These are awesome! And that kit...ok, here it goes:
Ive been planning to update my wife’s wedding ring one of these Christmases - we got married 12/21 and had a Christmas honeymoon. When we got engaged I spent the little savings I had on her engagement ring and didn’t have enough to buy a nice wedding ring to pair. So she’s wearing a $18 CZ band I got from amazon and I’m wearing a $8 Walmart wedding band, but we don’t care.
We’ve been married five years now, added three to the family and so, if you can do the math, I still don’t have the money to buy her an updated wedding ring! Haha. So I honestly don’t have a need for the boxes right now.
However, over the past two years I’ve been renovating our old house and so I’ve really gotten into building which has now led me into woodworking. Stumbling onto channels like y’all’s and listening to Nick Offerman, I’ve been wanting to use more hand tools and have already asked for a Katz-Moses dovetail jig for Christmas...but an entire kit would be siiiiick. That way, when I can afford a nicer ring I can build her a box to go with it! So I am shamelessly asking for the kit and not the boxes, but it’s worth a shot!
Anyways, keep up the awesome work and I will continue to drool in jealousy over yalls work as I try to do the same.
Thanks for making the trip out Jonathan, it was a very fun time.
Garrett, thank you for sharing. Great story, with three kids I'd imagine it would be hard to get the money together.
@@JGMc23 For Mike's and my sake, as Rush fans, I/we can only hope that you didn't miss the opportunity to play 2112 at your 12/21 wedding. :)
my best friend and coworker is leaving for another job soon, and I'm going to miss her immensely - even more you can possibly imagine. Years ago when we first became friends, she told me about her business dream of designing ring boxes, similar to this. I'd love to be able to give her a beautiful box as a gift (including something very special inside) to remember me by and to show her what she means to me. I think the surprise of the actual box and at my memory of her goal would really mean a lot to her and hopefully illustrate exactly how I feel about her.
great video guys!
BTW - "Fade into You" by Mazzy Star and "Ophelia" by Lumineers are probably the 2 songs that remind me the most of her. Different feelings involved with each...
Thank you for sharing. Both songs are great choices.
Very nice little boxes. Perfect as a small gift in themselves.
Thank you very much.
My wife and I got married when we were 20 and have been married for 39 years. The song that epitomizes our relationship is Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. I have never had any luck getting a DJ to play the song at any parties we've been to, but in January our youngest daughter will be getting married and it's definitely going to be on the play list with a special introduction from me.
Thats totally cool. I like the edgier feel, great song. Best of luck with your daughters wedding.
@@MikeFarrington Thanks Mike.
I met the most amazing woman I have ever met on Feb 17, 2018. She has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. (And not in some honeymoon stage type way) She has encouraged me in so many ways and even helped me to change my lifestyle. Since that time, I have become far healthier and even off any medication needed. I want to ask her to marry me on Feb. 17, 2019 and one of those boxes would be an amazing presentation! Either way, they are awesome and I love to watch your work!
Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you have a good plan.
My wife and I have been married 4 years. Our first dance was Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling in Love. Meant to be!!
Thank you for sharing. Its a great song.
I have 2 stories so I will start with the song story. I married my wife in 1989 and we have 4 wonderful children. She passed away in 1986. Songs like Holes in the Floor of Heaven didn't click with me. One day, I heard Ray Stevens' song When the Kids Are Gone (one of his typically silly songs) and just broke down crying. It's funny what triggers our emotions.
I can relate.
Always love wooden ring box designs. Made one myself in the form of a necklace box to make it a surprise about 7 months ago when I proposed. Fun fact - my wife walked down the aisle to Can't Help Falling in Love. :)
Its such a great song, and a great selection for walking down the aisle. Oh and congratulations!
Thanks Mike!
Awesome. We are at 49 years this December.
Thats great, congratulations.
My wife and I have been married for 23 years. We met during graduate school. We have 6 children (3 girls and 3 boys)--two have graduated from HS and moved out. I have gotten into woodworking over the past several years and really enjoy it! I love your videos. It is always a little discouraging and inspiring watching a professional. Discouraging in that I see how rudimentary my skills are, but inspiring to see what you can do and create! With busy work schedules and even busier parenting duties, my wife and I have very little time alone. I would love one of your ring boxes to give to my wife for our 25th anniversary, along with a ring! Thanks for making such great videos!
