  • St. Augustine did not live the sort of life that you would expect from a saint and doctor of the Church. And yet, his life witnesses to the incredible power of God to convert our hearts and transform sinners into incredible disciples.

    Augustine is a n example of one who experienced God's mercy and a radical conversion to christ. He and Paul the apostle are examples that conversion is possible.

    My kind of Saint. My favourite would be St.Thérèse of Lisieux, not so much for her holiness but for her humanity. She had doubts and many struggles and she felt she had nothing special to offer. Like many of us, she dreamed of doing great deeds but the reality of her daily life was quite mundane. She wasn't even great at praying; often falling asleep. She came to the Lord with empty hands but she learned from Him that there was one thing she could do; she could be a person of love. I have very many doubts but I always find encouragement and inspiration from St.Thérèse.

    • @anastylos2812
      @anastylos2812 3 роки тому +16

      Thank you for recommending St. Therese of Lisieux. I often think that anyone who has no doubts has not really understood Christianity. God becoming human and sacrificing himself? That's quite much to accept. But that's why I think it has to be true. If men had invented it they would have invented something more logical and easy to accept.
      Or how St. Augustine said it: If you understand it it's not God.

      Old habits must be replaced with new ones, if you can go a month with Jesus being your sole focus every time you get tempted, you can go the rest of your life with this sin defeated. Make a new habit, set a new record, avoid things that tempt you like the plague, protect your self like you would protect a child, set a new desire, a desire to be closer to God and have your heart set free. Life is all about overcoming struggles and persevere! For Jesus loves you and picks you up every time you fall. Keep running in faith. We are made new in Christ.

She followed Augustine through his debauchery (who is this illegitimate child?) until he overcame his wastrel ways & Monica must have been mightily relieved at his eventual! transformation. St. Augustine probably came up with term "Original Sin," but the concept has been since the beginning of Christianity.
    "Every soul that is born into flesh is soiled by the filth of wickedness and sin. . . . In the Church, baptism is given for the remission of sins, and, according to the usage of the Church, baptism is given even to infants. If there was nothing in infants that required the remission of sins and nothing in them pertinent to forgiveness, the grace of baptism would seem superfluous" [St. Hippolytus' Homilies on Leviticus 8:3 (c. A.D. 249)

    Brilliant. Love learning more about Catholics/Christians like this in history who we can all look to when we feel too imperfect for God. The church is made up of imperfect people (edit: who try earnestly to be better daily/christlike to be specific) always has been. That’s what makes it great.

    Thanks for this. Augustine seemed like a fascinating man. He reminds us of how God loves his lost sheep more than we could know. Considering becoming a Catholic myself, still not sure where the spirit is leading me...anyways thanks for your channel!

    _Augustine of Hippo*, also known as Saint Augustine, was a theologian and philosopher of Berber origin and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. His writings influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity, and he is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church in the Patristic Period. His many important works include The City of God, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions. According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith". In his youth he was drawn to the eclectic Manichaean faith, and later to the Hellenistic philosophy of Neoplatonism. After his conversion to Christianity and baptism in 386, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and perspectives."

    Thank you so much for this video. It really spoke to me. I am now rereading some of his writings from an old college text from about ten years ago from a ethics of philosophy course I had took. Our depravation of good has lead us to the light. In which these deprivations in itself are good. God allows the evil with the good to recognize his path.

    When you mention that the legitimacy of the sacraments isnt based on our holiness but based on God's (although we strive for holiness) you sound reformed (not a bad thing). This is contrary to many other Catholics I've heard talk about the implications/weight of our holiness vs God's. In my experience I've understood many Catholics to place more weight on our need to be holy vs God's ability to be faithful. I know my wayward heart to know that God will ALWAYS be more faithful to me then I am to Him.
