“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~Albert Einstein. I strongly believe there needs to be a fundamental shift in education in our country. Instead of holding a few careers or roles in society to be superior and trying to train everyone to get as close to that as possible, I think our educational systems should focus instead on allowing young people to find out where their strengths lie, and TEACH THEM that there is dignity and satisfaction to be found in being the best version of YOURSELF that you can be.

I spent 20+ years as a programmer, with no degree, self-taught. It helped me raise my sons as a single parent. Now I see the same paths open for AI & ML that i can use to get into this field. I left programming years ago due to having a brain aneurysm. I've recently had a second aneurysm burst and can take a path to getting certified in AI & ML for as cheap as $79 a month. Wish me luck, hopefully I can make lightening strike twice.
100% agree. I am on the board of a K thru 8 and am pushing us to add trades to our college track. BTW, please provide a reference for the certification in AI and ML. I wish you all the best.
I was a senior Director in a very large company, retired early. My son wanted to go to a Tech school to get his certifications for IT work rather than a 4 year university. I was livid. So I went to my company’s CTO for help. He told me to “leave him alone, he would much rather hire a kid like my son whose been doing the work for 2 years than a College kid who’s gonna have to be trained for a year to get to my son’s level.” 25 years later, my son’s done well, raised 3 kids (2 with degrees). It’s all about work ethic, learned proficiency and determined grit to be the best at whatever you choose to do. I’ve developed 100’s of leaders and honestly, non-degreed lead degreed by at least a 2-1 margin in effectiveness. They just seem to want it more.
@ I started out with an AA in Computer Aided Drafting and Design in 1983. CAD was hot back then. It was a good school and we hit the ground running when we got hired. Ten years later, you had to have an engineering degree. I just retired after 40 years in the industry.
Bravo! My middle daughter got accepted to Bucknell for chemical engineering/management last year after receiving a free ride to so many other colleges. She accepted Bucknell. Her father didn't think I should have let her apply bc he thought she wouldn't be accepted (due to DEI and$). I said she is better than anyone I ever knew. She's accomplished so much within limitations. She's brilliant with a strong work ethic - the foundation of growing into a beneficial scientist. She found a job at 15, then offered to manage it at 16- all the while maintaining honors through h.s. Im glad to hear two men understand the greatness that is possible through work ethic and strive to be better.
Ayup. When they attempt to force people to accept or include something 'Or go to jail' when it's literally less than 1% of the population that is impacted by said thing, it's straight up totalitarianism.
This is a great discussion that should be included as we move forward, leaving behind the 'stuff' that does not matter, like work and woke ethic. If it is not productive and part of a solution, it's part or all of a problem.
I’m a licensed engineer who’s been in the workforce almost 4 decades. I make right at half of what my high school-educated airline captain friend makes. I make a smaller fraction of what my high school-educated civil/dirt work contractor friend makes. While out of town fairly often, my airline friend sleeps quite well at night knowing he has a union to protect him and he’s not on call 24-7 like the engineer. My dirt work contractor friend is his own boss and can make as much or as little as the pursues. No, the four year degree is not answer in many - maybe most cases.
Excellent interview. I have to agree that we have to get back to the norm and reestablish what is actually true, as in the example of "the fringe." The country has polarized itself on both opposite sides of the political spectrum. We need to meet back in the middle, recognizing that compromise, between both parties, is when America is at it's best.
Through the seventies, eighties and nineties I worked for several companies and every company that I worked for I was told by bosses or supervisors that I had a work ethic that was "second to none". At the time my work ethic never helped me achieve or grow in any of these companies. It always seemed that there was something that I was not privy too. Now I am beginning to understand. "Woke" in various forms and iterations goes back decades.
You should have used that you were first as leverage. Lets see how much they value second to none. I told my mom to do the same when her work was dicking her around and she nabbed a 5 dollar/hr raise out of it.
"Now I am beginning to understand. "Woke" in various forms and iterations goes back decades." Looking back over the years, I can agree with your observation. People seem to want you to know things, without anyone ever having specifically, taught or informed you of those things. After several years of being disabled, I've come to view a commonly used phrase as being the most glaring tell of hate speech. That phrase is; "That's common sense". I see it as hate speech because that individual is claiming to know something, that he or she is unwilling to disseminate knowledge they have, with those that do not have that knowledge, and is choosing to leave them ignorant and repeating mistakes. There is no love in not advising a person when the actions they take out of ignorance, is what is preventing them from moving forward.
Without common sense, you will never rise. I say this pending what your doing... It's different for everything, but running heavy equipment it's really easy to cripple or kill someone even though the task is simple.
@@scotttovey You make a great point about the importance of sharing knowledge to inform and enlighten others, it is important, especially when asked, and critical if training is your job. I have a difficulty, though with classifying the phrase above as "hate speech". To me that is implying an intentional, nefarious disregard for another that may just be a passing comment between two people. If you have been asked, or left in the dark intentionally that is bad, and yes, I could understand your view.
I wrote a paper in my first year at University regarding what was then emerging as political correctness. I hated it then in 1994 and hate it more so now. I speculated the, that by neutering our language we would cripple our social interactions. I don’t think I understood just how awful it would actually get. I am glad to see the pendulum seems to be moving back towards honest and real language that may offend but has no subversive intend like wokeness has brought about. Thank you gentlemen for speaking in a way that is truthful and impactful.

