I never knew my duellist had anything on the inside I could fiddle with! I just got it last week and I really love it. Now I can't wait to hear it after those minor adjustments. Thanks!
Nice video… Love my 2.0 duellist … I’m typically a set-forget-it type player & find minor “upgrades” don’t matter much after the new pedal “honeymoon” period wears off …. if you’re not A/B’ing side by side, I find slight improvements are hard to discern 👍
Cheers! Yeah, generally agree and obviously to make comparison videos i have to get into some detail to help people make up their mind. But in this case, i didn’t keep the older duellist on the board but with the upgrades i would definitely put it on the board when i need it - just less pedal-like overall, which is great! 🤟🏼
Great demo, James. The changes are subtle, but there and the external switches are a big functional improvement. The String-Singer into the Heavy Hand with your Tele sounded awesome.
Awesome demo! The amp like mods really makes the sound more “alive” :). Thanks again for demoing the pedals with both single coils and Humbuckers! Cheers
Subtle but noticeable. For me the highest improvement is to have the switches outside. I have never liked internal dip switches in pedals since I'm too lazy to acess and play with them. The simplest the better!
I unsure about this. Having the dips on the inside makes me play the pedal and decide on a sound i like (or dont!), Then screw the back on and forget. Having the dips on the outside is nice for access but I'm sure I would continue to mess with them if they were as accessible as that. Same with my Broadcast. Initially I couldnt understand why they didn't just add another pot on the top instead of the internal trims. But in reality, spending the time dialing those trims in really aquainted me with the pedal and I havent moved them since. Same with my Duellist once I had selected the dip config I like I have not opened the back since...
Finally got to order one today. This pedal sells out so fast, so im just excited to finally try one. Im currently using a Kasleder Fx Toxic Twins and that pedal is phenomenal. Doesnt get into higher gain territory on either side in my opinion unless stacking both sides, but it's extremely dynamic and its low gain tones are outstanding. Just a fantastic pedal. Im curious on stacking the Blues Breaker side of the Toxic Twins into the Blues Breaker side of the Duellist to see if it gets somewhere into that KoT territory or not. Probably not, but it will still be fun and interesting to try out. 😁
Great comparison. Just coming into the interest of this pedal and really like your honest approach to it. The newer dip switches really make so much more sense of the flow of the pedal.
Had the original Duellist, and then switched to the updated version. Really like the DIP Switches on the side now! The Amp Like settings seem to add more clean headroom.
How does it compare to the Protein for you? I know they both have a blues breaker style side, but the Protein has a Noebels style green channel instead of a tube screamer. I’m not a big TS sound fan, so the Protein seems like a better option for me.
Great comparison James, thank you. I'm in the market for the Duellist and was waiting for someone to do this to hear them both. Fantastic work as always, great playing wish I had your ability well done 🙂
I just subscribed after watching your Morgan MVP23 review. I have one of these I got recently and this has really helped me map out a tone tour! Cheers!
I have been trying for years to get a TS/BB style overdrive pedal that I'm happy with ...I have Klon(Ceriatone) that I love, but I needed more OD tones available on the pallet. The Duellist has solved that problem for me ...Jesse has struck on something with this pedal!
Hi James. I was surprised to see that I wasn't already subscribed to your channel, I thought I was. Anyway, I agreed with your opinion on the Duellist video you previously made. The String Singer side was a bit too compressed for my taste. I recently sold mine, but now I really miss it. I loved the Heavy Hand side and primarily used that side when playing. I bought the Heavy Hand pedal but to be honest it wasn't anything like the Heavy Hand on the Duellist. I'm happy to see Jesse Davey make the mods for the new Duellist. I hope to eventually get one some day. But I would love to get the one you're giving away. I feel so stupid for selling mine. BTW....you literally have the best collection of gear on UA-cam. Thanks for the videos
Thanks for the sub! This new duellist really gives me the feeling that i couldn’t quite get from the original one - especially on the string singer side. A real clever set of changes by Jesse. 😃 thanks! Let’s see what goodies i can add to the channel this year! Cheers
I'm at work right now and can't really deep dive into your demo but I'm sure it will help me to either chose between old and new. Thanks for doing this
Just have for a few days the Duellist pedal ( old version ) and it took me hours to figure out how all the tone knobs/switches and distortion interfere each other but at the and a figured it out and a think it's a good pedal ; but you are right : I missed the natural compression and you are so right : you might hear it not so clearly but you feel it when you are playing . At the end that was a great minor for that pedal for me . Note : I saw this and your earlier video about this pedal after I draw my conclusion about this pedal . And that was not easy because of all the possibilities with this pedal. That means for me that this are great reviews ; you really got the ears for it !!!
Have you ever played the HoneyBee Double Trouble pedal? If so, how would you compare it to the Duelist pedal? Thanks for the demo, exactly what I was looking for!
