can’t deny that u speak even better than me 😂 (I’m a native speaker lol) love hearing people from the western side speak Cantonese cuz it feels like home to me and close to my heart 🤍 kids from HK are speaking mandarin a lot more now and sometimes I’m worried that Cantonese culture would be fading away by time but I’m super thankful that u talked about protecting our own heritage and truly embracing it . glad to know someone cares about it

I definitely feel you. I am from Guangdong Province. I understand that Mandarin is important, but Cantonese is as important. I dont live in China now, but its still sad to think about it.

I’ve seen some interviews in Guangzhou
That kids can barely speak Cantonese and even if they can, they’d prefer mandarin and I can see it’s starting in HK especially in younger generations. I do agree mandarin is important as well but it just hurts my heart to see my root is fading like that.
This is just my opinion but I think Cantonese is a prettier language than Mandarin (maybe bc I grew up speaking it). It’s so sad now when I go to China and the kids in Guangzhao only speak mandarin.
@@xueyingli6034 I feel you as well! Kids are not allowed to speak Cantonese in school and they are losing their culture! Some people ask me why I don’t teach my kids mandarin because it’s “ more important “, well…..Cantonese is my culture and what’s the problem for them to learn their own culture their own mother tongue!

I grew up in the US but luckily am able to speak Cantonese because of my grandma. My close family mainly speaks Cantonese (sometimes with Boluo dialect) so I get the chance to practice speaking and learning from them. It saddens me than Mandarin is being taught in schools rather than Cantonese because it feels like a part of my culture is fading. I'm so grateful you make videos like this because it's quite rare to see and always makes me feel seen and comforted. THANK YOU!

Ppl normally refer to the pandemic as 疫情 (yì qíng) in mandarin! (Mandarin is my 2nd language hehe) Thank you for this video, it gives me such a cosy and warm feeling inside while watching I can’t rly explain haha. Your Cantonese is rly good tho, sadly I can only understand bits and pieces but can’t speak it as the tones are too difficult for me to pick up. Love you!

Weylie I absolutely loved how you articulate the "responsibility" part of learning our heritage language. As an international student who has been away from china for the past 5 years, I can feel my Chinese ability going down day by day... but also I didn't want to lose that part of me so I bought 字帖(Chinese copybooks) and any Chinese books whenever I go abroad. I also try to journal in Chinese every day. Thank you for this!

As a Chinese French who speaks Mandarin & Cantonese and has a similar family story (both sides of my family are from Guangdong but my Dad was born in Vietnam and my Mom in Taiwan), I look up to you so much because I feel like I can refer to someone!! Love this kind of language video and you have done a fab job 好叻女! The written form of Chinese is called 書面語 (find it in articles, books, etc)，which sounds like what you learnt in Chinese school in the States.
For Cantonese (used in Hong Kong and also Guangzhou), we speak in 口語 which is colloquial. For Mandarin, the written form and the spoken form are the same words (or very similar). Also, there are different names for the Chinese characters, Traditional Chinese 繁體中文 is used in Hong Kong and Taiwan； Simplified Chinese 簡體中文 is used in Mainland China, Singapore,etc. I am from HK and I found it confusing to explain to non-Chinese speaking friends but I do love my language :) I speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English, some 潮州話 （a Chinese dialect that my grandparents speak) and a little bit of Japanese ☺️
Taiwanese here!!! I'm so impressed by your Mandarin and am surprised by your desire to visit Taiwan (for some reason for many who grew up in Western cultures it's always Japan, South Korea, or Hong Kong). Hope you get to visit Taiwan soon!!!

I could be wrong but I think the “Mandarin form” is simplified Chinese. Honestly

2. I speak Mandarin and I used to be better but I lost a lot of it after stopping Chinese school. Weylie’s use of words and way of talking are much more native than mine!!
3. I never thought about how hard it would be to keep up with the language once you move out😳 I’m already not keeping up and I speak it with my parents everyday
Regarding #1, I thought the same thing!! Her makeup is simple, but her skin still looks quite nice and glowy!
I think it's more than simplified vs. traditional Chinese characters. There's a more formal way of the language that I think she refers to as "traditional". I can't explain it well, but to Weylie, I think I get what you're trying to describe as the different ways of phrasing things in Mandarin vs. Cantonese as someone who speaks both too! Somehow there's a formalness or some grammar change that's lost or gained when directly translating between the two, so direct translations don't always work.
I think "Mandarin form" is referring to 书面语 (as opposed to the spoken 口语)
I love the part you said about learning Chinese while growing up in Western World. I agree that it’s ourselves’ responsibility to practice more and to find a way of learning. Your Mandarin is excellent👏
Okay this made me really inspired to re-learn Cantonese! I live in England and my parents are from HK 🇭🇰 I speak around a 6 year old’s level where my parents just about understand me but my HK friends do not. I’m now going to look up some online resources to help me improve my tones and become more fluent so I can have deeper conversations with my parents as they don’t speak fluent English. Thank you Weylie for inspiring me to pick this back up ❤️

