Incredible drum line. But what is the visual action backfield? How does the visual action integrate with the drum line? The horn section puts down their instruments, and kneels around the feather stage prop, face-front, with arms crossed in front of them, as if they're sentinels, maybe guarding the feather prop. This could be symbolic of say, defending the organization against attack from some unknown outside force. It's unclear. Perhaps it's a general pose indicating strength and security. Then after a few counts, and with no catalyst, they disband the pose and return to their instruments, and run to the next formation. The color guard then stands on top of the base of the feather prop and poses. In front of them, completely separate, the color guard does a "trust lift", lifting one performer and rotating him in a pose, and then setting him down and disbanding. This "push and pose, rinse repeat" format was the killer for Cavaliers' visual score. The drum line's arrangements offered no opportunity to "make sense" of the percussion feature. The percussion music was separate and unintegrated, and offered no support for a meaningful progression of visual action, either in this movement or in the show, overall.

I'm on the same boat as you, not necessarily a fan of the choreography myself. But at the same time it's fair to say that batteries have evolved over time in terms of movement. Hell during the 70s and 80s when Brigadiers were around and when Spirit of Atlanta was consistently making top 12, etc, lines were just lining up in block during drum breaks. So change was inevitable
