I was thinking how funny it is until I realized these are three independent accounts by three different explorers. This has me more than intrigued now.
I only skimmed through, but in one recording it goes out of its way to talk about their king king etc... the last says there is no king. They seem to have more differences than similarities...

My friends, these beings are explained in the Bible. Fallen Angels who rebelled from God had intercourse with mankind and produced hybrid offspring. There was also DNA manipulation either from the intercourse and or from possession. Look at the ancient Egypt carvings and depictions of animal headed human-like hybrids that ruled over ancient Egypt.

It can be entirely possible that there is a reasonable explanation for all these tales.
Explorers of the time describe things that sound incredibly impossible but they turn out to exist.
Another famous example is found on Antonio Pigafetta's account during Maggelan's travel. He described leaves that after falling from their trees, they would start walking around. It sounds impossible but there is a certain insect called Phylliidae, whose camouflage is exactly like a leaf.

I think so too, I think it's just Papua in general tho, and around 3:06 Ibn Battuta mentioned that it is about 15 days (most certainly by sea) from the island of Java. So it's most likely Papua? 🤔
edit: after thinking about it again, it's probably not Papua since Battuta only traveled to the north part of Sumatra and went neither to Java nor Papua. He went to Sumatra by the Indian ocean so this island is most likely located in the Indian ocean, probably near Srilanka.
@@-TasyaNabila Eh, it's probably some tribe in Northern Sumatra considering that the practice was once widespread throughout the Malay peninsula and even today, some like the Mentawai still sharpen their teeth as they consider it attractive. That would also explain the presence of elephants in some of these accounts.

This is interesting! Reminded me that there exists the word "koirankuonolainen" in finnish vogabularity aswell. The word is in such form that it cannot be adapted from any other language and it must have ment to the finns what it describes: "A dog-nosed man". After small research I found out that there are "dog-nosed men" in our finnish legends aswell, and they have been told to reside in the region of Kainuu - which might have gained it's name by them (read Canine).
I can't argue with anyone that can say that word. I mean literally, I would be unable to say what I was debating. Win for the Finn 👍🏼 😂

I.e. that "koira" means "dog" ("koiran" = "of a dog") "kuono" is "snout", "-lainen" is a suffix denoting to people (i.e. suomi = Finland, suomalainen = finnish person/finn) and if you put it all together you get "koirankuonolainen" i.e. "person with the snout of a dog".
The estonians have the same creatures, our word for them being "koerakoonlane". The latvian word for them is "sumpurni". I'm actually quite curious about if and how closely they're related to the general medieval belief in dogheaded people, because from what I can tell the "koerakoonlane" seemed to have started cropping up at a later date than those medieval accounts.
From what little research I've done I get the sense that the word "koerakoonlane" in estonian came about from a folk name for the "oprichniks" (Ivan the Terrible's police/military force who had a dog head motif going on in their emblems) and that the stories of dogheaded raiders are even more recent (coming about possibly after The Great Northern War in the 18th century?). It's just...so super fascinating to see such an obscure element of my country's folklore having such strong parallels - or possibly predecessors - in the form of all these medieval stories. I think I need to catch a folklorist or track down some of the books which the estonian wikipedia article sources.

I guess I'm multilingual? I'm estonian, but I speak english and some finnish. My best advice for picking up new language is to immerse yourself in the culture. I.e. go live in your desired country for some months or years. If that's not practical - try watching the movies from those languages with subtitles and see how long you can manage before DuoLingo pisses you off.

My theory is that this tribe practised head flattening and possibly also sharpened their teeth. I could see myself describing someone like this as being somewhat doglike, especially if they were cannibals. This would explain why only males appeared this way since it is not genetic. Imagine a hairless dog with human ears and eyes. They obviously lived somewhere in indonesia so all of these body mods were present among some cultures. The only other theory I can think of, if we are to believe the authors, is that they wore some kind of mask or animal helmet like the Aztecs.
Why do you believe it's in Indonesia? Wouldn't Andama or nicobar be a better explanation?
Head flattening was practiced in pre-colonial Visayas in the Philippines too. Probably there's a shared tradition with some Indonesian tribes.

