  • "This piece was new to me, but it's one of Bach's better fugues." Organist Dorien Schouten talks about the 'Little' Fugue in G minor, which she performed for All of Bach. This short piece has a surprisingly long theme.

These are so fantastic, particularly around the organ works as there's such a world of choice for the artist, not just in execution at the keyboard but in choice of instrument and stops. Mevr. Schouten's BWV578 has a stately tempo with space for the instrument to speak and a light touch, it was a joy to listen to. Thank you most kindly for the insight and performance and as always thanks to DNB and their commitment to this amazing project.

Many, many years go. I had the opportunity to play on this organ. Recently I have played this fugue on the organ where I am organist. It is quite an amazing fugue. Very neat to see a description of this fugue on this organ!!

Many years ago my organ teacher Bram Beekman remarked that the last bit of the piece seems to contain 'Wer nun den lieben Gott lässt walten". This fragment is coincidentially in this clip at 2:54.

Was that a translation error? Completely “new to you,” or “new to you” as a performer? Definitely, one of Bach’s best and most accessible pieces - I never tire of it the way I can tire of other frequently-played compositions (I’m looking at you, Pachelbel.)

What exactly does she mean with "one of his better fugues"...?

I think you should replace "better" by "renowned". So it would be "One of Bach's renowned fugues but new to me"...makes it sense?

I assume she means that the general standard of his fugues is already high, but this one jumps out in particular as one of the absolute masterpieces
