    Hi Garden friends, Happy October!🍁🧡🍂 Can you count how many times I said "stunning" in this video? That's how excited I am about these plants I grew this season. These four annual flowers that were total standouts in my garden. They were super easy to grow from seed, and just one seed packet produced tons of plants, making them really affordable. Having these flowers in large drifts made a huge impact in the garden. My top picks are Zahara Double Raspberry Ripple Zinnias, Blue Horizon Ageratum, Atomic Purple Gomphrena, and Sahara Rudbeckia-they're must-haves for me every year. Do you have a favorite flower you love growing in your garden? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b) #flowers #garden #gardening #plants

    I planted the gomphrena on my walkway too. I just pulled them out for some fall planting and wow, what a job. I felt like I was pulling out shrubs. It's amazing that from one small seed, you get these huge plants! Love everything you do! Going out to make a bouquet because you inspired me to do it! :)

      Hi Filomena, The first year I pulled out half of them then realized it was much easier to just cut them at ground level. They will decompose, and its much easier and better than leaving a hole in the soil. Thank you so much for your kind words, enjoy your bouquet. I will sure miss our beautiful flowers over the next several months 💚

    I grew gomphrena from seed this year because of your video about them. They did so well and I dried them all and made them into dried flower arrangements as decor. Side note, my cat LOVED eating them (dried!) so I can't keep them on the dining room table. Had to put them up high where she can't reach. 😂 I've collected marigold, echinachea and the gomphrena seeds for winter sowing.

    Lovely and thank you for the names of the websites that you purchased the seeds. This was my first year planting seeds I just put on ground put little dirt and watered daily. I lurched from the BRECKS, Baker Seed( something like that) and Logees I tell you everything is still blooming! The giant Zumba oh my! The hellatrop things red yellow orange oh my! I’m just so over the moon! I’m so excited I’m still searching to add to my seed stores. I’ve got tons of packages ready for winter sow because of course now I think I’m a real gardener!! Thank you to you and your husband when you are vacationing keeping my eye on the price!

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Місяць тому

      I started the zinnias indoor under growlights about 6 weeks before I planted them out. There weren't many seeds in the package, so I wanted to have more control over the germination, which is why I opted to grow under the grow lights.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Місяць тому +1

      Hi there, I have started gomphrena several ways. Direct sowing, winter sowing, and under grow lights. If you direct sow, it has to be once it warms up (after any chance of frost has passed in spring), and the seeds should be soaked for 24 hrs prior to sowing. Same with indoor starting under grow lights (soak seeds 24 hrs before sowing) this helps with germination by breaking down the chafe/outter shell. If you use the winter sowing method, you di not have to pre soak seeds as there will be moisture in your containers that will help with the germination.

    Great plant recommendations! I especially like the color and height of the zinnias, the placement of the gomphrena - it looks to be hiding iris and peony foliage-, and the Sahara colors are giving me something to think about. I'm working on my front yard flowers. I must design around my very large collection of peonies. I have many irises too. Basically, I have flowers for a spring garden, but am still making flower beds and deciding flowers to accent these for summer and fall. The house even came with a crazy amount of forsythia that I'm keeping as a privacy hedge, and a saucer magnolia. I have full sun and don't want to water. I also don't want anything crowding the peonies and irises.

    What great choices, Steph! I’m unbelievably disappointed with my gomphrena. This was the first year I tried to grow them, and although I did soak them for a day before I direct seated them, not a single one came up. 🙁 i’m hoping to next year start them inside, hoping that will make a difference. I absolutely adore the color of your zinnias! All these flowers are gorgeous and I love the arrangements that you are able to make.

    Great video with really helpful information about the plants. I've only been flower gardening for a year and I'm hooked! Zinnias were my favorites this year - I had a colorful mix that got 4 feet tall with multiple shades of pink, yellow, orange, and white, and I had Lilliput Salmon (from Eden Bros.) that stayed more compact but still had long enough stems for cut flowers. I loved how the salmon helped "bring together" the different colors for me in an arrangement. I hope to plant all four of your favorites you listed here - Sahara Rudbecki and Atomic Purple Gomphrena were already on my list to grow. Did you start your seeds inside, winter sow them in containers outside, or plant them right in the ground? Thank you!!

    Hi Steph! I grew Zahara Double Raspberry Zinnias this year because of your recommendation last year! They have been stunning all summer!! Such a good recommendation! • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Mal! I'm so glad your enjoying the zinnias. I didn't try collecting the seeds because I had them growing with other flowers and its possible that they wouldn't be true to the variety due to cross pollination. They were all on their own this year, so I will collect a few to try next season, but will also buy another pack of seeds "just in case" until I can confirm my test by growing from my seeds 😉

    For the dwarf variety zinnias, do you have to pinch them when they’re first getting started like you do with full size zinnias?

    Steph, on your zinnias, is each clump in front of your wall one plant or are there multiples? How far apart did you plant them? They look like a nice, bushing variety. I want to grow them next year! 😍

      I planted these this summer. I started them from seed and that is about 3 plants planted together.

      Steph do you plant these inside first or do you sow directly in garden?

    How tall do the gomphrena grow? I have a 2 ft wide by 6 ft long raised bed up against a fence. So I have to put taller plants in the back and shorter in the front. I was thinking of growing taller zinnias (30-40 inches) in the back along with the Ageratum since they seem to get tall. Will gomphrena in the front of them work? Or do they get similar height. My worry is the plants in the front blocking light from plants in the back, especially since the sun doesn’t come fully overhead on these raised beds in my garden.

      Hello, the atomic purple gomphrena variety i show here is about 12-18" in height. They are a good front of the border option.

    Can you save the seeds of the Zahara Zinnia and get the same the next year.

      Hi Maureen, You can collect seeds but its not a guarantee it will look exactly like the plant you collected the seeds from. Because they are planted out in the open its possible that they could get cross pollinated with other zinnias in my garden, and then I wont end up with the true variety of these short stature zinnias. So for these, I wouldn't want to risk it by growing a seed that would end up with a taller zinnia etc. However, my gomphrena for example, I was able to grow some from seeds I collected and they turned out the same.

    I grew gomphrena and Hybrida Profusion Double Hot Cherry zinnia for their first time this year and I love them.
