yk what, ppl can have some arguments and especially during work, but what's important is not messing up with your job during an argument, and to learn from mistakes. good luck fellow lifeguards!
I am not surprised that tempers flared; incredibly intense concentration combined with worrying about the safety of all those people, heat and constant pressure that can end up with tempers boiling over. Thank you Bondi Beach Rescue for all that you do!
Over the radio you have to be more specific that "here" considering they can't see what you see and by far has to be my one of my biggest pet peeves.

He does say where he is but just says here after that, they probably didn't hear him say it the first time, but my comment was more about using radios or walkie-talkies in general.
Hat's off to Singlets. I think he handled the situation so well. Tried to be calm, respectful and educate... But one small problem - Mario is Italian lol🤣😂🙈 Get's fired up in 2 seconds and has no business taking advices from anyone 🤣 no matter how reasonable they are or how calm the person is, or how respectfully advice is delivered😁😆
He wants the money, doesn't want to work. It's typical here in the US too. Everyone wants a job, no one wants to work.

It's a beach. "Here" could be a multitude of places. There's a system for a reason

Dont mean to be harsh against Mario, but his inability to empathize with the person on the other end of communication when saying "here" makes Mario a liability.

mario doesn’t seem to fit in with the team at all, in a job like this they need to meld together perfectly and not get overly defensive when they make mistakes.
These guys all need to speak the same language with the same key lingo. While someone is drowning, Mario wants to argue about his right to use whatever verbal signals he pleases. I would have sacked him on the spot.

More signs in most common visiting languages might help. Large letters. STAY between the flags. Maybe on that back wall AND as they enter from the street. Can you put some markers in the water telling them to not go past the markers. Like a ball buoy. Or a flag buoy.

Once he called him an idiot and a child, he lost. It was as simple as asking him from now on to use landmarks, end of conversation. As a leader you have to learn manage all kinds of people not just agreeable ones.

I don't understand people who take out their frustrations on other people. Like one i probably wouldn't even be mad if someone helped me do my job when I was actually making a mistake. I've only ever once argued with a coworker, when my boss refused to believe me about something I knew I had done and got rude about it.

None of these guys were accurate enough! Why not hey, 50 feet left, then 100 feet right, simple enough to get him in the vicinity. They should have a pre agreed upon verbiage for directions so everyone is on the same page.😎👍✌
That’s why they use ramps to guide them, I’m in front of ramp 1 and there’s two swimmers needing help, the jet ski operator knows, ok, ramp one

Do you think I could be a lifeguard at Bondi if I was a British person?
Yes but the main thing is your swimming and board ability in the surf. If you can comfortably make it out in 10ft swell either swimming or on a board. Theres loads of other beaches where you can be a payed lifeguard aswell with all vastly different conditions. A few of my friends are lifeguards and they were physically able to do that at about 13-14 so id say its doable for anyone.
Theres no restrictions on what nationality you are just tests to see if you can physically and mentally cope with the job. Lifeguards also have to do an anuual pool swim to ensure they are still at the level required for the job. Im not sure of the exact numbers but theyd be online somewhere so you could try to emulate that test in a pool.

Depends where you live I suppose etc if you live far inland and are rural I doubt they are taught to swim as much I reckon compared to the coastal lot
They might learn how to swim using pools or lakes and that’s nothing compared to the ocean. There’s plenty of good swimmers who are used to a pool and then get blindsided when they get into the ocean
who would have thought hiring someone who barely speaks English was a good idea to be put in a life saving position.
Wow. So much ignorance in what you said. He does speak English. being bilingual is a benefit, not a hindrance, especially somewhere like Bondi. Do you realize how many people from all over the world come to Bondi?
To say no one who has an accent should be is these careers is incredibly ignorant. So: lifeguards, doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, EMS, etc. should not be saving lives every day? Not to mention…neither Canada nor the USA is leading in education on a global level. Being an immigrant doesn’t make someone less intelligent or less valuable to society.
