The ONLY 2 Lenses I needed for a Landscape Photography Journey!

- The Dolomites in north Italy is one of the most epic areas in the world to take landscape photos. On this year's photography tour I only brought two lenses. A 16-35mm and a 50-400. It felt odd breaking the "holy trinity of lenses", however, it worked out perfectly. We also got some incredible moody conditions and some beautiful golden hours with loads of colors!

Beautiful memories of an absolutely epic workshop!
Haha! Thanks for a great trip, Phil! :D
I’ve skied in the Dolomites and think it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Your eye for the area and the photos you capture are just so special Mads and I envy your amazing dedication and talent.
I like the first one in which is the mountain bigger and the side light brings a glow in the image. The sky is amazing.
Really nice work Mads! I think a perfectly blue sky just would not have yielded as captivating a mood as these conditions were. Ethereal. Otherworldly. Spectacular. 👏
Thanks a lot, Bruce! Appareciate it :)
Definitely prefer the single shot over the pano version of the mountain shot with colorful sky. The single shot gives the right balance to the size of the mountains while showing just enough of the awesome sky. Your images from this trip were incredible. Love how your images always have such great contrast and tones.
Definitely no need to apologise for using the word epic Mads! Wowee what a fantastic set of images you got in these cloudtastic conditions. This is one I'll be watching again and again. The 16mm pink sunrise for me please!
Hello Mads, yes, this 2 lens combo is awesome and fun! I will go with these 2 lenses (plus a fast 50, just in case...) to Lake District next week! Really looking forward to it!
I prefer the single photograph of the mountain with that glorious sky, because the mountain looks incredible.
Absolute stunning shots from the Dolomites :)
Great video ! ;)
This has just confirmed that the Dolomites are right at the top of my Bucket List! Spectacular!
Thanks for the abundance of photos. Especially liked the morning shot at 12:40. Great advice as usual. Some super clouds!
Just breathtaking Mads. Those moody conditions are a dream!!!! I must go here one day. I always think its like a European version of Patagonia.
Big panorama. Thanks for the breathtaking video.
truly stunning conditions! "Epic" is definitely a hugely overused description, but in this case I'd 100% say it fits. Nice!
I agree with the choice of lenses. I use a 16-35mm and a 70-300mm. If I need something in the middle, I'm fine cropping an image from the 16-35.
Your images are simply amazing. Always the perfect composition. What a talent you have. We are lucky to have you share it with us. I prefer the view that shows the mountains in close, despite the better balance on the second photo. Thank you!
Mads, your pictures break my heart wide open. 💗
Epic. You have to use that word in those places and in those conditions, absolutely. Spectacular photos Mads!
Absolutely "Epic" photographs once again. Thanks for taking us along.
The memories this video gives me are fantastic. Great work 😁😁
One of my very favourite things about the 16-35 f4 is the internal zoom. If you’re taking panoramics, this is a godsend, as you don’t need to recalibrate the no-parallax points on your nodal slider every time you change focal length. Less important at greater distances or with a tele, but so useful in woodland or closer focal lengths.
By the way, I too have the 50-400 on my Sony and am wondering if you ever have trouble auto-focussing on clouds with it? It’s a huge problem if there’s no strong contrasting edges. As I’m a recent convert to Sony, I’m wondering if it’s my focus settings rather than the lens itself. Other than that, the lens seems to be my go-to at the moment (I’m often alternating it with a very old Macro Takumar 1-1 in woodlands for close-up work. That old lens is still fantastic!). I haven’t found the vignetting to be troublesome but I do wish it had a zoom lock (or tightening function that its ((much heavier)) Sony competitor has).
Good morning Mads, I just want to say Thank you so much for all the videos. Totally educational to a start like me. Please keep them coming. You are a legend. Thank you once again. Rudy
Stunning, Mads. I still want to know when you're going to schedule another Faroe workshop!