Seriously how is this explained lol? First thing that comes to mind is that they're all recounting stories from the same distant origin point and none of them saw these people. All stories agree on a number of things and are surprisingly detailed
These animals are in the Lexington Kentucky, Winchester area as well. I witnessed one for myself on the way to work one morning. I was east bound on 64, where the red tiled house sits off to the right close to Avon. I witnessed the dog like creature moving very fast, running from my right and leaping from the middle part of my lane and clearing the middle barrier that separates the interstate. I slowed down before immediately pulling off. As soon as I got to work I informed my school resource officer out of fear for the children. A few hours later two detectives (assuming) showed up and started asking me questions. After we finished talking upon their departure one of them turned to me and stated "you're not lying, maybe the thing that you saw, just wants to be left alone. " the sighting took place around 6, 630 in the morning 2015.
You know what, there's a lot of sighting of 'dogmen' in the jungles especially. You can go to UA-cam channels search for "dogmen" story and your search will be filled with Mystery Channels describing their encounter with these creatures. Now that you yourself have said you saw these creatures, I'm now quite certain these creatures dwell in the deep forests and 18th century ppl called them "lycans".

as someone from the same cultural background as Marko Polo, I can tell you what he meant by a "doghead": even today Croats say "a doghead" for Avar, Hun, or some other Oriental savage. Name Doghead is attached to Atila the Hun who ravaged through Croatia twice: Atilla the Doghead is his name, and all his troops were dogheads too.
Croatia and whole old Illyria has sayings about dogheads. Now think about Egyptian doghead god, also don't forget that "Emperor Trajan has goat ears".
Christian saint Christopher has a dog head, but Marko Polo was obviously describing wild oriental people. Name "doghead" is deeply rooted in Croatian/Illyrian iconography even today, in Marko's time it could be only stronger.
Today we have only translation of Polo's book, which was written in a language foreign to him (Marko Pol(o) from Croatian island Korkyra, Venetian immigrant, was dictating his stories to his co-prisoner who knew only old French).
It is not easy to understand him correctly.

these accounts likely in Sumatra or Borneo. In Indonesia there is a folklore called "Tangkuban Perahu" (Java based) where a demigod couple consist of basically piggy girl & doggy boi. It's quite tragic romance story that very brutal lol.
I think what they encountered were tribes people that use dog masks as some kind of dress code. It's quute interesting that it's pretty similar accounts with bear people (half bear half human) in the historical accounts in some Norse tribes.

I would say this probably all comes from explorers describing people that look different from themselves for whatever reason by comparing their characteristics with those of animals, and the tales just expanded into dog men from there. It’s interesting that the manner and outlook of these prospective people are so different. Sometimes they are portrayed as savages, and other times an exotic but great people.
The accounts were all hundreds of years apart from each other in some cases; assuming all accounts true, it would seem that they started out very primal and tribe-like, developed a hierarchy with a king and code of laws, then established a religion involving an ox which further developed their ethics and laws and evolved their culture further. I've always wondered if they were perhaps describing a now extinct hominid species. Pretruding jaw (exaggerated on the males) and a head/face covered in hair might give off the appearance of canine characteristics. Human beings suffering from hypertrichosis have often been incorrectly and inappropriately labeled as "dog men" or "werewolves" throughout history due to their similarities in appearance with certain canine species. Just a thought.
In that case probably not even a separate hominid, just an isolated population of people who chose for specific characteristics as being more attractive. They eat everybody and keep to themselves supposedly so it would be easy for traits to quickly start appearing in more and more people of the tribe over generations, giving them all this beastly appearance while being quite human. I think the dog mouth thing might be similar to other tribal body modification like the sharpening of teeth, it could be they purposefully cut away cheek tissue to expose their back teeth and make themselves appear more fearsome or wild.

They seemed to communicate using "barks" and grunts which would point towards a primitive proto language. My guess is that the men go through a body modification process at a young age to remove their cheeks. Many people in the "body mod" community today go through a similar procedure, in which the cheeks are pierced, and grommets with large gauges (similar to ones some people have as an ear piercing) are inserted.
Most of these documents are quite vague in their descriptions, except ibn battuta who describes them in quite detail. The paintings however are from artists who only heard, or read but didn't fully understand the stories from the travelers.