I had a duelist, had to sell it, would love another, there's a guy I know who makes spot on clones of the older ones. I have one of his soloists and his blues powers. Sold both my originals cuz his were so good
I am surprised this version wasn't the four knob version like the single pedals are. That'd give you much more versatility, in addition to the 3 new switches on the side versus the Chinese clone.
for a marshall mini jubilee and a les paul owner, but a srv huge fan... ahahahaha, which one do you recommend? blues power or 2022 duellist? in the future i will buy a strat, but keep with the jubilee.
@@Jaques355 you are right the duellist is more versatile for sure! The blues powers has one incredible sound and feeing really, and i think will help more to make a marshall amp feel more like srv but you will enjoy either!
Great video! Can anyone please talk me into this V2 vs. a Origin Effects RivalDRIVE original or Compact. They look nice too. I played a Way Huge Doubleland pedal today- it sounded great too! It happened to be sitting waiting for me at a local Guitar Center. Got me hooked on this type of tasty tone that I did not even know I was missing...but wow.
Hey James… the Tele tones with Duelist on the outdo were great! Thanks for the content… I can’t wait to hear it with a dirtier amp. Remember my new amp dilemma? I’ve settled on an amp, and just waiting for my order to be finalised. Cheers Chris
Yeah - i mention it at some point in the video and maybe i should make a comparison. Generally the duellist has higher output and more grunt, the protein is sweeter - more mayer sort of sound i think
Hi James a recent new subsciber, loving your content. I don't know if you know or have tried but i am wondering how this pedal of the blues power sound into a Fender Tone Master.
Great demo as usual, very insightful. Too bad these literally never seem to be available here in Germany at the various dealers, whether old or new version. I’ve been looking for years.
@@JamesOnGuitar Yes, so it seems. A few retailers here carry them too, but never any stock. I am too lazy or impatient to preorder, so that’s my fault haha.
Great video! This pedal sounds amazing! I've been searching for a BB and TS combo pedal for a while without breaking the bank. I've wanted a Duellist for a while but can't afford one haha Do you have any other BB+TS pedal combinations that you recommend?
Haha yeah i had a new switch ready at an amp tech during one of the lockdowns but i guess i left it too late and he moved on! This new one definitely makes this pedal better. Cheers
I sold my Duelist as well as a Blues Power. I actually don't like dipswitches. Just make a great sounding pedal with a few knobs to turn and maybe a toggle or two. When I saw the external dipswitches I just shook my head. Not for me.
The thing about those switches is they're not meant to be fiddled with a lot. It's for people who play with different gear from time to time. "Where did my bass go", flip a switch and there you go. It's an effort to get the same sound from different riggs.
At the moment, the Duellist, but i never gave the Gladio a full go really and then put it on the shelf - i’ll give it a blast again and make a video i think, cheers
That is a hard question to answer! Ultimately i think the string singer into a pretty hot fender amp is ideal. But the blues power basically gives you that without having to go too hot on the amp 👌🏽
Had a duelist, very similar complaint about the compression, something about it just didn’t feel “right.” I know tube screamers are supposed to cut low end and I’m more than okay with that, I tend to like a tight low end and I don’t 100% rely on pedals for my distortion since I run my amps cranked, but I found it very difficult to get a “sweet spot” on the low end with the earlier version of the duelist and it was also either very ice picky or muddy with the high end. Those things appear to be solved with this revision. It was one of those pedals similar to the 1981 DRV I had. Very nice, but I passed on it. The 1981 was cool looking and sounded good, but it ultimately lost to my danish hanwided t-Rex mudhoney which is cheaper and still undefeated imho when it comes to Rat style pedals. Ditto with the duelist vs my VS10 valve screamer.
I could really use your old Duellist pedal, great comparison James, superb playing, nice control. The new Duellist sounds crisper to me, you had more articulation and a thicker tone but, like I said to me! Just one man's opinion.
As in the Ceriatone Klon clone pedal? I did a video coupla weeks ago with it comparing to an original klon 👍🏼 and i gave away the horsebreaker pedal last year, one side of which is the centura

the older duellist warmer to my ears

Cheers Rich - yeah, clever Jesse, just turned this pedal into a real workhorse i think!
Intro sounds like an old blues 45. Very nice my man!
😃 cheers man. Love that sort of thing 🤟🏼
Gerald here from Singapore. I was deciding between Gladio and the Duellist. You just won me over.
Great review as always. Keep rockin'.
Cheers Gerald! Enjoy 🤟🏼

cheers! Yeah, a small but noticeable difference for sure!
That intro tone is heavenly!!
Subtle but noticeable. For me the highest improvement is to have the switches outside. I have never liked internal dip switches in pedals since I'm too lazy to acess and play with them. The simplest the better!
Yeah, totally agree. Was a novel idea to have inside, but a bit silly really! Anyway, now the switches are really great - happy days!

They should put a hinged cover over the dip switches to keep the dust out. Gonna be a problem down the road.
That is a good point!

Blues Power! 😃 it is just a great sound in a box whereas the duellist will probably accentuate whatever your amp is already doing

Worldwide 👍🏼
