my 85' 300D sounds just like this on start, 306k miles. I can do a cold start with an immediate key turn ( no waiting for glowplugs ) and it starts up in a split second. Love it
I love diesel idle sound, i think Mercedes has nice idle sound in their diesels, but for example the 2.5tdi you can find in Volkswagen transporter T4 has a really nice idle sound as well imo. Prob for most people they all sound the same, not me. There is a clear difference in the sounds they make. a 2.5 tdi sounds better than the 1.9D for example, again imo.
I swear I've seen one of your videos where you mention the ridge along the top of the engine as being a good sign, specifically that it meant a factory rebuild? Am I remembering that correctly? I can't find that particular video, I've watched too many since I'm on the hunt for an 85 turbo and they're all running together lol.
Both are good and both have their pluses. It really comes down to the condition of the car and the maintenance that has been done on it. That is more important than the year.
Greta videos as always. If I let my 300d sit for an hour or more it will not start unless I pump the primer and reprime the system. Any insight on this? I rebuilt my lift pump already.
my 84 CD with 220K miles starts and sounds exactly the same. compression is super strong, one cylinder even had 430psi and that was number 5 (usually the weakest)
I can sleep the whole night listening to these wonderful diesels.
Very meditative.
It remembers me the sound of those taxis still running in Germany with that engine. Lovely cars, thanks for share these videos.
Glad you enjoyed it
These engines are not allowed anymore in German city's, unless you register the vehicle as an Historic one with the license plate that indicates an H
That sound brings me back to Copenhagen, Denmark airport, -taking a taxi into town in the early 80's

Beautiful 300D Kent! I love how quickly it caught, barely heard the starter.
Sounds like one of my old cats when it was happy. :)
😺
Love that sound. I miss my ‘83. And my ‘87. Both were fantastic cars.

A testament to your great work and expertise!
Sounds heavy duty, like a tractor
🚜
ASMR for diesel engine lovers. 😎👌🏻
I'm loving this sound
that's what you get with a factory remanufactured engine. thanks for teaching me how to spot those
Oh, right! Spot on
these idi engines sound so different than a DI cummins of the same era
That is a healthy Turbo diesel
If sounds were addictive
Have 1 owner 82 low mileage that sounds the same. Thank you video.

Love the color combo
Sounds just like my 83 W126 SD! FAST AS $@!$ LOL
I have the same year and it is fast...I agree with him

I found it! It was in the story of Bubbles. :)
What did he say is the metal knock sound we can so clearly hear? I used to love that sound on my dad's 300TD
Ignition knock
Beautiful
Gorgeous
What would you recommend to buy '83 or '85 Mercedes Turbodiesel Sedan? Thank you in advance.

Check for tightness of all banjo bolts on the fuel lines and especially the bolt for the main fuel filter
Why does the air filter move side to side? I see that all the time. There is a slight wobble. Is that normal?
It is bolted to small rubber mounts underneath the housing. Required since these engines are subject to high vibration.

It good, a softer noise can indicate worn injectors.
Sounds like my jeep
