Setting Up a Kick A** Home Movie/Media Server Using Plex

  • I've been using this piece of software called Plex to stream all my movies and videos all around my house and to all my devices, anytime and virtually anywhere on the planet.
    Free Plex software download:
    www.plex.tv/downloads/
    The best (physical) hard drive you can buy:
    geni.us/wdharddrive
    My favorite home media device:
    geni.us/newappletv
    If you have tons of movie or video files stored on your computer or hard drive or network attached storage (NAS), this is a great way to stream them so you can watch and enjoy them anywhere, anytime.
    Its really easy to use and pretty simple to setup. In this video I show how to set the app up on your computer and start using it to stream all your digital media including some demo's of how it all works.
    Hope you enjoy!
    PS. They also have a very cool live tv, ota HD function which if you are into cord/cable cutting I will have a video demoing that very soon.

    To manually scan one of the folders, hover your mouse to the right of whichever library you want to manually scan, click on the 3 dots menu, and then choose Scan Library Files.

    I’m so impressed with Plex, I’m more than likely purchasing the lifetime pass. It’s rare that anything totally blows me away, and Plex has gone above and beyond my expectations. Had Plex for a while on my computer for a year , but didn’t really utilize fully or really understood what it could do until I got my smart tv and Plex was an included feature. It’s totally changed the way I do entertainment! With the iPhone app, I can access my ENTIRE library from anywhere as long as my computer is on at home! Love it!! I’m a fan for life! Please don’t ever go away Plex! 😆

    Great video on how to set this up! The update interval on your plex media server (below the update automatically option) was set to 15 mins. That's probably why it takes a "minute" to show new videos! See if you can change that setting to a smaller number and it should refresh quicker hopefully! :)

    Paying for plex is definitely worth it. If you want to access your plex OUTSIDE of your home network, then you NEED to pay for it. AKA if you want to access all of your videos say at the airport or on a road trip or anywhere outside of your house, you have to pay. I love how as long as my PC is on, I can watch my movies anywhere I am like at a friends house or something like that.

    Does plex automatically recognise if a new folder is added to the master file location or do you have to force it to update to get your new files to become available?

    Hi! love this video. I have to say that I have had this for a couple years and love love it. It is so organized and I literally have all my movies in one area. I do have a question. I think my computer is having a rough time trying to connect to my tv. It freezes a lot and I find that I have to restart my PS4 often. the remote access is always showing a red exclamation point. I can't get it to stay. Do you think it is an internet problem or I am just not setting the port number right?

    • @techwave870

      i think a lot of new people getting into plex don't really understand it too much so when they search on youtube on how to use it or how to install it, they usually use the word "server" everytime they search how to set up plex. i know i did when i first started using plex.

    • @eric1757
      @eric1757 6 років тому +3

      TechWave exactly, that's way stated that it depends on how you have everything set up. If you have a dedicated PC or system that's in an always on state then PLEX can be set up to function as a sever. Personally the only way that I would set the service up is through the use of a home media or standard server configuration.

    Running Plex for 4+ years now with a lifetime PlexPass... Would highly suggest running a FREENAS server or NAS equivalent to house your files/server on... It's much more robust (runs on UNIX) than running it on a Microsuck system... plus it is FREE! Good luck - happy streaming!

    OKay, Really good software, really really good software. No more thumb drives and carrying shit files to my old ass TV that won't support most codecs. Very good intro video. It took me a few minutes, especially because I didn't want to make an account at first, but it works very very smoothly now. Can't stress how much I like it after only a couple of minutes of using it. Streaming files directly from my Downloads folder to TV, it's brilliant. Hey, thanks for the informative video. I still have a couple of question about Plex that maybe you or another commenter could help with?
    I know the Plex rule of thumb regarding processing power needed from your CPU for 1080p transcoded streams, but I was wondering about other system or networking requirements which might limit my home media server. For example, how much RAM is recommended for a Plex server? Also, in situations where we are away from home and multiple family members want to stream content over the net, is the number of streams your server can handle at once dictated by your home internet upload speed? If so, how many streams can be handled at once? Is it like one stream for every 2mbps upload speed? Or does it not work like that?
    Thanks

    • @Techfreshnessgaming
      @Techfreshnessgaming 6 років тому +1

      hey derek, sorry for the delayed response. i would say as far as ram 8 should be fine but any system to me these days should have 16gb, unless you were gonna run your server off a laptop or something. as far as network requirements really the only one is to have a decent router, how old is your current one? the number of streams you can serve in your house is only dependent on your internal network speed, nothing to do with the internet, so thats why having a good router is important, you want one that has mi-mo, which is like multi in multi out and does better with doing multirple streams to multiple devices. does that help?

      You need 123copy software to copy the movies to MP4 format

    Does each movie have to be in it's own folder within the main movie folder.

    The problem I'm running into is having a computer capable enough to have this function properly. I have to reduce the streaming speed a lot just to get it to play without buffering but then the screen is pixelated. What PC systems are you guys using to make this work correctly. Thanks.

      ah dang, my pc is decently stout, although almost a couple years old at this point. how old is yours? plex is usually typically light weight. i7 5820, but any recent i5 should be able to handle it pretty solidly

      You don't need a super powerful computer to run it unless you're watching everything in HD. I used it with 2 computers, tablet, phone and a console all running it at the same time watching various things on a computer built in 2010.

    Get yourself a external hard drive with plenty of space to store your media to conserve your PC's hard drive. I connected a 2tb external SSD and works beautifully.

    is there anyway to download a copy of your movies library? It looks like you're pretty well off with the amount of movies you have.

    Hi. Can I download PLEX and just use it locally without connecting to the internet so that I stream from my HD to my TV or any any device in my home network through my router? I am trying to come up with a SHTF option where no internect connectivity exists for an extended period of time at all in a home, with all the tv show and movie content ripped and stored on my local HD but with a NETFLIX like interface with a remote control instead of manually clicking on files with a mouse.

    do you use VUDU to get your movies? I have a ton of movies that I bought on VUDU but never downloaded them to my computer. Just wondering if I download them would I be able to see them on PLEX or will it download some sort of file format that PLEX won't be able to read?

    so if I have nothing to start, I'll probably need a NAS or dedicated PC to run as the server, connect it to my unmanaged switch, and have it stream the movies on there to my network correct? how do I get the movies? am I able to use the digital codes I have purchased from physical blu-rays? or do I have to rip my owned physical copies into digital copies?
