I've ridden a few, usually hanging off the side! The cable moves at a constant 9.5 mph, so when you've "got a grip", that's how fast you're going. I believe the cars coast around curves, since the gripman has to release his grip on one cable and then pick up another cable after turning the corner.
Any idea how often these used to actually run back in the day when they were the main form of transport in the city? It looks like quite a slow operation turning them around and wouldn't allow frequencies higher than maybe about 2-3 minutes?
