  • The Douro Valley steam train and Vouga line meter gauge heritage trains run every weekend throughout the summer months in Portugal. We also take a trip to Entroncamento and the Portuguese national railway museum.
The video looks at the series 1400 locomotive operating on the mira dorou service from Porto as well as the heritage steam and diesel locomotives.

The Douro train was something else. A special feature is that in the loo you can do your business directly onto the tracks as the train chugs along. Old school is the best achool.

9:17 I never thought I would see a 6-wheel Sentinel Diesel, GE 44 tonner, ALCO RSC-2, and a Withcomb 6-axle centercab on the same track, along with a diesel of a French design.
I'm also amazed that this narrow gauge line is still run as an active railway and not just a tourist line in the 21st century. Protugal had a few more of these prior to 2009.

Great review Dad Rail! Nowadays, we can see less camels (that are now mainly servicing Western Line) and much more Schindler cars than in 2018 in Douro Line. Further, Vouga Line has now more cars and touristic services!

I travelled a lot by train in Northern Portugal in the late 80s and early 90s and the 1400s and Schindlers were a regular sight out of São Bento. I remember seeing about eleven Corgo Line Mallets around that turntable in Régua about 1990.

It is such a shame that much of Portugal's railways have been closed. I would love to have ridden the Corgo and Tua lines. It was my plan to go to Mirandela to ride the metro, but this closed a week before I went to Portugal last.

@@DadRail Agreed. A number of sizeable towns even cities don't have a rail connection now. It would be nice to see reopenings although it's cheaper to keep what you already have. I looked on Google maps and the line you mentioned Pampilhosa to Figueira da Foz via Cantanhede is no more. This port is accessed by the line from Alfarelos.

The Spanish DMUs on loan to CP are Class 592 units. They are nicknamed "Camellos" (camels) because of the AC units on top of the roof.

    • @DadRail

That makes sense. I can see why they have that nickname thank you.

OH MY GOD this was before CoVid-19!
I miss being able to travel around without restrictions or having to stick a mask to my face almost all day...

As you describe the signalling felt inadequate when I travelled here. Where were the Tokens I thought? Still we never collided with another train.

The signaling is rather inadequate, yes, I believe currently signal work (and electrification) is being done on the Douro line, but only up to Régua, the stretch from Régua through Tua to Pocinho will remain with manual signalling and diesel units I believe since the volume of trains that pass, as well as the volume of passengers is rather low.

Eu não gosto do cantonamento. Uma linha simples precisa de bastão pilota se não ha CTC e contadores de eixos

I got a notice from CP that there was supposed to be a Christmas edition of the Vouga steam train, "Comboio Histórico do Vouga a Vapor - Edição de Natal". I can find nothing about it on the Internet. Do you know anything about it?

    • @DadRail
      @DadRail  2 роки тому +1

I have not heard anything about it. I will ask my mother in law to find out as she lives not far from Aveiro

From 2 years until now, Vouga line now offers a more complete experience with steam trains. 2021 was offering a lot of weekends with a more complete touristic service. They were offering a christmas edition along 4 weekends if not mistaken. Unfortunately they were all canceled due to COVID restrictions.

The diesel stock look like a class 20 crossed with a class 14 with a 20 engine

Dad Rail yes they did they are probably extremely light so have the ability to accelerate quickly and coast without putting slot of strain on the engine
Great video mate keep up the good work