In all likelihood these accounts are referring to a place in the Malaysian / Polynesian / Oceanic islands. It could be anything from the Maldives, to Sri Lanka, Sumatra, or even Indonesia / Papua New Guinea. The "island" is described as close to India, and 15 days journey (presumably by ship) from Java. Some in this comment section have already mentioned that the dog heads could refer to a practice of sharpening teeth into fangs, thus allowing them to scare enemies. Cannibalism could also have existed somewhere in the Indian Ocean / Oceania, adding to the savage image that Europeans and Arabic explorers had.
The most prominent take away however is that only Ibn Batutta claims to have seen these men with his own eyes. He specifically said "mouths like dogs", not heads. Thus they could have jagged/sharp teeth, and prominent noses/faces. The other two European explorers likely got their information second hand from merchants and locals in India or China, and this information was likely exaggerated for dramatic effect and poorly understood or mistranslated. Consider the differences in the accounts:
According to Ibn Batutta they have no religion, there is no mention of cannibalism, but they have a King who is wealthy and well dressed. John Mandeville describes their religion in some detail, that they are mostly reasonable and intelligent, and that their King is wealthy and pious, but he also points out their cannibalism very quickly. Marco Polo in contrast says they have no King, are idolatrous (which is just him shit talking their religion), are "no better than beasts" , and cannibalize any foreigners they catch (which means there is no way he would have gotten close enough to know any of this).
You should interpret this as 3 accounts of information from explorers with questionable biases, and debatable believability (looking at you Marco). It is interesting in its own way, but by no means are these accounts proof of actual dog-men.

@Wiz It's not technically Biblical. It's a medieval Jewish midrash, which expands the Biblical text. Many people (of certain Christian persuasions) mistake it for the original Book of Jasher, mentioned several times in the Bible, but that was lost in antiquity (there's also an 18th century hoax version).
The Bible, in whichever version, is an ancient text no different to the Iliad or Epic of Gilgamesh. Treating it as nothing but fairy tales and lies is intellectual laziness. The presence of divine actors in the narrative is only relevant if you believe in them. The non-existence of Athena doesn't make the Iliad a useless book of fantasy with no historical value whatsoever, and the same can be said of the books of the Bible. They're just ancient, or in this case medieval, texts and should be treated as such.

I think the authors just exaggerated on how they looked. In reality the people probably did sharpen their teeth, there are still places that still do that today after all. They also look different from Europeans so certain facial features really standout to the authors. It is also possible but pure speculation that the people did other cosmetic things to their faces like sliting their cheeks or stuff not too dissimilar from lip plate's or neck rings.

In the Middle Ages, what was true didn’t have to be literally true. Often, literal fact was subordinate to its allegorical and moral meanings. It is plain bad history to read everything literally. That is not scholarship, and no history scholars do that.

I thought many parts of Polo's accounts were disputed as being rehashed versions of other accounts. Also, has the specific site ever been identified, presumably they were not simply talking about India as a whole because one of the accounts distinguishes the DHMs from Hindus. It is interesting to wonder whether these dog descriptions resulted from seeing people with a pronounced prognathis, or in the case of describing them as being akin to a mastiff, a rounded face with sagging skin folds. It is a great pity that the observers were not more particular in their descriptions, to the extent that others or all features were described such as the ears, and whether the subjects had a divided top lip and large canine teeth. No reference was made by the chronicalers of facial or head hair, or colour of skin pigment, or body size and likely weight. Mores the pity. The initial impression of such people may have come from the subjects having flat broad or button shaped noses, rather than the massive hooked noses of many Europeans and middle eastern folk. Apart from that, it is an unconvincing entreaty.
For the longest time people though gorillas were another type of human rather than its own species. It's possible the same happened with these dog headed men.

Interestingly enough I was living at an Orthodox monastery recently and they had a copy of a recent translation of the life of St. Andrew the apostle from Greek. Apparently the apostle also gave accounts of the dog headed men in the Pakistan coastal area. He gave details that they were headbinding cannibles. Weak in strength, but using the fear tactics of their apearances to route enemies. Some of them converted to Christianity and the headbinding tradition slowly died down.
