Paul and Nicko are one of the main reasons I play drums today. Although Paul is not much of a soloist i'll admit. This is actually the FIRST drum solo I've ever heard him play. But on an album like DIVINE INTERVENTION..he makes Lombardo look like Ringo Starr!! HA
Dimitris dm Listen to Divine Intervention from Slayer. You'll hear all kinds of things Lombardo can't/couldn't do. :) Especially the drum sound overall. But Lombardo is a MUCH better soloist though.
I know the album....Paul s drumming is awesome but i dont think that Lombardo could not over play them songs. He is not a better soloist...as a matter of fact Lombardo s weak point are the solos
Yeah sorry Jer I gotta stick with Dimitris dm on this one. Paul is amazing, for sure. I revere him bigtime and he's as amazing live as he is in the studio... but the need to compare / diss Lombardo is plain silly. Dave's well skilled and accomplished. Frankly, even using Ringo as a negative comparison discredits your whole perspective: While Ringo may not be the speedy flashy trickster, he is unquestionably one of the most solid and tight drummers of all time... and if you think you could write drums to Beatles songs that are better than Ringo's... well I think you need to check your arrogance, and think about the music a bit more.
pieuche213 The sixteenth notes in the feet of Sex Murder Art drastically slow down after the opening fill and end up sounding like sad sevenlets over half notes rather than just sixteenth notes in four.
Wow!!! Wow! I mean......Wow!! Paul Bostaph is the most underrated drummer today! And it's only because he plays second Fidel to the God of the drum set, aka Dave Lombardo! So we slayer fans see him as a disappointment just because it isn't Dave. And true, me too, I prefer to see Slayer with Dave. But with that said, I can't think of a better replacement for Dave than Paul. And that's saying a lot!
Bostaph is a pro drummer and plays all the songs perfectly live. Lombardo is more of a feeling drummer who plays super hard with not as much technique. Paul could go in the studio an play for any band. Lombardo does have a style that us old metal heads love but dont get it twitsted Paul can play anything. I dare anyone to show me Lombardo playing anything off of Divine Intervention like Paul plays it with the quads and triplets, which was a masterclass in drumming that hardly anyone had seen at the time in metal.
I’ve seen both Paul and Dave twice with Slayer each. All I can say is that I respect and appreciate both of them for what they’ve done. Two of my favorite Slayer albums are Seasons in the abyss and god hates us all, so go figure. They both have total different styles. The work Paul has done with Testament is amazing. Every thing Dave touches outside of Slayer turns into gold. As a drummer my self I’ve stolen a thing or two from both of them, as well as any other drummers I have seen perform. By the way, I got my eye on one of those Stewart Copeland blue bell signature rides. That’s one sweet ride.
This snare is descent, no doubt, but not entirely suitable for Paul's brutal assault. I wish Yamaha and Paul would collaborate on a signature model. If there's any doubt of how strong a demand there'd be, I for one would put my money upfront if pre-orders became available. I mean no disrespect to Yamaha, your doing a great job, but I think Paul deserves a piece with his name on it. Perhaps something to consider.............? Cheers!
I would imagine he is fine with the snare, although I don't think this is his actual kit. I think he actually uses a Yammy Oak Live Custom these days. Back in the day Divine Intervention era. he was rocking that famous chrome Artstar II....with a brass piccolo snare. At least live, hard to imagine that thing sounded like his snare did on that record and they changed it for recording. Or that was the snare and some studio magic was involved, doubtful though.
In my personal opinion and im a huge metal fan its all i listen to Pantera is my all time favorite band, but i think the best drummer nowadays is definately Eloy Casagrande from Sepultura i even think hes better than Igor Cavalera
the kit sounds very nice, the cymbals pour sugar on ears, but the snare actually sounds pretty bad.. the snappy snares rattle harsh and unpleasant to me, the tone itself is way too highpitched and ringy to be powerful enough to complement this style of drumming. i'm sure it's a mattar of proper tuning though
Paul's contribution to drumming is excellent. His playing with Slayer is on par with Lombardo. But I have to say this solo was like nails on a blackboard. No finesse at all. He can do better. I don't know what happened here.
Bostaph's meter is all over the place. He speeds up and slows down twice in the first minute. Lombardo is the greatest thrash metal drummer ever. Bostaph seems like a great guy, but Dave Lombardo he's not.
don't get me wrong.... i have alwyas loved slayer and think lombardo is god..... but, i also think bostaph is awesome.... not only is he a cool guy (watch any interview) he is also a lombardo fan! love his drumming on god hates all
Well.....Sometimes being Sloppy is okay. We are human beings after all, not drum machines/robots. That being said, I'm not super impressed with what Paul Does here
Im a Yamaha guy, but let's be honest, this is not Paul snare sound, Yamaha, need to make a bad ass bell bronze snare , all other cpmpagny have one. Yamaha one would be killer. Go
Paul, you kick ass! The best day will be when you and Dave play together.
one of my favorite drummer s
Rich Harris 2nd to Dave McClain for me
me to!!! one of the best thrash metal drummers ever!!!
2:52 Intro of killing fields!
Incredible drumming 🥁
Not sloppy. Loose, with a 70's stadium rock feel and triplets on the kicks, but not sloppy.
He was at his peak on, "Divine Intervention."
He`s not good at solos (obviously), but he writes great parts for bands.

debatable....
What a great-looking kit. It's my dream to be able to afford a kit like that in the future.
Dude!!!! Always awesome to see you play brother!

trop fort mon Paul! Divine forever
This kid has potential. He should be in a band!
NOW YOUR STANDING IN MY KILLING FIELDS!!!! 1995 MESA, AZ!!!
paul is just amazing
The first time i heard Gemini i gave up drums. Paul is a beast on that track
Instead of giving up, you should get inspired by someone's playing
Exactly im a drummer myself and love pauls playing there will be someone better than you but just be happy with what you can do .and practice
I think the drummer who played on that track is, John Dette.
@@Swisstriplet no on the CD it is writen Paul Bostaph
It s paul bostaph not John.
Overt enemy drum video paul come on guy those beats are legendary!!
What a beautiful sounding kit, feather touch Tom's
Awesome triplets on the feet!
I hear 8ths and 16ths, no triplets

@@papalazzzaru OK, I hear them at 2:28 or so.
Ya I heard/saw lots of triplets on the feet. Two hand strokes then three with the feet. Like a five stroke roll. Tommy Aldredge did this alot.
we Love you pauL!. pLs stop comparing pauL to dave.. they're both great.. they have their own unique styLe & greatness as a individuaL...
Paul is better in the hands, but he has really sloppy feet though.
Exactly! That's what I'm talking about.
sex murder art, dittohead, serenity in murderer, sloppy feet?!?!

Goddamnit it's so fucking clean
How can you achive that bass drum sound ? Is it a special kind of drumhead? sounds pretty cool
Drum heads help but you need to tune the drum 🥁 really good Im not the best at it myself. Just mess around til you find the sound you like 👍
Very sick! That kit sounds great too!
01:46 yeah very cool :)
I don’t know what I like better. Yamaha drums or Yamaha dirt bikes? Love them both!
Yamaha makes a lot great stuff from stereo bikes drums etc .i have a Yamaha tour custom set and i love it.

yeah as he's said in interviews he went beyond his best to try and be as good as dave when he joined

When he was with Testament, Yamaha gave him drums with his name on the badges. I saw the video on here, Yamaha Corporation of America

The opening bit with the snare all choked - sounds awful to me. Lord knows why people do that.
I've always loved a tight snare. I've mine cranked all the way so its silent in a split second
Choked snare, sounds horrible.
