Saint You Should Know: Augustine of Hippo
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- St. Augustine did not live the sort of life that you would expect from a saint and doctor of the Church. And yet, his life witnesses to the incredible power of God to convert our hearts and transform sinners into incredible disciples.

Augustine is a n example of one who experienced God's mercy and a radical conversion to christ. He and Paul the apostle are examples that conversion is possible.
Augustine paved the way for what would be later known as protestant/reformed
Why convert if you are already Catholic? Renewal is obtuse. Evangelization isn't necessary.
I think you can go even earlier to St. Matthew.
He completely distorted the scriptures and embraced many to live in shame and guilt.
@@blackfalkon4189its not Augustine fault about called so Reformist wrongly interpretation and cherry picking argument.
Augustine taught us to submit to Rome, Roma locuta, causa finita est.
Our Church is so blessed because of St. Augustine. Whoever said, 'Saints have a past and sinners have a future" is truly right. St. Augustine, pray for us.
He completely distorted the scriptures and embraced many to live in shame and guilt.
My kind of Saint. My favourite would be St.Thérèse of Lisieux, not so much for her holiness but for her humanity. She had doubts and many struggles and she felt she had nothing special to offer. Like many of us, she dreamed of doing great deeds but the reality of her daily life was quite mundane. She wasn't even great at praying; often falling asleep. She came to the Lord with empty hands but she learned from Him that there was one thing she could do; she could be a person of love. I have very many doubts but I always find encouragement and inspiration from St.Thérèse.
Thank you for recommending St. Therese of Lisieux. I often think that anyone who has no doubts has not really understood Christianity. God becoming human and sacrificing himself? That's quite much to accept. But that's why I think it has to be true. If men had invented it they would have invented something more logical and easy to accept.
Or how St. Augustine said it: If you understand it it's not God.
I’m so glad you said this, I’ve never heard about her in this sense and it is so inspiring in an odd way. God bless!
Augustine paved the way for what would be later known as protestant/reformed
“She wasn’t even good at praying” had me LOL
Oh i didnt know the doubts part of her. Thanks
Saint Augustine is so amazing to me. His story is so inspiring because he shows us that we ALL have a chance to redeem ourselves and do great things for God!
*that we all have a chance to be redeemed by Christ
_"he shows us that we ALL have a chance to redeem ourselves"_
actually Augustine paved the way for what would be later known as protestant/reformed
Thank you so much you gave me an idea on my essay for saint Augustine 😂😂
@@Usual_flex4 same here😂😂
It really is. As I read confessions and saw "lord make me chast but not yet" I went.... oh my god that's me...
Currently discerning a vocation with the Order of Saint Augustine. Pray for me!
May the Cincture of Our Lady of Consolation encircle you that you may offer yourself to God and to His church.
I think Agustinians are very underrepresented and after reading him for a couple of years I realized that, we as Catholics have not done enough preaching his teachings. I hope we can recover his legacy.
I too am discerning a vocation with the Order of Saint Augustine. My prayers go with you.
I hope everything went well!
More of Saints you should know please. Like a series on them. Thanks Padre Casey.
I will definitely start to include more of them.
@@BreakingInTheHabit can you please do Saint Patrick . Thanks Padre Casey.

I chose St. Augustine as my patron saint because his feastday was on my birthday! I have come to realize that it was by no means a coincidence
St. Augustine's teachings on Just War had immediate impacts on my life. This sounds very remote or abstract. I'm only alive and sane because of his teaching. I write this with tears in my eyes.
St. Augustine inspires me so much. The book confessions is like the most important book after the bible to me. This man was a genius so ahead of the time.
My patron saint and someone who was crucial in me discovering the fullness of my faith and finding the Church! Never clicked on a video so fast.
Same! Reading the Confessions in my freshman year philosophy class in college changed my life
Right there with ya
He wasn't a saint....he was another catholic antichrist....who condoned that the church could kill Christian saints
@@aarond.1931Nice pfp
I'm reading "Confessions" for the first time, I didn't really know much about Augustine's life beforehand. So far the book has me enthralled with it's sheer honesty and relatability, was not expecting a fourth century Saint to have lived in many ways as I do, falling into worldly vices and straying from God. A wonderful piece of literature, for the mind and spirit. St Augustine, pray for us.
Approved by an Augustinian friar.
"Oh, plans, how God laughs at them."
How I even laugh about ending up a friar when I was only thinking of the priesthood XD
As someone who struggles with sexual sin, this helps alot
I suffer from sexual sins too... The sin of mastubration... I hate this sin...
I recommend reading about Saint Mary of Egypt
Old habits must be replaced with new ones, if you can go a month with Jesus being your sole focus every time you get tempted, you can go the rest of your life with this sin defeated. Make a new habit, set a new record, avoid things that tempt you like the plague, protect your self like you would protect a child, set a new desire, a desire to be closer to God and have your heart set free. Life is all about overcoming struggles and persevere! For Jesus loves you and picks you up every time you fall. Keep running in faith. We are made new in Christ.
Amen.

