It should have been restored exactly as it was before it was burned. It was such a beautiful building.

Why? If it's just your feeling, then say it's your opinion, not authoritatively as if it was the universal truth.
My opinion: If it was restored to the pre-fire state, it would be quite useless to the modern Bundestag and would remain a museum, not a seat of power.

In a symbolic and architectural viewpoint, I think it’s marvelous! A tasteful take on old and new. It’s just right.

They should have at least rebuilt the shape of the old dome with glass, the old dome looked so much better.

The Reichstag had some damage after the war, for sure. But the German architect Paul Baumgarten castrated the building - a shame what he has done with it. You can see it here, type it in and you find a lot of pictures: Reichstag rebuilding/reconstruction - blowing up the old dome (the dome never was insecure, it was just the argument to remove it), the entrance (made of stone) was replaced by a huge wall of glass, all four towers were reduced in their height, removing the complete interior and most of the decration of the facade. About Foster: Norman Foster never wanted a dome, he wanted a big roof made of glass over the entire Reichstag. Some experts for architecture wanted to rebuild some of the decoration parts of the facade: rejected by the German government. The old dome: rejected by the government - the old dome and historical decortaion parts don't represent a modern democracy! Retards.

BLITZund DONNER Exactly, the German government should cherish Berlin's unique history and old architecture, but instead it seems they are trying to remove and cover it all with soulless glass and steel.

+BLITZund DONNER You underestimate the the degree of destruction inflicted on the building during the Battle of Berlin. Photographs suggest that the exterior stonework of the Reichstag and the Altes Museum, as another example of the destruction of Berlin, had to be almost entirely recut and reset.
And in Germany perceptions of architecture have intense political meaning, as stated in the film, there is a belief that the architecture of democracy and the architecture of dictatorship differ greatly. This is a dubious notion plagued by contradictions but nevertheless it is a view widely held in Germany that could not be dismissed in a adaptation/reconstruction of the Reichstag.

No, i don't underestimate that. And you can't compare these two buildings.
I am German and i know the whole thing when it comes to this kind of the "bad old architecture". There is no "architecture of democracy", it's just nonsense from some idiots like Mr. Blablabla Conradi.
The Reichstag from today is an ugly, boring building, simple as that. It's the best proof for the idiotic small minds in the German Bundestag. They didn't want to rebuild some fantastic columns, figures etc., but they preserved a lot of the graffiti shit from the Russians. Stupid "We are guilty forever" souls.
Back then we in Berlin were asked how the Reichstag should look like - with the old dome, the stupid roof and Egg-Dome from Foster or like it was - the vote was clear. Bring back the old version of the dome and some old and removed parts on the facade. That would have been a real sign of democracy - respect the vote of the people who were asked. And now, we have that piece of modern garbage - with a Coffeehouse on the roof. Our new Stadtschloß: Coffeehouse on the roof. A shame.

I wonder if they purposely made the new dome look unfinished. Personally I think its very ugly.

Twenty years ago today, Reichstag Building in Berlin has reopened for the first time in public in 66 years to have an open session in Germany’s Bundestag.

Germany doesn't exist, it called the EU and Belgium. Germany is scared to even openly say they are patriotic and loved many different aesthetics of there past before the commies mass raped them, no one was ever punished for that and the mass genocides done against citizens, although they loved the punish the Wehrmacht which where not SS or SA in the courts after WW2, even though all the did was fight and nothing more

Interesting he talks about German architects filled with emotion " sweaty hands". I am certain political weasels have gained far more control using this in western countries and Germany in particular. By calling a German politician a " Nazi " he could have them doing jumping jacks in the parking lot to proove hes not.
