  • The Princess Of Lamballe - Marie Antoinette's Friend: Marie-Thérèse-Louise de Savoy-Carignan, princess of Lamballe, known as “Mademoiselle de Carignan” or “Madame de Lamballe”, is a princess of the House of Savoy. She was born in Turin on September 8, 1749 and died in Paris on September 3, 1792.
    In 1767, she married Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, Prince of Lamballe, son of the Duke of Penthièvre (himself the son of the Count of Toulouse, who was the legitimized son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan) and heir of a legitimized branch of the family royal of France. The Princess of Lamballe was widowed at the age of 19 in 1768.
    The princess of Lamballe became a close friend of the Dauphine Marie-Antoinette who, after having become queen, appointed Lamballe as surintendent of her house. Although the relationship between De Lamballe and Marie Antoinette was not always close, throughout her life De Lamballe remained completely devoted to the royal family, for which she eventually paid with her life.

    It must've pained Marie-Antoinette that The Princess of Lamballe had ESCAPED France and found sanctuary in England, only to be summoned back to France by the Queen herself when the Revolution seemed "quiet".
    A very sad end to a very gentle and dedicated woman. RIP

      Yes, it was quite the same situation for Madame DuBarry - in fact, I think she was a good friend of the Duchess of Devonshire and stayed with her in the UK.
      The Situation with DuBarry was your typical "witch-hunt" scenario; As DuBarry was rather happy to see the fall of Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette but, a servant of hers told the Committee of Social Justice that she was harbouring Monarchical ideologies.
      I think Madame DuBarry went to the scaffold pleading with the people for freedom and justice. Very sad.

    Her story gets me all the time. It shows how cruel people can get when hatred gets the upper hand. Today we lost our 18 year-old cousin Fedi. He died of leukemia and deliberately decided to end therapy and went into a hospice. Life is wonderful! We should cherish every single moment we have. Taking a life is horrible and inhumane. The princesse de Lamballe was punished for being loyal and empathic.

      I've always said this, the people who cried for Civil Liberties and Social Justice were the same maniacs who did crimes such as this in the name of the Republic.
      Along the same lines, one of the greatest crimes of the Revolution was allowing the son of Louis XVI to die from disease and neglect in the Temple Prison. Imagine, the Nation of France, literally neglecting a 10yr old boy to death simply because of his birth-right. !!!!! Rest in peace French Royals.

    • @andyroo9381
      @andyroo9381 2 роки тому +4

      @@Napp28 I know. I agree with you, entirely. What the new Republic did was really criminal. Staged trials, murdering, head on pikes like trophies and even the neglect of the royal children. I'm surprised that even one of the royal children were allowed to leave (I forget which royal daughter). It was all ugly. I wonder what the percentage is, of French population, would like to see a Constitutional Monarchy restored???

    • @Napp28
      @Napp28 2 роки тому +6

      @@andyroo9381 very well written my friend. As a person who studies history I often roll my eyes when people celebrate the French Republic as if it were founded on a clean slate.
      Another element which needs pointing out is that, the history we know and read probably is white washed from the reality. I'm sure the French Revolution was far more gruesome than any book or movie can do justice - it was literally a horror show whereby the Nation of France was overrun by blood thirsty maniacs!
      The irony of it all? King Louix XVI never signed a death warrant and when he had the opportunity to have troops clear a path for him at Varennes, he declined because the guards couldn't guarantee that the rebels might not get hurt/killed.
      The only member of the immediate Royal Family to survive was Madame Royale of France (Princess Marie-Therese Charlotte). However, her live ended up being very sad and she suffered from terrible post traumatic stress disorder. For over 3 years she languished in the temple prison, hearing her brothers cries, having no information about her mother and then having her Aunt taken away from her in the dead of night. She was traded for French Prisoners and made it to Austria around Christmas of 1795. As the French throne needed to follow a male line, I guess the Revolutionaries didn't think she stood to be too much of a threat. +Interesting side note; for a VERY brief period, she did become the Queen of France on the succession of her Husband the Duke of Angouleme, but he abdicated the Crown within less than an hour of receiving it.
      France is a very cultured and amazing country, the architecture, food, furniture, parks and monuments are wonderful. In my personal view, I think of all countries France would be amazing as a Constitutional Monarchy; to me (as a Canadian) a Republic is more of a 2nd class form of Government whereby the State is represented by an elected official who really only represents his or her voters.
      Here in Canada, our Monarchy has The Queen as the Head of State, she is represented by an appointed Governor General (who shares in her duties) and it gives the Nation a level of Government above politics. I think a Constitutional Monarchy would be much loved in countries like France and Russia ... but never in America.

      Sure, her murder was terrible. But how many parents had to bury their children because they had no money for food or medicine? How many siblings lost each other due to unhuman work condition? People don't risk their lives unless their lives get to a point where dying is preferable. I feel sorry for the children, for they are always innocent, but everybody else? Even if they had committed no direct crime, their lives were a small price to pay for building a fairer world

    It's incredible how people would try and mask as revolution and absolute necessity the cruelty and sheer vengefulness of their actions. It was not justice they were after, it was bloodthirsty revenge that quickly got out of hand. There is a short play by the Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler titled The Green Cockatoo.
    The Green Cockatoo was a small restaurant in revolutionary Paris that catered to slumming aristocrats who liked to play at being revolutionaries. It ends with the Paris revolutionary mob arriving with the head of the Princess on a pike. It had a sobering effect on the characters. A revolution is not a game. Real revolutionaries play for keeps. When I first read the play many years ago I had no idea who the Princess Lamballe was. But I got the idea. BTW, it's been suggested that the Women's March was not really spontaneous, but that secret groups were behind it. Conspiracy theory ? Probably, but a lot was going on in this period that probably escaped notice (among other reasons because it was secret) so it's not impossible. But proof is lacking. Very nice presentation and well illustrated.

      In a word, yes. One thing that made the nobles furious was that King Louis began taxing the land owned by the nobles, and to set a good example, he willingly started paying taxes on land owned by the Royal family. The level of mob violence in the French Revolution was uncommon. It was 180 degrees from the respect that the wealthy had taken for granted. There were times when the English royalty worried it would happen to them, the Peasant Rebellion of 1381 came close, but the peasants gave up costing the lives of their leaders after invading London. America's riots get pretty rowdy, but so far no one's head has been paraded around on a pike, much less dragging a beheaded body.
