  • Adam Lambert gives a brilliant performance of "Come to Me, Bend to Me" from "Brigadoon." There's no video, but we include some older photos of Adam that you may not have seen.
The performance is from Houston's Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) in 2004 - so Adam was about 22 years old. Amazingly, this is from a "live" stage performance, not a studio recording with multiple takes. For information about current TUTS programming, visit www.tuts.com/
Adam has made it very clear that this is not the type of recording he wants to make - but it sure proves that he's the best singer of this year's American Idol contestants. The wonderful phrase at 3:23 lingers on for over 20 seconds without a breath, effortlessly...
"Brigadoon" is a musical with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe that debuted on Broadway in 1947. It tells the story of a mysterious Scottish village that appears for only one day every hundred years, though to the villagers, the passing of each century seems no longer than one night. The enchantment is viewed by them as a blessing rather than a curse, for it saved the village from destruction. According to their covenant with God, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave, or the enchantment will be broken and the site and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever. Two American tourists, lost in the Scottish Highlands, stumble upon the village just as a wedding is about to be celebrated, and their arrival has serious implications for the village's inhabitants.

    Here are the lyrics:
Because they told me I can't behold ye
    till weddin' music starts playin';
To ease my longin' there's nothin' wrong in
me standin' out here an' sayin':
Come to me, bend to me, kiss me good day!
Darlin', my darlin', 'tis all I can say,
Jus' come to me, bend to me, kiss me good day!
Gie me your lips an' don't take them away.
Come, dearie, near me so ye can hear me,
I have to whisper this softly.
For though I'm burnin' to shout my yearnin', the words come tiptoein' off me.

About 55 years ago I was in an amateur production of Brigadoon, where I met my late husband. I was Bonnie Jean and he was Charlie. I hope I don't sound disloyal when I say Adam Lambert's version of Come To Me, Bend To Me is unbeatable! Sheer perfection, and every time I hear it, I'm in tears.

Yep, he received his Actor's Equity card for this 2004 performance. Several members of the Houston cast have written me to confirm that this was him and talked about how the entire cast would stop everything backstage to hear him sing this song.
Even more convincingly, this video has appeared on many hollywood websites and blogs and been viewed almost 600,000 times. If this were not Adam, someone would have written to correct me by now.

This brought me to tears. This song proves how he is such a star: at 22, he not only had the voice, the control, the command over his voice - but he had incredibly mature musicianship and artistry for his age. There are people who can sing, maybe even sing in different genres - but his blend of intonation, phrasing, control, artistry, musicianship - as well as his ability to wring every last bit of emotion from every note - truly set him apart.

I first heard this when Adam was still a contestant on American Idol - I'm a (former) Broadway tenor - well, I'm still a tenor, but no longer professionally - and pretty hard to please. PLUS, I'm in my sixties and quite an old fogie! But Adam can do anything as far as I'm concerned! This is perhaps the most beautiful rendition of "Come to Me, Bend to Me" that I've ever heard; his breath control, his intonation, his range - glorious! And even as the old fart that I am, when Adam brought his first tour to the Ryman in Nashville, I actually found myself standing ON the chair seat, screaming and dancing!! Wow - what a performer, in every genre!!

I always come back to this song when I feel stressed and need something to purify my spirit. It is just so perfect. In a world of imperfections, this performance, this singer, this interpretation is perfect. We are so used to settling for less than perfect, and it is so rare, almost impossible to find, that when actual perfection comes along, it is hard to believe it's real. I'm so glad this video exists, because it's actual proof that yes, perfection is real and Adam Lambert is a perfect singer.

I keep coming back to hear this, again and again. It never fails to move me. As much as I enjoy his new album, Trespassing, and wish him enormous success with it. And as much as I loved For Your Entertainment, and its accoustic EP, and was thrilled by the GlamNation Tour - twice :) I come back to this, and can't help thinking - the musical theater really missed out when they didn't acknowledge what they had - they lost a real star when Adam decided to express his artistry in recording pop.

He can be an opera singer with his voice and the tone that he's singing. This is exactly what everyone talks about that Adam's range, vocabilty, that he can sing anything he want. There aren't a lot male singers that could do things like he does. This is unbelievable!! no words to explain.

Beyond praise, utterly angelic -- the loveliest rendition of Charlie Dalrymple's ballad I've ever heard. Would love to have seen him do this, and he must have soared in "Come Home With Bonnie Jean." Lerner and Loewe would surely approve. Thanks ever so much for posting this gem.

I just finished watching the movie Brigadoon. I watched it all the way through just to hear this song and it wasn't there!! Was this song only in the play but not the movie?? Maybe they had no one who could do it justice - at least not like Adam could.

Terreyn .. The same thing happened to me the other day .. I watched the movie all the way through but this song was not in it .. I thought I had dozed off or something but my husband said he didn't hear it either!! I can't imagine why they removed it ... seems strange to me!! I just checked Amazon movies & apparently the song was cut from the movie because it was sung by an unknown who outsang Gene Kelly .. that is a shame!! Now I know why it wasn't in the movie .. only the stage play!!

@@tatubert8210 thank you! I didn't hear the song in the movie and I couldn't understand why. Gene Kelly's massive ego is the answer. There was a version for TV with Robert Goulet as the lead. The song was in that. I don't remember the name of the singer but he was great. Guess Robert Goulet was sure of himself and didn't need reassuring.

How? could there be 52 haters?????? Adam is AMAZING. I would love to hear him record some classical arias just because he can and he has the training. 'Come to me, Bend to Me' is as close to a classical performance that I could find on UA-cam. I've seen him live with the American Idol tour and most recently with Queen. I will go out of my way to see him live anytime he's within striking distance of where I live. I am a professional singer/teacher and unequivocally state he has prodigious technical ability (there have been naysayers re his AI performances...'screaming'....NOT.....)....nothing short of amazing, superb technique in all genres.....combined with his natural showmanship and down to earth personality is a recipe for super stardom!!!!! I would LOVE to see him on Broadway!!!
