    Read the information provided below the video: the dance GROUP is called Edinburgh Gay Gordons (there is also a London Gay Gordons and a Manchester Gay Gordons.) The display is a choreographed amalgam of 3 Scottish dances - De'il Amang the Tailors, Wild Geese and Dashing White Sergeant.

    “Gay Gordon's” refers to a Scottish popular 19th century ceilidh folk dance where all dancers share the same steps. It in it's turn refers in part to an honorable long established Scottish regiment, made up of “Men in Kilts originally”,unfortunately now disbanded.

    If this involved a group of gay females - all of them lesbians - it's very likely that there would be no adverse or insulting homophobic comments being made in here....such double standard indeed. Gay men, gay women - so what's the difference? The dance routine being performed here - the Gay Gordons known to everyone here in the UK - is just wonderful.

    That is fantastic! Well done guys. I have danced the Gay Gordons with, mostly, women over the years and love this interpretation. Looks like you all had a great time too

    I'll rephrase that...no one is claiming an ownership to be proud to be Scottish, just that anyone CAN be proud to be Scottish ;-)

    OK this is not Gay Gordons the dance. So, since it's all men I will go with the other meaning of the word, LOL.

    And it looks to me that this clip means that everyone can celebrate Scottish culture and tradition , no one is claiming ownership of anything other than a proudness to be Scottish

    This is not the gay Gordon's this is ocaridoan strip the willow

      The Gay Gordons is an amateur dance troupe and I suspect them stripping the willow is a bit of tongue in cheek inuendo! 😄

    The Gay Gordons is not a homosexual terminology...its actually a Scottish Accordion group Rob Gordon who played a distinctive style of Scottish dance sets involving reels and country dance sets in 4/4 time, and pipe tunes !

      Getting ready to do something together to the tune of Mairi's Wedding.
      'Step we gaily, on we go' 😁
      Did you miss the 'LGBT' bit in the description?

    Therefore as a visible and valid form of celebrating male culture, stamina and team working this is a good example.
    Unlike some other video choices ???

      An MD once told me of a little trick of his.As he danced backward and forward,he`d pick out a lassie in the crowd and opening and closing the pegs as he danced to and from her,he`d note a clear chapel hat pegs reaction :)

    When men in skirts dance together, what else can it be but.......The Gay Gordon?

  • @Huttworker
    @Huttworker 12 років тому

    Gay does mean happy, homosexuals (males) use the term to describe that they're happy and unencumbered. So we haven't lost the word's meaning. Oh I liked the video.

  • @ewangoc
    @ewangoc 12 років тому

    The word gay has evolved from it's carefree and happy origins which I am sure you would agree is demonstrated in this video through it's main stream interpretation of homosexuality (there is a reference to the dance group here) to a more current interpretation of something that is silly or weak nowadays, which this video does not display. If you have ever tried doing any form of technical dance you would be aware of this.

    Are any of these guys called Gordon?

  • @hwatts56
    @hwatts56 12 років тому +2

    I don't mind if someone's LGBT [lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender] if they don't negatively impact others. They're pretty aggressive though; stole the word "gay" which previously meant happy & carefree, nothing to do with sexuality at all. The Gay Gordons is an old Scottish dance which had NOTHING to do with homosexuality, neither do kilts, a traditional Scottish heterosexual mans attire.

  • @ewangoc
    @ewangoc 12 років тому

    These comments sound a touch homophobic in tone also they seem lacking in a basic grasp of the English language or indeed Scottish culture which has evolved merged and toddled along for a few centuries before you lot emerged on to god's earth.

    But I wanted to see gay gordon, where he be? Where is the, I came for the, Gay GordON. Thy Gordon whichest be Gay.

  • @Verderer
    @Verderer 12 років тому

    But I have to say this about gay females - lesbians - they would be quite unsuited for performing the Gay Gordons - it is essentially a masculine dance and for an all female group to dance to it would look a bit strange to be honest with you.

    for god sake,Get another name....this name does not belong to you, so don't hijack it! We already can't use the word "gay" for anything, bringing to mind the WW2 song Gracie Fields song, "Wish me luck when you kiss me goodbye"..the word "gay' is in it, meaning HAPPY! This is name of a Scottish Dance, it is not yours to take!
