Great Reviews But Poor Sales? Solium Infernum Struggles To Find A Strong Playerbase

  • I was a fan of the original Solium Infernum from Vic Davies. There was no doubt, that was a digital board game. And the new Solium Infernum follows very closely to the original. Was that a mistake? This is primarily a multiplayer focused game. The single player was planned to be better than the original, but somehow it falls short here. There is one major hurdle for the game in gaining new players...

    Hey there strategy gamers,
Just a disclaimer about this game and this video, Solium Infernum is more popular as a multiplayer game. The original was designed to be an asynchronous game to be played with your friends. The new Solium Infernum is great also great with friends, but the devs planned to make single player better in this one, which somewhat didn't pan out.
Note that the pvery positive reviews for this game may get people to purchase the game, but it then has soe pretty bad drop off... for obvious reasons.
I do feel the UI problem is the big one for new players. And of course, players coming into the game thinking it's like Civ. I hope League of Geeks is able to turn this around and get through their financial situation.
So what do you think about Solium Infernum? Have you played it?

I just started playing this recently. I found out about it through word of mouth (a friend raved about its excellent quality) and after playing the tutorial, I was really impressed. The gameplay, art and writing are all so good.
I'm sad to hear that the game and studio are not doing well financially. You know, this is quite a similar story to another game that came out recently, Stellaris Nexus (now called Nexus 5X). Both are digital board games with high complexity and depth, simultaneous turns, and very low player counts. In the case of Stellaris Nexus/Nexus 5X, many people blamed the marketing. But after seeing both games struggle to find players, it seems that people in general are not interested in this type of game. What a shame!

Honestly, I love this game better than Civilization (sorry, can't really help but compare). It's more focused, more dramatic, and really requires tough decisions. I love especially how the game solved the 'late-game slog' of Civilization where I found myself just cycling through end turn after end turn since I could already tell whether I won the game or not. And boy, Solium Infernum solved that problem. Even at the very last turn, every decision mattered. Prestige points were neck to neck when playing with experienced players. I can only pray strategy gamers give this game a try because it is really, really good.
I saw people quitting simply because of bad spawn, losing battles at the first five turns, etc. which for me shouldn't matter because it's quite easy to get back up. Sadly, some people just didn't invest time in learning the game. If they knew that getting level 4 on a power adds order slots leading to more actions, or spam pressing that tribute button each turn are resource money-making key strategies, then people would be in a good spot! Sadly, it's a niche game at the end of the day. I too wish LoG well. Looking forward to updates, balance changes, more features, etc.

I feel that. In my most recent game, I made a huge mistake and managed to get my starter legion and the praetor leading it killed in one fell (heh) swoop. That mistake cost me a place of power, and the only legion I have left is really a support one (0/8/0). However, not long afterwards, one of the other players played the Leviathan event, so there’s a distinct possibility that even with this support legion, I can take that PoP back. It’s an asynchronous match so, yet to still see where this goes 😄

What we need are some long in-depth advanced strategy guides from big youtubers.
People don't just want tips and tricks, they want to feel the depth of strategy.
Chess got more popular in my country after tv started sending strategy commentary.

Hi! Been playing the game myself and it’s a lot of fun! I’m even currently on my second asynchronous match. So far I’ve not been having many problems finding matches on multiplayer, and quite frankly the one time I opened a match room myself, if filled itself pretty quickly
That said, I am having trouble getting other people in my friend circle to give it a try. It’s one of those easy to understand but difficult to master games, which puts pressure on people who are not used to this sort of thing. Competitive strategy games aren’t their thing most of the time. Probably why they much prefer playing Helldivers XD
Here’s hoping that LoG’s can stay afloat, because they’re certainly up there on my list of favourite developers. Fingers crossed
P.S. If Armageddon Empires can get a remake with multiplayer this time, then that would be amazing X3

Hey thanks for this awesome content. It is absolutely a fact that those than continue to play Solium Infernum as those that have a regular crew to play it with. But as you said with a tonne of other games vying for people's attention in multiplayer. Some games just have a harder time. Anyway hope you'll find a crey to play it with. Perhaps a sale will bring in more people... maybe the community could do what the Imperator Rome community did :D

@FragsofWar assyic games are super common on Solium Infernum, but live games are a pain in the ass to get started.
      Still a great game, though

@@christracey5813 I played my first sessional match yesterday and I have some thoughts. It was good, but the timer between turns was just not generous at all. I generally look at the turn resolve play-by just to see what is going on and what order, but the clock is still ticking while it’s doing that, so in practice I only have like a minute or less on some turns to submit orders, which is hectic af. Not ideal for me XD

The main problem with the game in my opinion is that it only really appeals to ppl with gaming friends to play with. It doesnt have a matchmaking system to find opponents for u and the AI is so bad that playing against it is nothing more than a giant waste of time.

Didn't they release an update finally introducing several AI difficulties in april? Or AI is still bad even after the patch?

totally agree, like you said i saw plenty of channel presenting it like Civ in hell, personnally i think this didn't serve the game well, even the turn based system is quite different from it.