I was a recruiter for a law firm. I was interviewing these kids (graduates from law school that had just passed the bar exam) that had gone to college, then on to law school, graduated, passed the bar, and only THEN did they learn that there are more lawyers than there is a need for lawyers. We have a 10X surplus of lawyers. I had these kids that had a quarter of a million dollars in law school debt, and they are delivering pizzas for Domino's. They didn't realize that every day that passed since they graduated lowered the probability that they would get a job in law. These kids were totally divorced from reality. They thought that, soon, very soon, they would get a job at a great law firm...and they would be the hero of their own story. When my boss gave them the option of working with his firm, and do the majority of their own marketing, they were shocked and offended that he would even ASK them to be responsible for their own marketing.

I am so heartened to hear this sentiment. The fact we have vilified working with your hands AND brain in this country over the last 40 years in favor of a purely thought based skills has been criminal. Well meaning as intended as it was the outcome left swaths of youth struggling at the alter of the SAT. In the rush to catch up with European education (starting in the 80’s) we eschewed physical skills, something that used to be referred to as the “manual arts”, in favor of a degree for every student. The thought being every kid needed a white collar, when a blue one was just as valuable and for some even more so. Thank you to both of these men for there much needed light.

I am college educated, I achieved an Engineering degree and used it to advance our technical knowledge in DOD weapons technology. I paid for my education by serving the nation in the military and received the GI Bill benefits. Point, I served and in return received govt help. I took this risk during the Vietnamese war at great personal risk. Point 2, I chose to get a degree that resulted in full employment that benefited the country, not a liberal arts degree. Not all college degrees are equal. Fortunately for me, I was not exposed social manipulation, I was exposed to engineering and associated real science. Guess what, I’m highly successful. College ain’t bad, but certain college degrees are. Time to clean up our colleges to curtail useless degrees
I think merit in critical jobs is important, and we need to hire the brightest in those jobs to save America. That disqualifies me from almost all jobs but it's about what's best for America and all Americans not me. I also think you can be the smartest and have the most merit, but if your if you can't seem to no the difference between right, and wrong, enjoy doing evil, or if gaining power, fame, and wealth, for yourself at the expense of others suffering is your top priority, than maybe CEO, politician, or leader is not a good thing for that person. Even if their the most merited of all time, or the media says they are. Perhaps honesty, charity as in the scriptures verson of charity, a desire to do the right thing, might factor into one's merit.

