Ron, Love your vids. As a contractor with an excavator and always using 811 out here by law in CA, but little still confused on that location size and pressure on that gas line, but, suggest you hold off until located as it could have taken that whole area out under certain conditions. Respectfully, Always determine exactly where that line is BEFORE you start on a task like that. It's on you folks if you hit it. Again not sure of all the details but seemed sketchy going for it as perceived from here. Be safe. Take care. All the best.

Jeff DeBernardi It may not have been easily heard in the video so I will clarify the best I can. The gas line had been marked prior to the start of the job. The markings apparently got lost during the work they were doing. At one point the on-site supervisor tells me that they have the marking company coming out to re-mark the gas line. The on-site supervisor knew the approximate location of the gas line....it was very close to the roadway. If you watch the video again, you can hear the supervisor telling the operator to keep the bucket down the bank in order for him to stay away from the line. Then towards the end of the video you can catch a glimpse of a man re-marking the line close to the road. I appreciate your respectful response. Thank you and God bless.

the problem with finding a gas or electric line before you dig is, they dont always find the line when they mark it.
you really dont know where it us untll you dig it up.
you just have to dig easy untll you find it.
really old metal lines are gone. the gas travels through tunnel made by the compacted soil. there is no metal left to detect.
i personally watched a guy locating and marking a buried line with a detector. he lost the line halfway. went to the end of the line and worked back to where he lost it. he lost it again.
watched him go back and forth and sideways looking for the middle of the line.
      never found it.
he stood in the middle, lined himself up with his last mark from the beginning and his last mark from the end, and marked the ground indicating the line was there.
he had no idea where the line was, he guessed.

That is the reason why he should not go on tv, they only show the more entertaining things when stuff goes wrong. or having the crew of the work team adlib or script in drama just to get ratings.

I remember when I was helping an ex girlfriend move my transmission went out on me and I had to walk to the nearest town to find a tow truck. I didn't know anyone there so I just trusted my gut and called the one that said "we don't charge an arm and a leg, we just want your tows." Turns out they told the truth and I recommended them to anyone who would listen for the next few years. I think it's a safe bet you have the same effect on your customers.

Ron I just watched your Deep Doo Doo video. I was very impressed for a couple of reasons. The main reason I was really impressed was because of your professionalism. It was nice to see no drama built into the video. In my opinion just the recovery is drama enough. I stopped watching TV shows like Deadliest Catch, the towing shows, and Gold Rush. The attitudes in those shows are full of disrespect for others and nasty language, which makes me disgusted. So thank you. Also, I enjoyed seeing the computerization on the tow truck control panel and your explanation of what you were doing and why. Excellent job.

Awesome job Ron and the Midwest crew!! We sure could have used you guys on a technical/heavy rescue call several years back. An operator in a very large Cat excavator rolled down a cliff around 150’ at least and the machine was upside down and pinning him. He was halfway ejected out of the cab and his leg was badly pinned. We had the two local heavy tow outfits respond and they were not too impressive to say the least. As head Paramedic on the incident I made the call to amputate, we already had a surgeon coming just in case. He arrived and agreed with me and him and I proceeded to amputate the guy’s leg right above the knee to free him. Good thing we did as he also had internal bleeding just as I suspected and needed to get into the operating room reallly fast and I wasn’t willing to waste anymore time trying to extricate him with his leg. Thankfully he lived, made a full recovery, and got fitted for a state of the art prosthesis and was able to return to work operating. I have always wondered if we could have saved his leg if we had a top notch crew with top notch equipment like y’all do. Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!!

So happy to see you with extra help, with Talon and Mike, and Beast Jr., if something untoward happened. I am always astounded by the shear power of that rotator. It reminds me of a job I did early in my career where we had a machine like that buried even deeper. Four other towing companies turned it down, But my dad and I took our war surplus Sterling out and with the help of two cats, which we use as deadmans, got it out. My dad was a master with the use of snatch blocks. We had, as I remember, about 2500 feet of 7/8th cable so that was never any problem. But the real kicker was the three speed power tower we had. You could make that winch pull so hard and slow that you could count the strands on the cable as they went by where you were standing.

Good morning Ron I have not spoken to you for a while but I watch a lot of your recovery jobs plus a few others but I must admit you are the best heavy recovery operator that I watch on here because to me you are the only recovery operator that does these recovery jobs properly. I dont know if you remember I wrote to you a few times in the past & I have been doing heavy recovery work in the UK for around 50years having done several jobs like you do but in those days we did not have such luxury as a rotator. But now I am getting very old & should be retired, I have decided to concentrate on doing just site work jobs like this one & some times a lot worse being almost sunk out of site in quarries & lakes & pits etc aswell as very soft boggy ground. A while ago I imported a large Caterpiller D8 Dozer from America with a big Hyster winch on the back that has a single line pulling power of 47.5 tons of pulling power but to be able to get that massive amount of pulling power iI needed to have better anchorage so we built 2 big hydraulic anchors on the back & now it moves mountains. plus I have a Cat D6 & other machines built especialy for site recovery infact i have recently bought a winch with a 100 ton pulling power on a single line but i have not mounted it on a chassis yet. Regards & best wishes God bless you all . Brian Mayhead.

