren't "classics" and 2024 has just not been a good year for him. Sucks cause he wanted to retire in a year or two after the "Fall Off' gracefully but the whole apology beef thing and the Grippy verse has put a stain on his legacy.
@@mr.equity1120I mean he wrote his own music for a long time. Arguably some of his best music. Just cause he’s off his rocker now doesn’t mean he wasn’t talented. He ain’t no more tho.

I appreciate how gracefully Andre 3000 stepped away from rap because he knew he was past his best days. While he's always gonna be one of the greatest emcees of all-time, his self-awareness is a breath of fresh air within a genre where some of these guys inching close to retirement are still rapping about immature things.
That’s why his verse on Life of the Party hits so damn hard, you can tell it’s something he NEEDED to write and let out. He was rapping for himself on that track.
Its plenty of nice rappers out there. Most of yall are only focused on who's the most popular and waiting for the industry to tell you who's the most popular.
What you’re not grasping is that those artists get no streams and that’s what solidifies a genre of music’s mainstream success. No shit there are great rappers but if no one knows they exist it’s irrelevant. And if only mid rappers go mainstream with the occasional exception this will spell the death of a genre.

So long as Strange Music/Tech keep pumping out classic after classic annually, just like they’ve been doing for the last 30 years, and continuing to deliver the best live show you’ll see, I feel like there’s nothing to worry about.
Never thought of this. When drake ye Kendrick, Nas and Cole retire who do we have to look forward to? Yeah there’s a handful that are great but none of them are consistently putting out better and better projects that hold the test of time. Someone who drops a banger but the album is a flop isn’t even close to being the same as what we currently have with the big 3.

There literally is no problem. Just like in every walk of life, there will be someone that will take the crown out of the big 3. It doesn't matter if that takes till all three of them rapped till their 40's. Clearly the listeners still love their art
I just think rap fans are aging. And older fans still want to hear rap from their favorite artists. In the 90s and 2000s most rap fans were young. That has changed. Almost every age demographic likes rap now.
I think part of the issue is that the labels don't want to nurture actual talent. They just want to make a quick buck off of trend chasers with an image
Been saying this forEVER. Any other genre will have musicians come in at any age and be great. The issue with Hip-Hop though is that the industry has manipulated it to be a 'trend' and most rappers either die or fizzle out 25-27 if they're lucky to make it that far. We're just now getting to a period were people want to hear things at different ages. The younger portion of Gen Z is the start of this open mindset. They can listen to art and wisdom at any age. Early Gen Z couldn't do that. Millennials couldn't, Gen X, etc.
This is why I hate how popular trap & mumble rap became. It sparked a generation of rappers that relied entirely on their beats carrying them. Now that those beats aren't banging anymore we see them for the talentless hacks they are. Thus we remain in our comfort zone of established artists because the industry has lost the ability to discover and develop new artists, & instead subjects us to whoever's trending on tiktok that particular week.
Along with the bad taste the recent beef has put in our mouths, the deaths of the countless up and coming artists that were killed by some random beef or hometown issues is actually insane
People acting like 40 is already having both feet in the damn grave. 40 aint even that old, if rappers want to keep dropping let em. If the shit is good people will listen, if its not then they wont, its pretty simple.
Honestly music is life Fr I feel like the Oder you get the wiser your music becomes as long as you alive and love music keep it going till you drop Fr I feel like at all them mfs stoped worrying about age we could have so much better music
the internet has shortened the lifespan of a music artist down so much that it's very hard to build a long term base of support and respect in the same way you could back in the 90s/00s/10s, especially with all the one hit tiktok song rappers that come out.

I wonder if if rap is about to go through what rock/metal went through around the 2000s. The genre started to slow down, and rap began to blow up mainstream.
The fact is the new generation all has adhd…they can’t listen to a 3:13 seconds track. They can’t take in real lyricism like Nas, Eminem, Benny the Butcher. I do like the new age beats but Dr Seuss can rhyme on them beats…these kids on too much drugs so they tend to listen to mumble rap …I wish age wasn’t an issue and it’s only with hip hop no other genres. Boombap is dead I agree though😢
Hip Hop has a TALENT problem. This isn’t even a debatable subject if you compare the skill of old rappers and the new crop. It isn’t an old head problem…it’s a new talent problem. And using Soulja Boy and 3k (who’s supremely talented but don’t wanna rap) really doesn’t drive you point home. Drake, Cole, and Dot were the last true hip hop superstars. None of the new artists have stepped up to create new timeless music
it’s insane to think that my generation’s stars were taken away from us so soon. we’re in a weird place in rap where the industry is oversaturated with everyone being a copy paste of another artist n we want music from the big 2 (f*ck drake), but they can’t rap forever. no one that’s on the rise has shown a glimmer of true star power so we don’t know who gets the torch. until something innovative and groundbreaking is done, rap as a whole will drop even more significantly than it has in recent years