Thank you for sharing. Never be discouraged, woodworking is a long journey and thats the point.
For dealing with small magnets a pair of stainless tweezers and a dry-erase marker come in handy. Mark the face of each magnet as you remove it from the stack to help keep them aligned. Or if you'd rather deal with cleaning solvents than the dry-erase marker dust, substitute a sharpie.
Good tips. Thank you very much.
You telling me a Cali boy can't skateboard. Good job on the boxes mike
Ha! Thank you Robert. Great to hear from you, funny how the little things that young guys do become harder as the years go by.
Our first song was Kisses sweeter than wine by Pete Seeger. That was almost 35 years ago. Our wedding song was by Peter, Paul and Mary, There is Love.
Two great songs. My dad used to play There is Love when I was a kid.
i met my wife in 1981 and we've been married 34 years. The song that reminds me of her (and her ringtone on my phone) is "I Only Want to Be With You" by the Bay City Rollers. Corny, I know. We met on the CB radio when that was a thing in the late 70s and early 80s. You've inspired me to try my hand at building one of these boxes as a gift for our 35th anniversary coming up in May. Thanks for your great videos.
Great story Bill, thank you for sharing. Let me know how your box turns out.
Not sure if there are any left! But I’ve been in a relationship for 9 months. I met her at church and she’s an amazing human. This would be an awesome way to propose.
Thank you very much, unfortunately, they are all gone.
Cool little boxes, love the use of the magnets. Song recommendation is cool, for me and my Mrs. (Married for 26 years now) Depeche Mode, Somebody, give it a listen if you're not familiar with it.
Thank you. That is a really cool song for sure.
Great idea for Christmas gifts!
Thank you.
45 years this year 2022. “Love is a Many Splendor Thing”. Very interesting video and well presented. I am thinking I should learn to do hand cut dovetails. Thanks for sharing. Bob & Connie Hempstead in Shoreview, Minnesota.
Beck-Gamma Ray. My wife is tiny and she’s got some spunk so this song always reminds me of her. I picture her dancing like a California girl to this song, even though she’s a southern girl.
Great vid Mike, my brother and I are going to try something like this.
Totally great song. I'm a big Beck fan. Thank you, good luck.
My wife and I got married on October 28, 2017 a year prior to this upload. I made a shell for the bland ring box that came with the ring. The song that always reminds me of my love for her is Brother by Needtobreathe. I switched the word brother for her name and sang it for her one night in the car. We had somebody play the piano version of it when we walked down the isle.
Congratulations. I love the idea of switching a word or two in a song to make it fit your situation. Thank you for sharing.
Very great and beautiful work
Thank you.
Hungrey like the wolf by Duran Duran. We just had our 33rd anniversary
Nice, thats a great song, thanks for sharing.
As always, great educational piece. My son, You''ve Made Me So very Happy by blood sweat and tears
Thank you Carl. Good tune.
Wet Wet Wet's Love is All Around - 14 years as of Oct 9th!
Thats a very cool song. Congratulations! For me 14 years has flown by.
Heck yes. 6 kids along the way and 4 moves. It hasn't been slow. @@MikeFarrington
Fantastic collaboration with Katz - Moses! Love both your channels and all of your videos.
Thank you very much.
Mike - Congratulations to both of you. My wife and I were married the first time, Oct 24, 1978. We share the 28th with you as we were remarried on Oct 28, 2013. I guess we took some time in between to grown up a bit. Beautiful little boxes.
Thank you, and great story, thats really neat you guys were able to come back together.
Loved the video and boxes. congrats for your 14 years together, unfortunately I am far too old to need one of those boxes and as I only share my house with my cat I am not going to marry it, it thinks it is the boss already.
I chuckled as I read your comment, thank you for sharing.
I think you should be given one of the boxes to use for holding cat treats. Marriages break up, but the love between a pet and its "owner" never fades.
@@stephanvg You haven't seen the size of my cats treats jar, it is 12" x 18" and rarely less than half full. One of those boxes would be lost inside it.
