In this video, I test the Superlux R102 MK II Ribbon Microphone on two different amplifiers. I also blend the Superlux R102 Ribbon microphone with an SM57 and a Rode NT2A microphone.
The goal of this video is to see what makes Ribbon microphones so special for recording the electric guitar amplifiers as well as how they compare with and work in conjunction with other microphones.
I test the Superlux R102 a few different ways including:
Up close to the guitar amplifiers
    Back a little bit
    Room Sounds
All of the times codes and comparisons are listed below. Skip back and forth to find out which one you like the best.

I have this mic - it's excellent. A ribbon might not "impress" people on it's own but they are much easier to work with in a mix. By the way I just got the new Artist TC59 tele with bullbuckers and WOW!

You know you can upgrade most cheap ribbon mics by soldering a better transformer in it. It opens up the high-end and you won’t even need a second mic anymore. (Though two mic’s is still awesome for a wider sound image)

For me, I liked the ribbon at a distance otherwise it sounded muffled up close. But the rode sounded best up close and a bit thin at a distance. Those superlux mic's are pretty good for the money. I've got one of their 50's style mic's and sounds pretty good for vocals and surprisingly doesn't squeal too much when you crank the gain. Definitely worth checking out if you're on a budget for mics.

WooW i love so much the vintage style of this mike ....but it's a lil' bit bassy !!!
the T.Bone RB100 ( a Royer 121 chinese cheap copy) has a more open sound but that one is really cool indeed .....even better than the Condenser mike //// i use mine to mike up my Power Amp ENGL 840/50 & my stereo Cab Peavey N blend this signal with the signal of my Gt100 in 4CM with my E530 Tube Preamp going thru a Palmer PGA-04 Cab-Sim N then back into my Gt100 (to simplify!) running then Emulated Out + Line Out of the E530 into a Mackie VLZ4 mixer going thru a ART pro VLA Dual Channel Opto-Tube Kompressor .....am i enough clear 🤪💩🎃 sorry i forgot to mention a DBX 160A VCA Komp & a 10 bands EQ from MXR 🤡

    Hello ! How does r102 compares to t.bone rb500 ?

  • @tonedowne

Just get an e906 and forget about it.
Double mic-ing is cool but there is a lot of room for error, and if you are stacking up guitar tracks in a recording, things get pretty hectic with everything double mic-ed.
If you are using a ribbon only on the way in, you have to put it through a decent hardware eq like an inductor or Pultec to get the top end happening. It sounds great when you do, but a decent eq will cost more than the mic.
I found that trying to boost the top end in the box doesn't work properly, maybe because you need to be creating the top end with the eq rather than just boosting it.

The blend of the 2 had a harsh top end. The others on their own were ok. Id probably save up for a better ribbon.