I was secretly hoping you would make something about Augustine. Happy late feast of Augustine and of Monica! All the best from Chicago :)
I have. Read the confessions. It is a masterpiece. Because of its honesty. It is his story, and he told it bravely.
@@jamesmorrissey2297 I've been meaning to read the entire thing for some time along with City of God. That's why he is so great--we all see a little bit of ourselves in him, and we all know we can change for the better just like he did.
James Morrissey I'm reading it right now
Augustine paved the way for what would be later known as protestant/reformed
Thank you for bringing in my name saint, Monica, who wad not given the credit she deserved for patience, forbearance and never ending example that a strong mother of a miscreant son, never losing hope for his redemption. She followed Augustine through his debauchery (who is this illegitimate child?) until he overcame his wastrel ways & Monica must have been mightily relieved at his eventual! transformation. Yet, he STILL sanctified the concept of ORIGINAL SIN... to excuse himself from his decades of profligate ways? Sure, blame the woman, thereby cementing his own mother's blameless guilt: ORIGINAL SIN. blamelessness,
I'm from Annaba, modern Hippo and am really sad that we don't learn about St. Augustine in our history classes.
He tortured 1000's of your Christian Ancestors who wouldn't accept the Catholic Pagan Beliefs and Rituals. Nothing to be proud of.
@@adamdilem941 Shut up protestant.
St agustine an inspiration to all youths living in 21st century
What I love about Augustine is he is so real, he is so approachable. His life and experiences are really not much different than our own - leaving home, studying, screwing around, ambitions. Very relatable.
He's one of my favorite saints, along with St. Ignatius of Loyola! Great sinners truly can be great saints. St. Augustine, pray for us!
What I love about his story is his mother's sacrifice👌 I think he owes his vocation to his mother who can teach us mothers👵
He completely distorted the scriptures and embraced many to live in shame and guilt.
My parish here in Rio de Janeiro belonfs tô Discalced Augustinians friars so we have lots of dear st Augustine and we love it! Pax et Bonum!

Saint Augustine of Hippo amen🙏🙇♂🙏.
About the City of Saint Augustine, FL, the pronunciation might be an anglicized pronunciation of the Castilian Spanish: San Agustín.
That's a good point. Never thought of that.
Perhaps it's the spelling that was anglized to fit the Spanish pronounciation being that it started as a Spanish settlement. Maybe San Agustín was the original name.
Why is the city of San Agustin anglicized while San Francisco and San Antonio are not?
@@enixbluerain7213 The British took over at some time changing most local names to english, at that time all of the Spaniards residents took off and moved to Cuba, then it was returned to Spain, but later ceded to the United States and I guess the English name stuck. However it continues to be called San Agustín by all hispanic speaking Floridians.
St. Augustine is definitely one of my top relatable saints! Love his prayers and writings, to have only a fraction of his holiness would be a great blessing
I recently became a Catholic, I’m 16 and my religious journey has been quite a long one, but in January this year I came to my local Catholic Church and eventually was baptised and confirmed and received the Eucharist on the easter vigil, I try to go to mass every day now and I actually miss going to mass during the day😂 I’m so glad I came to Catholicism
The beauty of St. Augustine is the realization that no matter how low we may have gone, there can ba Saint of God still residing in us.
See / listen to the hymn, "Little Jesu."
It was a greate video my father. I loved it. Can u make a video about St.Stephan of Hungary? Greetings from Hungary 🇭🇺

Just wanted to thank you again for your words of wisdom and your points of view. THANK YOU!!!
Saint Augustin was born in Algeria from a Berber family wich is surprising because today Algeria is a Muslim country however algerian people really like saint Augustin and their are proud of him.
You chose wrong religion.
What a pity. I wish your country changes it.
I'm really glad that this video has come out!!!!! God bless you Father♥️
Wonderful Father Casey! Absolutely perfect. Blessings to you and your priesthood
Well done sir, with people like you the Church is in good hands.