Baby Blue Eyes by A Rocket to the Moon reminds me of my wife everytime I hear it. Great videos, Mike. I value the wisdom you bring to woodworking.
Great song. Thank you.
We share the same song. We danced to that song at our wedding this past June.
Thank you.
I learn something useful from every one of your videos. Thanks very much!
Thanks Jay.
Working small has many challenges but as usual you make it look easy! Such simple little boxes have a big presence. Well done!
Thank you very much. Small is a nice change of pace from the normal cabinet type project.
Sweet video Mike, keep up the great work.
Thank you Barney, will do.
I love watching both of you guys at work but I have to give Mike the award for best documentary 🤣 I like the behind the scenes Mike had in this video.
Congrats on your 14yrs!!! Just an FYI my wife and I have been together for 8yrs (married for 3yrs) and our song is Unbelievable by Alicia Keys ft. Drake.
Thank you, and congratulations on 3 and 8. Great song for sure.
Your videos are both, very informative and very addicting to watch. I have literally been going through every video you've uploaded. Please continue to create videos of your amazing talent!
Thank you very much, will do.
Me and my wife have been married for 2 years and together for 10 I was never able to buy her a real ring she is wearing a cheap Sterling one now and I would love an opportunity to give her a real ring in the near future in one of your finely crafted boxes!
Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic builds!
Thank you Dennis.
Great video and the give away is very cool for the new couples. My wife and I have have been married since 2012. We meet in 2010 and very quickly the realization was there she is the one. It was awhile dating the song " Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars was out so that was our song to each other. Enjoyed the fine craftsmanship on the ring boxes. I have a project planned after our move to build her a one of kind jewelry box. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. Thats a fun song, and congratulations to you two.
I am married for 10 years and only now I'm able to provide a good pair of rings for me and my wife. We built our life instead of spending with wedding party or fancy honey moon.
Long story short, we're both from small cities and met while trying to make a living on the but town.
Now we have two kids , a nice apartment and life is going pretty good at last. I'm a small business owner and even going broke once my my wife never left my side and always supports my business decisions. We had our fist child back in 2011 and now, after 5 years fighting depression and anxiety, she decided it was time to stop her treatment and have our second child. Its a girl and she's due in March and depression is finally under control.
So my lady is getting a fancy ring anyway, and if don't get your special box I will probably try it on my own, but here you have it. Were finally wining. I'm very lucky to have a girl like her.
If you got this far, thanks for reading my story.
Thank you for sharing. The life of a small business owner takes a special and understanding partner. I am lucky like you in that my wife is very supportive. Without her, I would have closed up shop and probably been working at a drive thru.
Lovely project and congratulations on 14 years of marriage. Honestly, I'm not sure how you made it 14 years with a person who eats pizza with a fork & knife :)
Haha! Fortunately, I am a brave dude.
Thanks for all the great content!
I’ve done the same things with my day to days tools and I wouldn’t go back to the old chaos.
Thank you.
Asa always mike, brilliant video, explanation and instruction... loving the boardroom!!!!!
Jimmy joiner
Thank you very much Jimmy.
Another fine mess you've got me into Mike now I have to buy my wife of 43 years another ring. First class video yet again fabulous work from you
and Jonathan. Greetings from your Scottish friends.
Thank you. Sorry for the mess. I love Scotland.
The song that comes to my mind is the same, only difference is 50 or so years , and the band is Twenty One Pilots. These remakes aren't always good, but you should check this one out :)
Thank you. I'll give that one a listen.
Great video, I have always enjoyed making small projects like jewelry boxes, ring boxes, etc...
My song is Randy Travis's "Are We In Trouble Now". It came out around the same time we got engaged and when we got married later that year it was played at our wedding. Going on 22 years!
Congratulations on 22! Making small items is a lot of fun. Great song.
No significant other as of yet so I guess Looking for love by Whitesnake is a perrfect fit :P . I enjoyed this one a lot! Can't wait for the longboard video!
Thats a great song. The longboard video will be out soon!
I met my girlfriend 2 years ago while we were in secondary school (british equivalent of high school) and now we're at the same collage still happily together. She has made these 2 years the best two years of my life and I hope to spend many more with her, if shes crazy enough to put up with me that long. We don't intend on getting married any time soon but this box would be perfect for a ring I got her for Christmas and the box would make it all that much more special
Thank you for sharing.