I'm Korean but lived in Tianjin for 4 years when I was a kid, and my current partner is also Chinese (from Shen Zhen) so I regularly speak Korean with my parents and have been practicing my Mandarin with my partner and his family :). It's funny because I speak with the Beijing dialect so we often laugh at the added "-er" sounds at the end of words, and my partner and I have even begun teaching each other Korean and Mandarin so we can both practice more! This video was so fun to watch Weylie, and thanks for the chinese drama recs hehe!!
Weylie I'm from Taipei, Taiwan and it's so much fun to see you film in Mandarin. As an Asian American who spent the majority of her life speaking English, I think you absolutely killed it!! Normally for centimeters we say 公分/gōngfēn/ instead of 釐米 :) Can't wait for you to come to Taiwan to check out all the good food and cute spots we have to offer! (too bad we still haven't lifted our quarantine measures) Besides Taipei I'd also recommend visiting Tainan for the historical vibes and Hualien for the majestic landscapes of Taroko National Park
Greetings from Hong Kong! My parents are both from Guangdong, my Dad is from Guangzhou and my mom is from Jiangmen (江門開平). When I was young I used to visit my mom's hometown for many times and tried to learn the dialect 開平話, however not long after my relatives have moved to Mexico and the States, I didn't got the chance to practice and perfect it. What's more interesting is that my grandma from my dad side had moved from GZ to Taiwan decades ago, so my uncle and aunt are actually local Taiwanese and their family speak Taiwanese originally. This is definitely a fascinating history of my family, hopefully I'm able to visit them again after the pandemic.

Been watching you for years and always appreciate you embracing your Chinese culture! I’m a Mandarin first language speaker and my husband is from Guangdong who speaks Cantonese and KèJiāHuà. My son was born in the US and we are planning to move back to China. Hopefully he can embrace both western and eastern cultures like you did and be able to speak three languages fluently!
I’m Hmong and I found similar words that we use in our language too! Such as the words “easier” and “friend”. There are actually a lot of Hmong people in Guangzhou where your mom was born as well ☺️ I think speaking your native tongue helps you to better connect with your identity. As for dialects, my mom and dad are both from Guangzhou and speak Toisanese(Taishanese), but are from different towns, so the majority is the words are the same except for some! However, when they immigrated to NYC they picked up on Cantonese and that's the main language we all speak now!

I still remember in your first Cantonese video, many people commented that your accent sounded like those ancient Cantonese TV dramas (more like the original Guangzhou accent back in the days), but now, look at you! I'm impressed by how you're able to speak those three languages so perfectly, they're so different in terms of pronounciation. I mean you're gifted for languages but i don't know that many people that are that flawless in so many languages.
Great video Weylie! Your Cantonese is better than most ABC’s 😂. I find that sometimes if I don’t know a word, I use translators like Bing or Say Hi App to hear the word and the tones used. Google Translate does us dirty for Cantonese when it comes to the modern way of saying words 🤣.

I agree we need to make an effort to keep a language and culture alive. I'm a CBC (Canadian born Chinese) and I make an effort to watch Chinese dramas and speak with my family. I also speak French, so it's like half the time I expose myself to Chinese dramas and the other half I expose myself to French shows haha. Thank you for making this video!! :)

Weylie I highly recommend opening a Red Book (小红书) account! It’s like pinterest but more beauty/life, and it helped me a lot in learning the new slangs in Chinese since a lot of young ppl use it LOL… but also I just love the content there, so very nice to use overall!

I'm from the Philippines and I mainly speak Fukien/Hokkien with my family and learned Mandarin in school. But since I've been out of school for a while, I'm slowly losing my Mandarin. I used to watch a lot of Taiwanese idol dramas and talk shows. It certainly helps. But my understanding is better than my speaking. 😅

Weylie, as I was listening to you speak Cantonese, it sounded so formal and hearing your explanation at the end made a lot of sense. My parents immigrated here from Hong Kong decades ago and I'm glad that I can still converse with them and remember most of my Cantonese since they speak English at a very limited capacity.

It is amazing how fluently you speak mandarin even though you never formally learned Mandarin as i recall. As a Cantonese speaker who did take a mandarin class and did grow up with mandarin speakers around me, mine is no where near as good. Mediocre at best.

Finally had time to sit down and watch this video. I love these videos from you Weylie! My parents are born and raised in Taiwan and immigrated to the US in the 80s, but my whole extended family still live in Taiwan & I would go visit every year pre pandemic. I am able to speak mandarin as that was the primary language we spoke at home, but understand Taiwanese to some extent from just visiting family and my parents speaking to one another.
WEYLIE I've been watching you since the tampon video. I enjoy videos of you speaking Chinese so much and im filled with joy to hear that you are going to do more. I speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Fuzhou dialect and I feel strong connection in this video. I came to the States when I was 10 and the first thing I learned was Cantonese so i learned to speak Cantonese before English. We are Malaysian born Chinese - my father is Hokkien (Fujian 福建）and my mum is Teochew (Chao zhou 潮州）， she speaks Hakka (客家）too. We speak Mandarin at home and we do not go to Chinese stream school 😅

My parents are from Taishan so they speak the dialect from there often. My mom had told me though she likes speaking in Cantonese better hahah. So growing up, I hear my immediate family and relatives speak both. I can understand simple conversation in Cantonese and Taishanese, but it's been difficult for me to speak it. I've also been back and forth with my mandarin skills, definitely want to be more fluent!
love this video sm !! im from hk but born in the uk and i always feel the disconnection and responsibility you are talking about. i am learning cantonese mostly from cantonese101 and some textbooks at my university's library but it is SO difficult as well as finding motivation. once i have enough vocab and grammar i will def be watching dramas and listening to more cantopop. its such a good feeling to know that other diasporas feel the same way :)))