So needed this. Thank you and God Bless!! Please pray for me. Thanks.

My middle name is Augustine, after the Saint from Hippo. At every graduation ceremony I had to listen to the speaker mispronounce my middle name! You know, the Florida way! I screamed YES! And laughed out loud at your final add-on comment at the end. THANKYOU!😇

Amazing Father Casey!❤❤ Very informative. I hope you keep making videos which focus on one saint at a time. We have so much to learn from all the great saints of the Catholic Church. ❤❤
My name is Augustine. I searched for this video because my life resembles the life of this saint. I pray that I may inspire many who feel dirty and broken come to Christ.
I love your work. This was your very best video, and they are all amazing. Many blessings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Be mightily encouraged! Your brother, John
I studied for 12 years in an Augustinian school. Once I moved to college, St. Augustine is still mentioned! Really a great role model especially for the youth of today!
I love this Saint. I think he is a good role model for many young people today who struggle with sins of the flesh. Awesome conversion story!
Been looking into Saint Augustine recently and bought 'City of God'. Really glad you did this video and looking forward to more in this series!
Thank you Padre. This was beautiful. Latinos we know the right pronunciation.
Jaja, verdad que si
Thanks, Padre. Fantastic Cliff Notes version.
I was just baptized over Easter and Augustine is my patron saint. Thank you for making such an informative and interesting video on him.
His conversion was thanks to St. Monica, his mother.
And St Ambrose
She is my patron-her shrine is in his church in Rome
Why THANK YOU, for adding in the most important first influence of his gradual, spiritual redemption: his mother! My namesake and my hero, she for never giving up on his wastrel ways and infamous debauchery! She was one happy mom when he came into his own teaching and writing. Perfectly apropos that he should define the concept of "original sin" since he pretty much wrote the book on it, in his former years.
God works in mysterious ways, but only by His grace and our willingness can He work miracles in us.
Excellent! Greetings from Brazil! God bless
Thank you for sharing father, God bless you. From Sri Lanka 🙏🏻
Remember this my fellow Catholics and orthodox Christian siblings, even the worst of the worst IF that person repents truly and does their best to change he or she can be saved by the grace of our Lord. God bless you all.
St Augustine of Hippo 300AD Has a saintly mother who didn’t gave up to him incessantly and fervently praying and believing in his son that someday he will see the light and embrace the Catholic faith! Before he became Bishop of Hippo St Augustine is a wordly man tried everything the pleasure on this earth can offer and after his long sojourn of seeking peace and happiness he summarizes everything in this words Our hearts is restless until it rest to thee my God! K
Such a pride to me as a Tunisian to have saint Augustine as our historical figure ❤
Aunque su ciudad natal está en Argelia, realmente no era ni argelino ni tunecino, simplemente bereber.

I would love a video like this on Saint Patrick and his legacy and writings.
Thank you so much for this video. It really spoke to me. I am now rereading some of his writings from an old college text from about ten years ago from a ethics of philosophy course I had took. Our depravation of good has lead us to the light. In which these deprivations in itself are good. God allows the evil with the good to recognize his path.
God Bless father and thank you.
The Church is filled with Saints and sinners, and God can work through anyone. I've gotten jobs done with broken tools, so can God.
Beautiful!
Very informative.... please bring forward more saints
Absolutely love your videos - very informative! Have you considered making a series on 'Saints you should know'?
I am very grateful for this, and your kind thoughts at the very end are uplifting, kind, and meaningful. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for this. Augustine seemed like a fascinating man. He reminds us of how God loves his lost sheep more than we could know. Considering becoming a Catholic myself, still not sure where the spirit is leading me...anyways thanks for your channel!
Thank you Fr. For making this beautiful imformation about Saint Augustin . My Parents place name San Augustin in Philippines. And my Husband take Saint Augustin as his patron when he was joined to Catholic Church 2019 Autumn time. Saint Augustin is our whole family patron.

I am so glad you did this . Never too late to convert. Not every saint led a pious life , it was just a stepping stone to the religious life.
Thank you F Casey for this video. I'm Tunisian and I'm proud to see the contribution of one of my countrymen to philosophy (okay okay I know that Hippo is in Algeria nowadays).
Even though I'm not a Christian, I wish Tunisians studied their Catholic history and got to know people like St. Augustine and St. Cyprian better.
@Lechat Sorcier No he is not, Algeria did not exist back then. He doesn't belong there neither since converting to Catholicism/Orthodoxy is forbidden.