What’s happening is all the old rappers stick around for so long there isn’t enough or any chances for new rappers to fully emerge they always get shut down
All the new generation rappers that we thought were going to come along to replace the current generation either died or fell off tremendously. The ones that are left got rich and got lazy and you can hear it in their formulaic music. Rappers from way back in the day weren't really retiring gracefully, they were being pushed out of relevance by the new and better rappers that were just out performing and out selling them. In the current generation of rap, the rappers that are pushing 40 are the one's selling the most, still breaking records to this day and have the best selling tours. Why would they retire when they've entered into an infinite money glitch because nobody from the new generation is good enough or hungry enough to take the spotlight from them? On top of that even if someone tried their best to take the spotlight, these guys (the big 3) are still out rapping 95% of the new generation so who tf is even good enough to take the spot?
Might actually be the lack of creativity, fighting for something and doing your own thing. Part of the reason might actually be ( And I'll sound like 40 now) Social media, it has taken something important away from us, maybe our own thought's idk, it's complicated to explain. I just feel like we're not moving in a good direction
@@realer2748why does an artists age bother you so much? Mentally what is wrong with you people? Is it just young nonsense? Cause you sound crazy lol. He 33 not 68.

Hip Hop / Rap Music is a relatively new genre with unique problems. I feel blessed and fortunate enough to see first hand history in the make right now as we speak
Old heads dont need to hang it up, the culture is just disrespectful to aging rappers. Rap is ever evolving and each gen is gonna have their own icons, but there is no need to clown old heads for not selling like they did when they debuted. At some point new fans taper off and you just have your core. Make your music for them.
Past generations were hungry and competitive. The fight to get to the top of the mountain bred elite success. The current generation are more content functioning in their own lanes and farming streaming algorithms.
It’s not just in hip hop, everyone in everything is getting worse in quality and effort. Blame social media or AI, but originality and talent are lost. The goats of the future are going to be mid compared to the goats of our past.
Great Video and topic as an 90's guy i think we need 35+ rappers, the problem is they pander to young audience instead of making music for actual adults, im sure older people dont want to be stuck listening to the same songs from back in the day, but one thing I will say is that A.I. will change that, we will start seeing new rap music that will appeal to the older generation its already happening with boom bap slowly rising back up
feel like if those old big three leave, we would eventually get a new big three. Not right away, but past little time... Some artist would think of it as like: Now that those 3 are gone it might be my turn to get there. Im talking about denzel, JID, 21, trav, etc
All great points in your video. I'd also say, for decades the hip hop superstar always had a protégé or a certain neighborhood would work together before they blow up. Now these kids put music on soundcloud, get a distribution deal, a bunch of features and put out a trash album then disappear. If they still came up under Ogs then they would have time to learn and slowly make a name for themselves. Dre did it for Snoop, Puff did it for BIG and Mase, Tribe did it for Busta rhymes, Wayne did it for nicki and Drake etc...

It would be much more accurate to say we have a problem with lazy dum-dums of all ages trying to correlate making good music with age/gender/orientation/skin color/etc instead of effort, (how many rappers even play any instrument or know anything about reading/writing sheet music AT ALL?) natural talent, work ethic, heart, and putting the music before a paycheck.
These people clearly love rap, it’s their passion it’s their blood, they will never stop making, they’ve fell in love with the game but now it seems they are trapped incapable of letting go what they love
Part of the issue is rap is largely different nowadays than from the old heads. Rap used to mainly focus on lyrics and that was the real skill part, nowadays lyricism has taken the back seat to having someone just write you a catchy pop tune.
Its the ambition that has been lost. People are content to just enjoy the music rather than make it. The industry is less aggressive and the newcomers are struggling more because hip hop was kinda supposed to be underground but especially nowadays with how popular it is, people just don't have the ambition and drive to replace the big names
I would say one of the major reasons for this is probably oversaturation rather than just the fact that there's no one to take replace the greats. There are some really good rappers out there who are young and release fire music but due to all the noise we never really hear them. Coupled with the fact that our current greats not retiring plus all the ridiculous glazers out there who will never acknowledge when something new is better than one of the big 3

Nas and the few rappers who rhyme after 40 are just gifted lyrically. Not every rapper can pull this off.

Hip Hop has a TALENT problem. This isn’t even a debatable subject if you compare the skill of old rappers and the new crop. It isn’t an old head problem…it’s a new talent problem.