Those boxes look great! This year for Christmas I'm making the gf a wooden ring as sort of a promise ring, but with way more meaning than what they traditionally represent. I'm sure there are much more qualified men here with much better stories than mine, but a handmade wooden ring inside a handmade wooden box sounds perfect. I'll definitely be giving her a ring in your exact box one way or another. Keep up the great videos, they're great for binge watching
Thank you Chris. Good luck with the ring build. That will be a very special gift.
My sappy love story is, I met my girlfriend while deployed. While actually in Qatar, she asked me to lunch twice, and we hit it off really well. From there we spent 3 months together, and have since taken a trip to Costa Rica together and life has been good. - As always Mike, great video! Thank you for sharing
Thats great to hear, thank you for sharing.
Not really a sappy love story, but xmas is coming up and the wife would love it!
Thank you.
Great video Mike. I like the differences in how you and Jonathon approached the editing of your videos.
Thank you. Jonathan puts out some very well produced videos. It was very neat to have him in the shop, I learned a lot about cameras, filming, etc.
David Bowie - Modern Love. We are both Bowie fans.
Great song for sure.
These boxes are beautiful Mike!! That's a great tip using a router with a flush trim bit to clean up the dovetails. Would've never thought of that!
Thank you. Yup, the router cuts a super clean line, and its really fast.
Nice work Mike! I love the router clean up on the dovetails!!
Thank you Donny, the router trick is a great time saver.
Perfect work as always.
Thank you.
These are awesome, the boxes came out beautiful. Great videos and tips as usual, please keep them coming. I love the collaboration, and i especially enjoy the joint of the week. If I win the dovetail starter kit, the first thing I would do, is build my wife a box. Recently, my grandfather left me a set of pearls, that my wife doesn't know about. I plan to make them into earings and a hand made box, half as beautiful as the ones you guys made, would definitely make the surprise extra special.
Thank you, good luck.
@@MikeFarrington thank you. I'll need it. I'm just starting out with woodworking, but love it.
As ever fantastic!
Thank you.
Hey Mike, Great video! I want to start off by saying I really like how much time, effort, and energy you put into all of your work. It is truly inspiring.
So here's my story, My girlfriend and I met in college 3 years ago. She was/ is a year behind me and she currently is still studying to become a nurse In May. We have spoken about getting married plenty of times and I just recently have thought of the perfect idea for a proposal. After her graduation ceremony I will pop the question at dinner in with her entire family there. We are both pretty young (23) but we also both know that we don't want to spend our lives with anyone else. I have already gotten the ring and now I just need a sentimental box to present the ring in. This would be amazing if I could give her something that she and I could use and admire for the rest of our lives. Also, I usually always listen to the song that you recommend in your videos I think that it’s pretty neat that you do that for the viewers.
Anyways, I hope that you keep making awesome videos and even better music recommendations
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity Mike!
I love it! Thank you for sharing. I was 21 when I met my wife, we were friends for a long time before we got together, but I always knew there was something between us. I share a song as a way of showing a little about me. Thank you for listening to them. Hopefully you have liked one or two.
@@MikeFarrington Hey Mike thanks for such a quick response. I have like most of the songs you have recommended, they are all pretty great in there own way. I forgot to mention in my comment " our " song as a couple is Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
@@richardmahoney8137 Thank you, Landslide is a very good song.
Send me an email via my website if you'd like a box.
I'll be following! Great video as usual
Thank you.
Awesome video Mike. I have really enjoyed your builds.
Can't Help Falling In Love was my wife and I's first dance, although we chose the Ingrid Michaelson cover.
Thank you very much. Great song, and I really like Ingrid's version. She did that song justice.
My wife and I met swing dancing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and our Wedding First Dance was Bei Mir Bist During Schön.
Great story, thank you for sharing.
Love the boxes! Too bad this video wasn't in August, I (surprised) proposed to my now fiancee in Florida. I made two boxes myself, a larger box (like the ones you made), and a smaller one about the size of a zippo lighter, just in case I was with her and didn't want her to see the box. Great work Mike and Jonathan.
Thank you. Congratulations.
