Flamenco Guitar Master Vicente Gomez

  • Опубліковано 17 тра 2008
  • This 1950s video features composer, guitarist Vicente Gomez performing some of his Alegrias composition.
For those unfamiliar with Gomez, he was born in Madrid in 1911 and got an early start in music performing flamenco in his father's red light district tavern by the age of 8. Concert pianist Arthur Rubenstein eventually heard him play (presumably not while frequenting Madrid's red light district!) and encouraged him to pursue a professional career. He toured the world performing in the 1930s and became a U.S. citizen in the 1940s. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and discharged in 1946, after which he opened a nightclub in New York, performing classical and flamenco music on his guitar nightly. During this period he also served as President of the New York Classical Guitar Society. In the 1950s he moved to Los Angeles and opened "The Academy of Spanish Arts" to teach classical and flamenco guitar, flamenco dancing, Spanish language, etc. He was also a frequent contributor to film music.
Vicente Gomez passed away in December 2001 at the age of 90, just two months after his wife passed away.

I studied classical and flamenco guitar under Gomez 50 years ago. A great and gentle person. I still have compositions and notations in his handwriting.

Oh god. That sounds so nostalgic. To have handwritings of a person dead long ago, and having the memories flood you.

I'd really like to know how he achieved that amazing right hand technique(obviously through practice but what exactly)! He's definitely one of the best guitarists i've ever heard.Easily in the top 3.That playing......my God!

I read he grew up in his fathers spanish bar, and learnt to play from the passing gypsy guitarists. Self taught musos are always No.1. Long live Senor Gomez!

An extraordinary artist and gentleman. He co-founded the Academy Awards at his club in New York City, La Zambra. His studio was next to my office in Burbank years ago and he set some of my songs to classical guitar. A cherished memory.

Rand - me too. I studied with Gomez more than 50 years ago and had a panic attack and quit the day before I was supposed to do my first concert. I went on to have a pretty good career on guitar but not flamenco or classical guitar. I will always remember one day I showed up for a lesson and reached into my pocket and pulled out a guitar pick. I thought "The Senor" was going to cry. He looked into my eyes and said with this heavy Spanish accent "was a matta you kiddy, you wanna you whole life to play like a hill billy"? He was a very sweet man one thing I remember about him is he loved his dogs and had Doberman Pinchers.

This is so mind blowing, words cannot convey. It's almost super human how well he plays.

Vicente Gomez had an organic festive happiness that exploded. He plucked the sound of Spain from the guitar and it told a story of romance & conquest.
When the music takes you somewhere visually and you are physically wrapped up in it's temperance before the next volley, it inspires. You leave the room numb from it's effect. But that's just my experience.

I heard about Vicente Gomez from my aunt and uncle who lived in Whittier, California. My aunt, Esperanza (Atunes) Drayer and Uncle Herman Sylvester Drayer knew him very well. They had autographed photographs of him and mentioned his name several times. While watching a movie one day I saw him playing. It was beautiful.

This is what im talking about, a guy who can play and smile. You can tell he loves his instrument and his art. Some people just focus too much on learning and forget about "music". Although flamenco / classical guitar is very serious and requires alot of technique and practice.

Vincente Gomez wrote and played all the guitar music for a movie titled "The Fighter" back in the 50's.
The male lead in that movie was Richard Conte. I bought the LP album when it came out. But I played it so much I wore the record out. I wish I could find a CD of it. The music was outstanding.

Unfortunately, he seems not to become famous. With pleasure and happiness I could meet him in Video. many thanks, indeed.
