      @@jafethuerta hey sorry for the late reply! I don’t have a 121 here at the studio but I’ve used them quite a bit in other studios and hiring them in here for certain things. I haven’t done a side by side comparison but it definitely has that Royer vibe to it. It’s a much more vintage voiced ribbon than something like the AT4080 so it’s a bit fatter, but not as dark as something like the Coles 4038. If you want that 121 tone this will get you very close

      @chjadam 11 місяців тому

      @@James-Chapman-Drums I was a bit wrong, my Koss 1A are electrostats. An electrostat has a diaphragm, usually a polymer, stretched tight and between two charged stators. The stators need a high voltage supply to charge them. A ribbon is a strip of aluminum (usually) that is sometimes corrugated, that hangs between rows of permanent magnets

    Damn, it sounds good! Nice song/mix btw!! but without eq or processing, how would it compare to other ribbon mics out there such as the Golden Age R1, Avantone Cr-14, sE voodoo vr1, Royer r-10 or even the rode NTR, hehe thanks!

    • @James-Chapman-Drums
      @James-Chapman-Drums  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks! Its a very dark and vintage sounding Mic. quite rounded but handles transients surprisingly well. As with anything in the context of a mix there will always be some EQ and compression but even if I were using 121's that would be the case to make all the elements blend nicely. For the most part the compression was minimal as I prefer to control the dynamics in my playing as much as possible so only 2-3db gain reduction and the EQ was mostly just high and low passing plus a low-mid cut in the drums and a slight high shelf boost of about 3db on the guitars.

    Hello man! My name is Arthur, I'm from Brazil.I have a question... You used the mike as over for the drums, do you know if they can keep up with great amounts os spl ? I had a ribbon years ago but when i put it in front of a kick, it was the end of it! So, that's my concern! Thanks! Great video

    • @James-Chapman-Drums
      @James-Chapman-Drums  Рік тому

      The ribbons will work over the kit no problem and actually thats a great placement for them! In front of the kick is always difficult because they're so sensitive to air blasts with the ribbon being so thin. I would suggest using a pop shield if you're going with that placement or tilting the mic down at an angle. A good way to check is to get the drummer to play and you use your hand pulling back until you cant feel the air anymore and then mic from there. Hope this helps!

I have used a couple of expensive mics but that underdog called the ar5 is a hidden gem that knocks every other one outt the park.. can't recommend it enough.. if you pair the ar5 with a tube pre-amp ( i got the art tube preamp ), I get nothing but lush outta of the pair. • @James-Chapman-Drums
      @James-Chapman-Drums  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! No, ribbon mics are technically dynamics mics. They're also very delicate because the ribbon is so thin so make sure you don't use phantom power or you're likely to blow them. Also make sure they never feel any air. if you have one in front of a bass drum for example you can use a pop shield or position it far enough back and at a slight angle so that the air from the bass drum doesn't get to it.

    What processing was done on the drums? Thanks

    • @James-Chapman-Drums
      @James-Chapman-Drums  2 роки тому

      From what i remember, I EQ’d each mic which was really mostly adding in a bit of 3k on the overhead and a high shelf from around 8k and then took out some 4-500hz on the front mic and added a little bump at around 60hz. The top mic also had a 4:1 compressor with probably 4db of reduction with a fairly slow attack and fast release. I didnt compress the front mic. Then i bus’d the two together and added a compressor that was only giving 1-2db max reduction just to glue them together a bit and added a plate for some ambience since I wasnt using a room mic. Nothing out of the ordinary and generally quite subtle compared to typical drum processing.
