Susumu Hirosawa and Satoshi Kon truly combine to form the trippiest fucking atmosphere known to man. There will never be another artist combination like these. I'm glad I was born when I was.
There's one combo that I think can rival it. Susumu Hirosawa and Kentario Miura. He did the ost for Berserk. I wonder how Hirosawa feels about defining the sound of not only the greatest anime director's work, but the greatest mangaka's as well. Rest in piece to both masters in their field. Lets hope we don't loose Susumu soon.
Not just Satoshi Kons animation but the directing is really amazing no wonder American directors have pulled stuff directly from these films and integrated them into their own films.
I can never get tired of this song. One of my favorites of all time! It incorporates the traditional Japanese way of singing with modern music to accompany it. Amazing!
At first glance I thought this movie was just boring, but when I really watched it, my jaw dropped. To create something so incredible, especially because of the perfect soundtrack, is mind boggling. Honestly one of the most magical things I have ever experienced, just the atmosphere and trippy, originality. LOVE THIS MOVIE!
I'm still very sad he passed away . I spent 2000 alone watching Perfect Blue and it really made my night and made me a fan of his works! I loved(d) Paprika and have recommended it too all my friends! Satoshi Kon, rest in peace! We will never forget you!
Susumu's original music videos are never terribly good, sadly. His music and this song especially is something else altogether. His skills are godlike and I could listen to this song forever.
it must take honest dedication and pure undiluted focus to produce something of such high unimitable caliber as this masterpiece of an opening. I am left mesmerized by the mere arrangement of vocals in a manner that is upbeat yet sophisticated, not to mention the animation which is truly captivating and in total harmony with the music.
@PeppermintCereal Right after I posted that I was poking around and saw people mentioning MEIKO. My friend who made a VSQ for this said that LOLA could be made to sound like that with a different vocal configuration, and I can definitely say that with the proper editing she doesn't always sound manly. I checked Vocaloid Wiki and that says LOLA, but it seems that it's debated a lot so I don't know for sure ^^;
Such a great anime and song. This anime really keeps on sticking in your head if you watched it 1 time, you have to see it again, and again.... What a masterpiece.
Anime is like everything in this world, you have one brilliant piece of art among 100 pieces of crap. It happens with anime, with rock, with manga, with comics, with everything.
That is what the Great Master Susumu Hiragawa is known for: Making Music like it is not part of THIS world. Dream sequences or fantasies crossing the mind....
just bought millennium actress and paprika on blue ray.. much love and respect to Satoshi Kon. He will be an inspiration for many years to come. I love this song, brings tears to the eyes.
Honestly, I was annoyed with japanese animes, music and all, but after watching this movie and listening to this music, I realized that the japanese are genuinely, absolutely, BRILLIANT.
You know, it's crazy. I didn't really react all that much to the news that Satoshi Kon had died. I mean, it WAS really sad, but I couldn't really get worked up over the death of a person that I'd never met. Then just now I listened to this song while reading over his (heartbreaking) last message, and it hit me that we'll never see anything like this again. Ever. And I couldn't stop crying for a good half hour after. His death has got to be one of the great tragedies in anime history.
This anime is so underrated. The technological progress and its’ bizarre consequences are at the core of the plot. Ghost in the Shell, Paprika, Stein’s Gate. ❤
I have this film in my collection, along with Millennium Actress. I want to add Tokyo Godfathers, and then go on that ultimate of quests, finding an American copy of Perfect Blue, which I have never seen at all. The late Satoshi Kon followed closely in the footsteps of such filmmakers as Hayao Miyazaki, Katsuhiro Otomo, and, I'd dare say, Akira Kurosawa.
The death of Satoshi Kon is not only a blow to the world of anime, but to the worlds of cinema and art overall. I will honor him by re-watching Paprika amd Millenium Actress again today.

横断歩道を跳ねて渡るシーン、夢の中で走ると確かにあんな感じの走り方、スピードになるのは私だけですかね…?