Once helped recover a 12and1/2 ton Bucryus Erie crawler crane that had been dumped in the water.Tip of the boom was showing above water but nothing else.Man held his breath long enough to hook a heavy chain to the tow hook at center front. Then we used a D8H bulldozer that had a rear winch pulled the crane up the ramp. Also helped recover a D7F bulldozer that was stuck up to the top of the tracks.Problem was we had to tow the machine backwards, and there were three ripper teeth mounted to the back of the blade.Took three D7Fs pulling together, plus we had get an air compressor to blow through a pipe under the stuck machine,to help break the suction of the mud on the belly of the stuck machine.Quite a lot of noise and work but we finally got him out.Fun times.

During my military days using a M88 A2 to pull a buried tank up to dry land. Yes the "ARK" was there as well. During the pull one of the cables snapped like a limb. As it was flying thru the air the driver of the M88 saw what about to happened and jumped out of the M88 just in time. The cable flung its self around 40,000 volt line and wrapped twice. The M88 became a live wire its self.... Sparks, Ark's and the noise was unreal for a young man watching it unfold. It happened so quick in my mind. No one was hurt which was a blessing.

And they're there for a reason, the amount of incidents in alarmingly high. Up where I take it, it's 5 lanes wide with an express running along with it made of 3 lanes. And they are busy, all day long! Funny you'd mention the show about the 401, didn't know the show was aired in the U.S.

i like your truck. guys here in baltic states in Estonia are really missing this kind of truck. a few years back we had a truck with a load of liquid natural gas slide off the road into a muddy ditch. but no company has a heavy wrecker that can handle a fully loaded triple axel tanker trailer and tractor unit. and those tankers are like thermoses but the outer layer was damaged so it wasnt insulated anymore and the gas inside started expanding as it heated up. the worst thing was the safety blow off valves were stuck closed some how. so they had to ask help from our defence forces to come and use their heavy 70ton wreckers to get the truck out.

    Keep up the great work

A couple of years back one of the operators where I worked sunk a 60 ton excavator in a peat moor kinda terrain here in the Netherlands.. Quick thinking with chains on thick trees prevented it from going under all the way.. It stopped sinking but not before half the cabin disappeared below the surface.. Seeing this we sure could have used you in that situation.. It took 2 other excavators a large crane and a hole lot of gear to get the machine out eventually we managed but it took us 2 days.. Appreciate the video.. brought back memories for me haha Cheers Ron..

The difference is a little thing called MAINTENANCE"! If you'll look closely at all of Ron's equipment you can tell it is well cared for and that can make or break you or even more, keep you from getting hurt or killed. The ONLY thing Ron can't control are IDIOTS that pay no attention to wreckers, tow trucks or rotators and their drivers....one of the most hazardous jobs in the country.

I've watched quite a few of your videos. I can appreciate the way you work thinking out the problem and working out your solutions.I also like your emphasis on safety which really showed through in this video. Your workplace is more hazardous than mine was, I'm now retired, but mine was hazardous enough and we had to be on the ball all the time. I like how you wok as a team and get the job done smoothly. It makes it much safer that way. I've seen Talon in a few videos. He picks things up quickly. Also like the way you work with the various agencies and your customers.Other than that I like the toys. My son runs a Western Star tractor mostly moving shipping containers from the port and delivering trailer loads of groceries to regional supermarkets in small country towns. For a while he ran transcontinental road trains between Sydney and Perth in Australia. I traveled with him a couple of times. Its hard highly skilled work totally unlike driving a car. I just wish a lot of car drivers understood that.A personal note on the gas line. In Australia they have a service where you can access a map showing the utilities coming into your property. I used that when doing some excavation in my front yard and was extra careful around where the phone line was supposed to be buried. Problem was I happily dug away on the other side of the yard where nothing was supposed to be and you guessed it put the excavator bucket straight through the phone line. It turned out that the phone line originally came in overhead but underground conduit had already been installed ready to run it underground when the came through the found they couldn't connect it to the junction in the street so laid new conduit and connected to the junction further down the street but never updated their maps. Luckily I saw able to repair the cables and put a sleeve over the broken conduit.
