  • "The spending is going up because Europeans understand there is a real threat...that's Mr Putin, the one thing you can thank him for."
Russia's defeats in the war in Ukraine will guarantee security for Europe and the West if they can end Putin's invasion, Ivo Daalder, Former United States Permanent Representative to NATO, tells Kate Gerbeau on Frontline.

Excerpt from the blog of Li Jianwei, a Chinese mercenary in the Russian army on May 25, 2024
The casualty rate is tremendous. Once deployed to the front lines, almost everyone dies within 10 hours. Everyone in my squad was wiped out except me. Russian reinforcements soon arrived, but they too were soon wiped out. None of us had any combat experience.
The battlefield was not at all what I had imagined. The Ukrainians used armor-piercing rounds to destroy every target where they thought the Russians were hiding, not to mention the walls where we were hiding. The enemy was utterly relentless and had a determined offensive spirit. Anyway, there were too many Ukrainian drones. After a few reconnaissance planes arrived, the ruthless attacks began. All we could do was to lie down and pray for a quick end. We Russians launched three attacks, all of which failed with heavy losses. Even when tanks came to support us, they were immediately detected by the drones and instantly destroyed. Polish mortars are particularly troublesome. They hardly make a sound until they hit the ground. There are Cubans, Indians, Nepalese, Syrians, and blacks here, but they all flee immediately. No one helps each other. I was blown up by a bomb, but my protective gear saved me. Now I am recuperating. I tell you people, the Russian army cannot win this war."

Does he also mention the 5:1 to 10:1 artillery/ammunition ratio advantage the Russians havein this conflict, meaning Ukrainian casualties will likewise reflect this disparity which also means Ukraine have suffered anywhere between 1.7 million to 3.5 million casualties?
Do _you_ also realise, in that video, toward the last part, Li Jianwei said *“这仗没法打”,* which does not equal to “unwinnable.”
It is more like an exclamation that it is too harsh and difficult.

Genscher (Germany foreign minister) with behind him standing Walker (US foreign minister) stated during the German re-unification negotiation into public TV: "There is not intent to move NATO eastward".
Who do you think were the larger liars?
How can you assume "Putin said that his troops were training on the borders in 2022" is the truth, when the US was faced with Putin's request for negotiation especially the point Ukraine not to become a NATO member?
And you remember the US reaction on Putin's request? (I remember US said there is NOTHING to negotiate)
And you remember the news information, the US informed its allies a few days before the invasion that Russia will invade? Do you also remember what kind of diplomatic action the US took after it got confirmation that Russia will invade to avoid this war (I remember they did NOTHING)?
The world is not easy to understand, but when you have the ability to ask yourself the correct questions (and not only listen to news to get the truth/correct understanding) you may come to some different understanding than just repeating in above sentence what western media does suggest you to think.

      NATO didn't move one millimeter.
Countries in Eastern Europe asked to join NATO to have some allies in the event they were invaded by Imperialist Russia, a very wise decision given the number of times over the past few decades that Russia has launched unprovoked imperialist invasions against nearby countries to steal territory from them.
If Russia doesn't want countries to join NATO then it should stop launching unprovoked imperialist invasions into nearby countries and become a modern peaceful democratic country that wants to live in peace with its neighbours the same way that other European countries do.
I'm other words it's time that Russia moved out of the 17th century of European imperialism and moved into the 21st century inhabited by other countries.
And obviously when Russia demands that countries such as Ukraine not join NATO it's because Russia doesn't want them to have any allies or support if Russia decides to invade them.
It would be foolish for a country in Eastern Europe to agree to Russia's demand that it stays unsupported and vulnerable to a Russian invasion.
Russia asking countries to not join NATO is like a burglar demanding that a home owner leave their doors and windows unlocked at all times so that it will be easier to rob their house.
And as well Russia's invasion has nothing to do with NATO.
Ukraine was not in NATO nor was it anywhere close to joining NATO.
Every time Russia lsunched an unprovoked imperialist invasion it was against a country that was not in NATO and was nowhere near joining NATO.
It's just plain old Russian imperialism as has existed at least since the 1400s.

