1981 Gibson SG Sacrilege well, almost the worst fretboard and frets to an almost great player Part 1

  • It could be worth £1,900, but it was in very dirty condition. This is one of the GIbson classics... Some of the features of these early 80s SG’s are really cool. Slim 60s style neck, side mounted jack, block inlays, Gibson branded Schaller Tuners.

    That neck desperately needs a re-fret, thats probably why the fretboard is so worn because you need to apply so much pressure to try and get a clean note.

    Nice job on cleaning it up! I don't mind dings, scratches, missing finish, tarnished metal, etc. to some extent. These are instruments, meant to be played, not kept pristine and in mint condition after all. But I absolutely can't stand playing a dirty instrument! It only takes a couple of minutes to clean a guitar after a gig to prevent the sweat/dirt/dna/etc build up. I can't imagine the owner of this guitar enjoyed the way this thing felt with all that grime on it..I hope he will keep it clean now that you have given it all this TLC!

      I one thing for me, as it sits on a Luthier's bench, is that if the neck were so weak or had a fault and did snap with cutting the strings in tension then that is something I would like to find out and fix before it snapped on stage.... but yes, if your are not a Luthier and don't have the tools to fix a broken neck... then don't cut the strings under tension... just in case.

    This is the first time I see an SG with a 3-way switch in this location. I honestly thought at first that it's one of those half-assed DIY mods. But no, looks like it left the factory this way. I'm baffled. As someone who uses the switch quite intensively during playing, it seems like a totally arbitrary and counter-ergonimic placement which must get in the way. What are your thoughts?

    Wow! That guitar looked like its been living at the bottom of a pond ...... I hope the owner fully appreciates the work you put in, and coughed up a fair amount of beer tokens for the cats. I have a 1971 Epiphone thats defo players grade, but at least its clean; that SG must have felt awful to play in its manky state. Good job!

    Ok. There has to be somthing up with how the divots in the fretboard appear. I have two early eightys v's. Turred and played hard. Three fret levelings. So low, cant be crowned again. Ive seen so many guitars that are plyed hard for decades, not have surch deep divits. Would high moisture in the wood while playing ten hrs. a day for years be the cause?

    • @LennonLuthierFinagler
      @LennonLuthierFinagler  19 днів тому

      I think in this instance the fret board and never been taken care of, the dirt would build up on a damp fretboard and the wood would wear away more quickly as the dirt would act like sand paper...

Before I see others caught that one too. My 84 and 85 v's, I've leveled multiple times over the years are looking so cool with actual wear and tear. READ THIS FOR CORRECT INFORMATION!! Pretty sure the three digit date number is the day of the year. 155 is not may 15. It's the 155 th day of the year. Would put the manufacturer date as may 4th. Check into my info, have I been taught wrong for fifty years of checking Gibson serial no? No. There is never a four digit date no. America puts the month first like it's written. May 15. 5 15 would be the three digit code with your method,in the states, for May 15. The second three numbers in this particular way of serial coding for Gibson is the day of the year and they never go over 365. There are other ways they number guitars but this one is the most common for USA mass production numbers.

    If you called it a 2024 guitar it would be worth many thousands in that condition. I'm one the weirdos that likes the cheap durable finishes, putting regular life and play age on new guitars in good condition. And having one for a tenth to a hundredth of the price of a strategically aged or antique one.

    • @AJNpa80
      @AJNpa80 27 днів тому +1

      The relic-ing to me is the same as designer jeans with strategic holes cut and frayed. Just keep your 501s long enough to develop holes or turn to cutoffs. If I'm paying money I want hightech light weight flexible but twice as durable, water, stain, sun resistant, warm, but cooling swat wicking, that's worth the extra dollars. Alternatively I'd pay extra for hand made new jeans with triples sewn riveted seams, maybe true waxed live forever work jeans. But pre aged, bah. Guitars are the same. The placebo effect is a hell of a drug. it's a similar thing selling fake old guitars. Takes that money like a habit, be it guitar, religion.
