This kind of thing is so helpful, particularly to someone teaching themselves, the way I am currently trying to do. The tones are hard for me because I've found my instinct is to somehow increase emphasis rather than pitch to try and change the tone, which obviously isn't correct, but for some reason harder to practice for me. Having it explained this way definitely helps me grasp the concept a bit more. I'm glad you talked about the difference of romanisation vs Thai letters as well. I've found that when trying to sound out certain words it's almost impossible because we don't have that sound in English at all. I also speak Spanish, so I've drawn a little from that, but a lot of it is going to be me memorising the Thai letters and sounds as is. I've been avoiding romanisations as much as I possibly can because I find they actually confuse me more. I didn't realise the different class of letter in Thai actually informs the tone, but it makes so much sense. 4 minutes and you've made a huge difference for me already. Thanks so much for this!

I agree with your video 100% and I would also add that when many thai teachers transliterate thai to english it is completely wrong. I think thai teachers providing transliteration is the absolute worse thing to do. If a person is serious about learning thai they can form their own because of the same reason you just mentioned but in reverse because English is not a Thai Teachers native tongue so they spell the English version of word completely wrong. Even the names of some cities in Thailand are spelled wrong in english for example Phuket, it definitely doesn't sound like Phuket in Thai, it is more like Phuget with a G not with a K.

Yes, the best way is to learn a new language directly from its alphabet and learn how each language produce sounds. And then leave romanization away!

I am learning Thai and the most difficult part for me is the tones. I always mix them up and forget them after I practiced them. Do you have a tip to remember them?

I will share my tips on one of my UA-cam live streams. Anyway for tones, the most important thing is to fine tune the 5 keynotes. It takes a lot of practices, several kinds of cross practices to build up your pronunciation pattern.

could you make a video about exceptions to the tone rules? explaining why they happen and how? I can't find any information on that online, for example: ก็ - why is it falling tone when it should be low tone? is it just a random exception? is there a history behind it? was it originally spelled differently? you know, that sort of thing...

This information is in my online course. Anyway, I'm planning for some UA-cam live streams. I will explain this in one of my lives.

I’ve always wondered why my Thai roommate used to tease me saying English words when he had a strong Thai accent. He hated the way I said “left.” He’d say “why you say “lef-duh” “lef-duh?” I realize now Thai consonants don’t release that puff of air the same way English does. He still annoyed me but at least I see it from his perspective now. ขอบคุณครับ