Trump is indeed a very strange person (for me too extreme, therefore I need to think case by case).
But could you please clarify with Trump, was it the US who wanted to set up military bases in Europe, or was the US asked by European countries to set up their military bases?
I hope you do recognize that these 2 cases are completely different and in the first case I would like to ask you, why you suddenly dare to ask money even so you set up this military for your own advantage.
In the second case I am asking you, why did you not ask the country some money compensation when you set up your military? (first to set up without asking money and then suddenly changing mind and ask money is not the behaviour of an ally/friend).
And I personally see no problem when the US withdraws all its military, because then we have exactly the case that Europe will take care of its own security. You should just define, if you also want to withdraw the atomic deterrence which I understand is basically a zero cost (US needs this deterrence anyhow). And you should also clean up the aftermath of WWII, because as I understand it is today by your power forbidden that Germany does develop and produce its own nuclear deterrrence. .....
You may decide to withdraw your military as done in Afghanistan, but I hope you understand that in such case there is a good chance that Russia/China will take the opportunity to improve their position in your fight against them ...... (I wish you good luck in deeper thinking)

Unfortunately, the more assured the Europeans are that the US will come to their rescue, the less they feel compelled to spend more on their defense. For 75 years straight, they've enjoyed a free ride that's only gotten freer over time as the Europeans spent less and less on defense -- despite the US complaining about it for decades and despite the Europeans offering one pacifying assurance after another that they'll live up to their obligations they just need a little more time. Again and again they just need a little more time and on it goes -- an ever promised spending increase always just a little bit ahead on an ever receding horizon. I've heard certain American commentators pooh-pooh the free riding as a minor problem that friends can solve. However, those commentators under-estimate how robust the free riding dynamics are in the NATO context. Consider Germany, which is the poster child for why Trump very nearly pulled the US out of NATO. If the US pulls out of NATO, it will do so largely because of -- or at least in large part because of -- Germany's spending of much less than 2% of GDP on defense. Yet, the moment that the US pulls out, the threat to Europe posed by Russia and Belarus magnifies exponentially, likely forcing Germany to immediately increase its defense spending far above 2% of GDP. Note how obvious it seems at first glance that, to prevent the US from leaving NATO, Germany should increase defense spending to 2% now. Yet Germany hasn't, and most commentators seem to believe that, despite Scholz's big talk early in the Ukraine war about an increase in defense spending, Germany probably won't increase defense spending by much if at all. Why? Because the free riding dynamics in NATO are robust and for so long Germany has gotten its cake and eaten it too. Germans seem to believe that, at the end of the day, the Americans -- whether because they're dyed-in-the-wool suckers or because they just love playing cowboy hero -- will come to the rescue. The Germans do recognize that it's a gamble, but that gamble has paid off continuously for over a half century and what German politician wants to be the one who calls an end to the party. Accordingly, it is rational for the US to reconsider whether it is good thing when the Europeans know they can "rely" on the US to comply with its Article 5 obligation irrespective of whether they've lived up to their spending obligations.

But, Putin hasn’t been honest about the invasion of Ukraine. He needs to give it up, too many Ukrainians AND Russians have died. As a US citizen, i support Ukraine in their sovereignty. But I don’t see the PEOPLE of Russia as an enemy either. This Cold War mentality held by a handful of old politicians needs to come to an end. Russians need to break free of these old Soviet era politicians. Here in my country, we need to fix government corruption that has reached catastrophic levels. We ALL need to get the war mongers out of power.
Or, we can leave things as they are. And we should spend more time with those we love, and enjoy our last sunsets. Because once the bombs are launched, the planet will be destroyed and billions of innocents will die. And I’m betting the people that started this will be safe in their bunkers, not wanting to face the consequences of what they did. But will be ready to start all over again with the “rule the world” mentality with whoever is left.

Having been a soldier myself in the British Army I believe Trump said what needed to be said and that was about the "lack off" and reversing of funding that (certain) NATO alliances were doing (and that actually included Germany!)
Please do not forget..that with not only the British Army (with more cuts, amalgamations and basically stripping it to its bare bones) The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force has also had SIGNIFICANT cuts too.
Saying that "..its not about the money" is rather amateurish and misses the point completely insomuch that wars and conflicts are not won on just willpower and witchcraft..is IS about the money being submitted (by ALL that belong to this "club" called NATO Hence Trumps statement as to WHY should the USA foot most of the lions share when other nations are NOT contributing (what they have signed up in the first place to commit to)
Also Trump did also state (if one sees the unedited version.."that why should the USA provide protection (from Russia..my a brackets) then go and basically go cap in hand to said enemy nd go lock stock and all eggs in one basket get oil and gas from them (Russia)
    A no trainer..
It has to be noted though that since the Trump statement (which caused the ruffling of reathers mentioned in this interview) many if not all of the accused low investment countries are NOW paying their FAIR SHARE....

