An Afternoon at Chatham; Stopping & Express Trains - Metro Trains Melbourne

  • In this video we spend an afternoon at Chatham, a small station on the Belgrave/Lilydale lines in Melbourne's east. Filmed between 3pm - 4:30pm we see various stopping, express and not-in-service X'trapolis trains passing through the station just before the height of the afternoon peak. We even see some crosses with express trains overtaking stopping all stations trains.
Chatham opened in 1927 with the station building being very similar in appearance to Middle Footscray on the Sunbury line which opened the same year. The smaller (and rather narrow) third platform was built in 1971 when triplication of the line was extended from Camberwell to Box Hill.
In 2018-19 Chatham was the least used station on the Lilydale line; being situated in close proximity to neighboring stations at Canterbury and Surrey Hills.

I really like how the Lilydale and belgrave lines have so many express trains, just wish the three tracks went to Ringwood not just Box Hill; great video BTW.

Thanks! Unfortunately the latest round of grade separations make extending the third track beyond Blackburn pretty much impossible, but I'm not 100% convinced it's needed anyway seeing Nunawading and Mitcham stations are among the busiest stations on the line; I see no point in having express trains skip these stations.

I think that there are alot of other projects that need being done more than having three tracks from Blackburn, especially seeing as both the mentioned lines STILL have single track sections. And I agree that having express trains skiping these stations wouldnt be ideal. For me having three tracks comes under the 'yeah that would be pretty cool' category than an actual need. Had diesel services never stopped going to Warburton this ideas usefullness would be much greater. Its kinda funny having a line that would be so good at having long distance trains run on it but without the long distance line to match. In away its a shame that the expected growth out those ways never came and that the Warburton line was never saved. IMO its the kind of line that if it hadnt stopped then and had instead been upgraded it would still be around but now that its gone it will never return. We do live in hope for Coldstream and Yarra Glen though as council is thinking about how to develop both areas up a bit. Who knows we may even see what happened to Mernda happen to Yarra Glen but as they say "I wouldnt hold my breath"

@@VictorianTransportSpotter I wouldn't indeed hold your breath for too much growth for Yarra Glen and Coldstream. You might get the odd rezoning and subdivision here and there but nothing too drastic and sprawling like we've seen elsewhere in Melbourne. Melbourne's urban growth boundary stops at Lilydale with a lot of the land north towards Coldstream and Yarra Glen in the green wedge zone; designed to preserve the non-urban landscape for agriculture and other activities. I'd be very surprised if the land was rezoned for residential purposes, especially with a lot of land within the urban growth boundary around other parts of Melbourne.
IMO duplication of the line from Mooroolbark & Lilydale is a must and I'm surprised it's not being done in conjunction with the grade separation works as it would enable more frequent and reliable services to run up to Lilydale; a significant urban area and gateway to the Yarra Valley. Duplicating to Belgrave might be in the too hard basket with a lot of earthworks and tree removals required.

@@ThebusofdoomFSX There have been talks of rezoning land out that way but I dont think development will ever go out past Yering much. At a council meeting early this year council were discussing Coldstream in particular and expressed their wishes to allow a few more estates and upgrade main street to make it a bit more pleasent (lipstick on a pig?).This seems less and less possible after what happened last year. Last year 176ha of land was put up for sale spruiked as a place for housing and a large hotel. Upon seeing that the land they want to oneday extend their swerage plant onto being jeopradised YVW aquired it. I know I have expressed interest in Coldstream being developed but I am glad that all the land there wont be. A little bit of development between the railway line and Maroondah Highway would be acceptable but having the whole lot developed would be too much imo. But seeing as the site has an environmental protection overlay (i dont know how recent that is, it may not have been there when the housing was spruiked) Coldstream will be stuck the way it is for some time. (the site is 535-537 Maroondah Highway if you want to look it up on Vic Plan) Rezoning has occured around the IGA in Coldstream and the existing estate is to be extended around said IGA. (multi use zoning) Development should head mostly East if anything. Between Killara rd and Ingram. If Yarra Valley strawberrys on Killara road ever sold up that land would be more easily developed than the aforementioned one as it has no overlay but is still Green Wedge. It isnt a must and is more just something that residents are fighting for and would be interesting to see. I personally despise Coldstream its not a very nice place to be and with the Constant road noise it isnt quiet.
As for duplication I am not surprised they arent doing it now, the level crossing removal project at Lilydale and Mooroolbark finishes in 2022 when the government will be in the middle of an election campaign, standing at lilydale to open a new station AND promise duplication if relected in the one hit will be sure to win some votes and will have been the plan all along. As for Belgrave who knows what will come out of it, it will be difficult to do with out drastically changing the bushy look of the line but they look as though have enough land to do it (even enough to have a bike trail following the line) but it will take a lot of effort, we will just have to wait and see what the next election will hold.

Thanks! I like Chatham, it's a nice quiet station and the staggered third platform gives better views of the surrounding rail corridor.

One reason why Chatham was not used more was that many trains didn't stop there and prior to myki I had troubles getting tickets.
I used the train each day to get to Uni. And Chatham was my closest station. But I sometimes had trouble getting a ticket and I occasionally got overcarried when a train that should have stopped didn't. The circular problem. Poor service leads to poor patronage leads to poor service.....

Ah Chatham station! How you pronounce it is the litmus test of whether you are educated or not. "ChaT-Ham" = Educated. "ChaTTHHam" = Uneducated. I grew up around Chatham station in the 90s and could always tell if someone was from the outer suburbs on how they pronounced this station. Of course today this is totally different.