"I Cross My Heart" by George Strait. We are celebrating 25 years together. Enjoy your videos.
Great song. Thank you for sharing.
So beautiful! One of these would be perfect to present the ring I bought for my daughter Alison, who will be 18 in March. Congrats on 14 years with your lovely wife. My husband and I will celebrate 32 years together on New Years Eve. Our song is “Let’s Stay Together” by the extraordinary Al Green. Thanks for another excellent video. Cheers Mike🥂
Thank you for sharing Yvonne and congratulations on 32 years. Let's Stay Together is a great song. My dad played that one when I was a kid.
Great looking boxes, Sir. - Eddie Rabbitt ~ I Love A Rainy Night
Thank you. Great song.
Another fantastic video and project Mike.. love it all the way from Australia.. song More than a feeling - Boston.
Thank you Tim. More Than a Feeling is a great song.
Steady As We Go - by Dave Matthews Band Nice project Mike!
Cool. Thats a great song. One of DMB lesser know songs, but still good.
This would be awesome to win my wife and will be celebrating 16 years on November 9th we met online when we was both 20 and the rest is history! I wouldn't trade her for anything! Thanks for the chance to win...
Thank you for sharing. We'll put you in the running.
Again, I appreciate the chance!
And there was me hoping for Ringinger by NIN!
Ha!
You're talent is amazing! Thanks for sharing! Your second box is exactly what im looking to build for my girlfriends ring, though my talent and tool selection isn't near what you have
Thank you. Give it a go. She'll love it!
Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes
Great song.
I would like one of the ring boxes just because you made it by hand. Also because I doubt you're going to offer me that nifty electric table lift of yours. LOL
Ha!
I don’t normally comment on videos and I am not very sappy but I do appreciate your dry humor and those boxes look awesome. I am super jealous of that shop. Ohh also have a baby on the way and my girlfriends parents would appreciate it if I sealed the deal. I probabaly won’t win but thanks for making the video.
Thank you. I like it, sealed the deal. I bet they would.
That was me and my wife's wedding song!! I also made the ring box that i proposed with!!
Thats really cool. Sounds like we have similar tastes.
So, sharing because our music interests are strangely similar (Throwing Copper, Division Bell shout outs). The song that always reminds me of my wife is 'Smile' by David Gilmour, check it out. Keep up the great work mate. Benny from Down Under 😀
Thanks Benny. That is such a great song.
Hey! My fiance and I have been together for three years and are madly in love. We are going to Thailand in November, over Thanksgiving, and I am planning on proposing to her there. I already have the ring sorted out and this box would make the perfect finishing touch!

Thank you. Thats great to hear. Get after it.
Mike, I'd love a box to give to my wife on our one year anniversary in January. We've been together for a little over seven years and just got married in January of 2018. We're taking our honeymoon on our one year anniversary so it would definitely be a cool gift for her. Over the years there have been a couple songs that remind me of her, but our wedding song was "Today" by Brad Paisley so that's the most recent.
Thank you for sharing. My wife likes that song.
Can I have one mike as I can cheat and tell her I made it. Well I can tell her I watched it being made if you prefer. I need to give her a ring soon and if it was wrapped in one of those boxes it would be awesome. Best regards Dave from Ireland. Love the work.
Thank you. Ha! I wouldn't mind, just tell her you made it.

I would love to have one of your ring boxes. I met my wife when we were in undergraduate school. It was the fall of my sophomore year and we were introduced on the phone. We met, dated and married when we both graduated. We celebrated our 50th anniversary on Aug. 3. She still wears the wedding rings I gave her then, recently repaired and restored. We have two children and two grandsons. Thanks for considering me.
Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you guys have done very well together. I met my wife first semester junior year. We were friends for a long time before getting together.
Love the boxes. Great job gentlemen.
Mike - Can you explain what you used to hold the ring inside the box? Trying to figure out the best method. Thank you.
Thank you. I used some chair foam cut to size, I cut a slot for the ring, and then wrapped it with some felt. Hope that makes sense.
Yes sir it does. Thank you for the response.
A delight to watch as always Mike! Btw you bare a slight resemblance to Red's lead singer Michael Barnes
Thank you. I just looked up a recent picture, and I do look a little like him.