Donald Trump may be crass, but he had a point. European countries may be worried that the US might "abandon" them--but from the point of view of the average American (as opposed to globalist elites), Europeans have no right to continue to expect the US to be fully committed to their defense--while they feel free to be arrears in their NATO dues because, well, all of their social safety nets take priority over military spending. Add to this the fact that such countries endlessly lecture America for not spending as much on egalitarian and environmental causes, as well as on being overly militaristic, etc., and any impartial observer can see why Trump's words struck a raw nerve and have found a lot of support here. It's wrong to try to re-litigate history, of course, but it does seem to many that it's past time Europe shoulder more of the burden for matters in their own backyard--especially at a time when America's other set of allies, in the Far East, find themselves hard-pressed by the world's other autocratic hegemon. And it doesn't look like many European countries--Germany in particular--have any interest in pushing back in China. If something erupts in the South China Sea, we're going to be on our own, I suspect. So before you condemn Trump and his views out of hand, please consider the larger global picture. There's a lot more at stake right now than just European security and prestige.

I voted for Trump twice and will probably vote for him again, but I agree completely with Daalder that alliances are based upon trust, and that Trump's NATO comments are extremely damaging. I was encouraged to hear Trump say in April that Ukraine's survival is important to the US, as it indicates to me that he is now seeing the importance to ultimately stopping Russia's ambitions in central Asia and Eastern Europe. There are better ways to get allies to pay 2% than to hold security promises over their heads, and most damagingly to do so publicly.

I'm a United States citizen as generations of my people before me. But, I don't believe that the United States is a force for good anymore.
My country has gone into nations in South America and on the continent of Africa and in the Middle East and started civil wars that cost the lives of many, including whole families, just so that we could put the person or group in power that we considered to be most beneficial to us, and very often the motive was nothing more than greed for money and/or greed for power.
Every one of those continents has countless numbers of people who hate America and are just waiting to strike back at us for what we've done. We're not so big and bad that we can fight them all off. If one doesn't get us the others will find a way to. We have it coming.
As far as Putin is concerned I don't believe he will be defeated. Nor should he be. He has acted justly to protect his country and we, in the West and America in particular, have been the aggressors.

    a pleasure to listen!!!
So much compelling issues about an alliance.
Another overwhelming one got mentioned during D-day commemoration:
The allied forces where guided by a common goal down to every single fighter being convinced of it and having an orientation by it.
The German forces though have been stuck in autocratic hollowness and needed at every turn adjustment of their mindset such that they just couldn't meet the force of the common spirit of freedom.
Right now, with the bespoke threats and challenges, it would be fascinating to get Daalder's thoughts on whether there could be a global NATO, then of course without the "N" and the "A".
    China would scream.
But if the 75 years of NATO showed anything, then that NATO is no threat to anyone.
And no one should be allowed to threaten like minded people to plea each other assistance for their security and territorial integrity and organize that in an alliance.
Such a global alliance including Japan, South Korea, Australia, Philippines and of course Ukraine would exactly be the predictable and reliable pillar of security and stability the world needs.
And of course the nursery of freedom and democracy.
It had many just suitable side effects,
e.g. a new accession process that would demand Hungary and Turkiye to think another time (and certainly come to the same result...),
e.g. more backup for US for its commitments in Asia,
e.g. being still a strong alliance without US,
e.g. by leveling the influence of US and thereby weakening that talking point of the US-led hegemony,
but above all, right because of the later, being such a powerful body, that US would be much more willing to stay.

Ridiculous out of context statements on Ukraine being vital to the Western empires security! Goodness sakes Ukraine was Russia's neighbour since its inception and funnily enough still is.
Not only that but Ukraine was a co-dependent of the Russian state as both being a big part of the Soviet Union. Quite conversely Ukraine is a vital part of Russia's security architecture and was designed as such over acquisition of lands won in peace settlements over 150 years defeating invaders seeking to plunder Russia's resources.

The only way they will ever feel “comfortable” is when Russia is defeated and thrown off their land (see Zelensky peace plan). This guy is a perfect example of passive, dithering appease-speak that got us here 10 years ago. All those world leaders that visit Kiev would not be able to because the city would be rubble with 100, 000 of dead civilians under rubble, 90 % of hospitals destroyed and all transportation destroyed, government buildings, schools etc. Zelensky and his gang of thieves would escape to their mansions in the EU or the US. This is the exact time to grant NATO membership to Ukraine. Couple that with an immediate call for a cease fire. This presents Putin with both a fait accompli and the off ramp to end the war. This also guarantees a free and independent Ukraine going forward without the country facing a demographic catastrophe. All other issues (occupied Ukrainian territory, sanctions, reparations, etc.) can be negotiated or not (read: Korean War Armistice 1953).