Love theses two men ❤️
“Everybody is a genius.
That’s what vocations classes in Jr high and high school used to do. I took wood-shop twice, metal shop class, small engine repair class and drafting which all lead me to very useful skills later in life. It shows how much fun you can have creating your ideas and building the with your hands.
Merit doesn't look at gender, color, race, or religion. It means anyone can succeed if they have a bof talent and work hard to do the best they can.
Merit. It seems so simple to me as well.
And you truly believe this bullshit? Juuuust fantastic
@@dcktater7847 what’s bullshit?
I love Vivek!…And I love you, too, Mike! 🫶🏻 Keep speaking the truth 👍🏻🇺🇸
Fantastic analogy !!!! without the sun our little solar system flies into cosmic chaos !!!
Fantastic shows Mike, 🇺🇲❤️💯🙏
Been working my whole life work ethic keeps me going even now as I am in my 60's
Me too I’m 73 and have worked as a self employed landscape gardener for 50 years and have no desire to stop.
I'm in my 50s and I just love how fixing stuff, maintaining stuff, making stuff and looking at others doing it too makes me feel. Feels good man. Gday from Australia 👋 love Mr Rowe and what he's done.
Merit was the solution to racism, sexism and every form of bigotry. It still is. When someone confidently makes the case merit shouldn't matter you can be certain they want to use racism, sexism and every form of bigotry to their advantage.
I could listen to these 2 guys all day. Two great minds from 2 different walks of life that seem to have put just about anything and everything into perspective.
Vivek is such an asset for our country right now. I'm so glad he is involved with this incoming administration. Just watching him and Elon walk into meet with Congress made me feel better about things. PS} yes, the song at the end made me subscribe. sigh.
@jamesdellaneve9005 Coursera Plus $59 a month, ChatGPT Plus $20 a month. Lots of AI certificates and ML certificates.
Mike your vocabulary should be spoken everywhere! I love looking up words in the dictionary when watching. Honestly, I love it!😊
Vivek rocks and maybe someday will run as president!
I love you Mike! Vivek is absolutely Awesome ❤!
We're not even being told to "accept" the fringe anymore. We are being told or rather demanded upon us that we must fully endorse the fringe.
Excellent show. 2 great men!
Mr Vivek is 100 percent CORRECT
I’m a licensed engineer who’s been in the workforce almost 4 decades. I make right at half of what my high school-educated airline captain friend makes. I make a smaller fraction of what my high school-educated civil/dirt work contractor friend makes. While out of town fairly often, my airline friend sleeps quite well at night knowing he has a union to protect him and he’s not on call 24-7 like the engineer. My dirt work contractor friend is his own boss and can make as much or as little as the pursues. No, the four year degree is not answer in many - maybe most cases.
No question, the US needs the right leadership. Hope you get it one day.
Thank you. I was beginning to think I had to learn a new language !
Not only was the content spot on but closing this podcast with that short segment of excellent 4-part harmony put the 'cherry on top'. Well done...!
This was absolutely fantastic to watch, just brilliant. Outstanding!!! Our Republic Shall Stand!!!
What an amazing and beautiful conversation of sure sense.
Vivek is so darn intelligent and beyond his years that it is crazy. I’ve rarely if ever said that about anyone younger than me.
"Woke" in various forms and iterations goes back decades."
Looking back over the years, I can agree with your observation.
@scotttovey could not agree more
Without common sense, you will never rise.
The little cogs are what makes the pretty clock hands work. Without the cogs the clock is worthless.
Mike, I could listen to you all day!! Your common sense plus use of big words is absolutely refreshing! Vivek is smart enough to understand the nuance of your words which makes this one of the great conversations on the internet!
I'm normally very supportive of this podcast. I heard a lot of talk, but few specifics. When I, see a quantifiable improvement in the average person's life.
Then and only then. Will I support all of the rhetorical talk and metaphors. I want action, to hell with words. Cheers!
Maybe we will get somewhere who knows, focus 🇺🇲❤️
Thanks guys appreciate it.
Mike Rowe has an awesome voice. ☺️ Would be awesome in commercials are recorded audio books and things! So unique.
Mike you are a shining example of what is still great in this country! 🫡 🇺🇲

Two great and beautiful minds. Im praying our younger generation is watching this.

