Yamaha S80 Pulse Potentiometer (Rotary Encoder Switch) Fix / Repair

  • My Yamaha S80 had some minor problems with the Pulse Potentiometers (Rotary Encoder Switch), the Page and Data knob, which you need to set the parameters of a sound. So when turned the Page or Data knob one step it skipped sometimes 2 or more pages at the time, while it has to do one step at the time.
    I opened the case and removed the circuitboard with the potentiometers.
    fortunately the Page and Data potentiometers were easy to open and I discovered that there was a lot of grease on the contact plates, which caused this problem.
    In this video I will explain in details how to fix this problem. It's not very difficult.

    Jerry You Saved the Day! Your video was SO well done and the Grail for what I needed to do to restore my Data knob! Your tour of the working of the pots section got me to thinking that my problem might be just physical as it was jarred by an item falling off the shelf a couple of years ago. By getting in there and knowing what to look for it turned out that three of the four pins holding the pot in place had been bent back by the impact, thus making the knob/pot float free. I am thrilled! I couldn't find a local repair person in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. so had just been living with it. Not only was the information sound, your presentation was perfectly done to follow the details (thank heavens, of course, for the ability to pause and rewind video). I've had my S-80 since they first came out, am thrilled with it, and continue to find new capabilities I didn't know it had. You are Brilliant!!! Much cheaper than a repair shop - I'd like to send you a donation if you do that kind of thing. Thanks again!!! John

    Count me as another happy S80 owner. I was able to fix my data encoder that was damaged during cleaning.

    Many thanks for the video. I’m going to open my S80 today to get the dust out of it and generally check the condition. The video reminded me how to open it correctly. Glad to see that others are still using this “old” keyboard (I got mine in 2000 and it’s still my master keyboard for recording and performance).

    Dank je wel for this video, Jerry, much appreciated! Just picked up a Yamaha S80 with smaller damages. Among other things one pulse potentiometer was loose and I was pretty sure I could fix it with the help of your video. The other potentiometer behaved like yours, it jumped numbers, so I cleaned that one at the same time, too!

    Thank you, thank you thank you and thank you! This video helped me tackle a project that has been intimidating to me for a long time. I first bought my S80 in the year 2000 and I still cherish it to this day. My page knob had 'come loose from the board' years ago from physical damage (my fault) and i've just been dealing with it. Your video helped me so much, I was swearing and cursing the screws, cutting my hands on sharp metal edges as I did it and also bent the pins of the pulse pot/RES, catching them on the cotton from a swab (took a lot of patience and the blade of an xacto knife to get them back just so, but it's all back together and it works! You're correct in your video, I'm seeing screens I didn't even remember existed! So glad my S80 works perfectly again. I might add to anyone trying this that taking that x-acto blade and running it through the tiny tiny gap between the pins helped clear the gunk between them. Also when removing the data pot that was working fine (felt I had to clean it anyways) I bent the pins again just taking it out, but was able to bend them back with gentle pushes with the blade and the end of a wooden applicator stick. Thank you again sir, you are a lifesaver.

      One more thing... for anyone reading this you can search 'yamaha s80 service manual' for wiring diagrams and disassembly instructions. It also tells you how to initiate a test mode when powering on that will check that all your knobs and buttons are working properly.

      Hi Robert, thanks for your comment and glad to read you fixed your S80 :) Only the thing about using a x-acto blade and running it through the tiny gap between the pins: I will not recommend to use that cause that will not solve the grease. A cotton tip with alcohol is the best option, and use the right moving direction as I showed in the video. The other thing I don't understand how it comes that you bent the pins. Was that before you found my video?

    • @0cean0fSt0rms
      @0cean0fSt0rms 3 роки тому +1

      Oh i didnt mean to say i only used a xacto knife. I used swabs wetted with rubbing alcohol just like you showed, but i accidentally caught one of the threads on the end of the contacts being careless. The xacto was just handy as a precision tool to push on each part of the contact individually. Also it seemed to be the perfect width to run between them to make sure they were separated. Me getting gunk out that way was just an added benfit and was entirely accidental :)

    I also have a YAMAHA S80, and the Page and Data knob parts doesnt work.
    I want to buy this part, do you know the part name?

    • @jerrykooyman
      @jerrykooyman  3 роки тому +1

      Hi U YAS, if you only have problems with the Page and Data knob... I'm pretty sure that you have the same problem as I had. Watch my video and follow the steps I explain there to clean these two knobs on the inside. it is the grease of the potentiometers that has run out and touches the contacts, causing them to no longer work properly. If you clean it, you have a big chance that it will work again. Try this first, cause you have to open the Yamaha anyway. I'm sorry, I don't know the part name.. I tried to look it up for you but couldn't find it. The thing that I can tell you is that if you watch the video, you will see on the circuit board that those pulse (rotary) potentiometers has the code EC1 and EC2. If you find more, I will let you know.

    It's not a print plate. It's called a circuit board. Also, it is not a pulse potentiometer. It is called a rotary encoder. That is what the two end parts are.

    • @jerrykooyman
      @jerrykooyman  3 роки тому +1

      In the description you'll see that I mentioned the word 'circuit board'. During making the video, the word 'circuit board' didn't came up in my mind that moment and understand that I'm Dutch. In this case the word Pulse Potentiometer is fine enough, I looked that up. What I will do is to add the 'Rotary Encoder Switch' in de description to make it more clear. Anyway... if anyone read my description and see my video, it is clear enough what I mean. Besides that, with this video I helped someone called Yasu O, you can read his comments.