You shouldn't need to ask gender or race. A person should be judged on their merits and selfless acts to help their neighbor.
“They will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Hey hi hello beautiful people!
The fringe exists to pull people from the core. Always has always will. It will only affect you if you're not anchored in the core. MSM has only existed to feed off that fringe. Their whole existence has always been to divert you from the truth. Thank you Mike for another great interview. Big love and hugs to everyone.
Yup
Woooo! Vivek '28
I agree, so far he seems to have more right than Vance
2 extremely intelligent men having a conversation that so many folks don't want to end and will reflect on later in their own thoughts and strive to do a better job in their marriages, and raising their family, and their job, and conversing with their neighbor, and Society to thrive
This is a great episode!
I am full and satiated with this philosophical cuisine. Thank you. Well done. I learned a lot.
Somehow our Timeline SKEWED into this alternate timeline However it seems to have recently been fixed by Doc and Marty and possibly back on the right track. Time will of course tell us if it remained skewed to that alternate timeline or if it indeed has been corrected.
Doc and Marty had to make several trips so there is still more work to be done lol
I love Mike Rowe and what he stands for! I love how he wants to put more care in trade jobs!

Hi! Mike
I wish someone would redo the “Ernest movies” and one can only dream for you to fill Jim Varney spot. Please get something rolling with this. Thanks you’re a awesome person.
Mike's AWESOME !! Common sense at its purest form...
I'm a man of many talents, both Conservative & Fringe at the same time! College helped me relate to others when I took Drama classes and I learned how to do things in Trade School!! So, doing many things, to me, was a good thing, like fixing a car when no one is around or you can't afford a mechanics high prices!!!
One of my supervisors told me that they would not pick the best person but one that was minimally qualified and wasn’t like the rest of the staff.
Respect to both of these gentlemen!!
No college. Some factory training and sucking up as much as possible form the " old dudes" and now I'm the Chief ET for the 2ed largest Aerospace and Defense Co in the world. You can do it. USA1 GM1 GE1.
Great.. You feed the traitors 🤣
Wow look at mike Rowe he’s got his own foundation ‼️💯
Be Liberal enough to question and test something, and be Conservative enough to keep and preserve it if it works. And do it continuously.
Wise words. Good ideas can always stand up to scrutiny, which is why the US constitution stands as the oldest governing document on the planet. But they’ve been chipping away at the words therein for a loooong time.
Its time fix these things and creating hope again! Thanks for this interveiw

Awesome interview. We as a nation need to bring respect and unity back.🇺🇸
I am college educated, I achieved an Engineering degree and used it to advance our technical knowledge in DOD weapons technology.
Mike it good to here someone else who believes in, faith family and hard work, there has to be as good solid foundation.
Why don't you upload the full versions of these we would all watch them
So amazing to see these two taking. ❤❤.
Old preacher buddy of mine said all te time, 'Plain talk's easy understood'. Gopher it, yall!
Iworked a trade and went to college at night to get a better job and life. My wife became ill and passed. I wish I had spent that money and time with her instead. I t made me feel guilty and tossed. Plus it never paid off. Every job wanted experiences in addition to the degree. What a waste. A trade pays more money and benefits.😮
Lost not tossed
Safetyism. That is so appropriate in my job. I have almost 30 years in a tire plant that was purchased by a larger Corporation. One thing I heard over and over was how profitable we are but thanks to the "Wokeism" and "Safetyism" that is no longer true. The whole Corporation is barely keeping it's head above water and just sold it's off road division to another Company. At this rate I doubt it will get any better. Thank you Vivek and Mike for speaking the truth. Oh yeah we are now part of Goodyear.