The photo at 12:32 WOW! Amazing work as always. Love the idea of two lenses. The lighter the pack, the further you go, the more you see. Keep up the good work
So beautiful and very atmospheric, Mads! Magical!
Absolutely breathtaking! Some of the colours are just incredible!
Nice work, Beautiful pictures, and Amazing data and comments!
Thanks so much
I like the 16mm version as well.
My favorite shot is at 12:32, beautiful sunrise. Second favorite is at 14:38, third 13:06... what stunning locations. Your photos from this trip should be a large format book in themselves, a calendar or an exhibition.
Thanks a lot :)
thank you very much every day I learn from you
Some stunning photos here, the reflections especially at 12.39 were simply awesome. Many thanks for sharing
Insane photos Mads! Just stunning. The dawn images are incredible - I think I prefer the 16 - 35 shot in spite of the compromise with the sky. Great video 😍
16mm, this location is on my bucket list. What a treasure to see this area through your lens.
What a spectacular place, and photos.
And starting today you also have another option Tamron 17-50mm f/4!!!
As always Mads, beautiful shots and very enjoyable video! Cheers!
So beautiful, congrats! Thank you for sharing your maps!
I'm impressed with the photos from your Tamron. Previously, I used a Tamron 150-600 and was rarely satisfied with the results. Sold it and bought a Canon 100-400 and have been thrilled with the results...
That was some absolutely beautiful stuff. Makes me so jealous and wanting to go to the amazing places you get to go to.
☁️🌤️☀️Wow Mads the conditions ❤Awesome captures …love the revolving drone shots . I’m with you a little wider reach would have been a little nicer to have BUT the light was so perfect you can’t go wrong ! All in all great video ❤!!!
Thank you so very much, Art! :D
They allow to fly drones at Dolomites or do you need to a permit to do so?
Very nice one Mads - looks like you had a blast!
I was in Dolomites last week and had three lenses with me (a 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens, a 70-200mm f4.0 and a 50mm f1.4). I could find an opportunity to use all of them!
The weather on Lagazuoi was terrible last Wednesday; it was so cloudy that I could take only two-three photos there.
It’s a pity that I only watched your video now! I was at Passo di Giago twice last week, took amazing photos but I really wish I knew about the pond there! Your photos from that perspective are amazing! 📸😍👍
Stunning images as always. Definitely a bucket list location for me now
Fantastic video. beautiful compositions, stunning location.
Absolute amazing set of images from the Dolomites!!!
Awesome shots as always! Thanks for sharing. I prefer the 16mm shot from the last sunrise shoot👍 absolutely stunning
Epic landscapes. Compliments!
Epic photos Mads! ;-) ❤
As to your question of which photo at 15:13 I prefer, that is a tough decision! Both are stunningly beautiful, but I think the 16mm on the left is my favorite. The LOCATION is gorgeous, and the sky enhances that. The photo on the right seems to have the SKY as the subject and not the location, which, as beautiful as they both are, it just seems like a disservice to the mountains to make them second fiddle. 🤷🏻♀️
I’m just starting out in photography, and I have already learned so much from you, Nigel Danson, and James Popsys.
Thank you for all the amazing tips and tricks and the gorgeous locations!
I have a 40mm, 13mm and 70-200 mm. Do you think this will be good for landscape photography?
I am using APSC.
My fav setup is quite different
Sony 16-35 f4
Tamron 28-200
Sigma 60-600
Spectacular photos !!!!!
Amazing video Mads !!! You've got some epic atmospheric captures. The picture with the 16mm i prefer @ 15:13 because the mountains are coming out much better. In a few weeks i'm going to that same location, i hope i got the same conditions ;) Thanks Mads for sharing this super content !!!!
Great Video and Picture!! Thanks Mads for sharing!!
You ask I comment and I feel proud of you more and more!
Of the two I'd definitely go for the right one! I don't know, the cropped left picture of the same frame looks a bit more tightly framed than one on right in a relief it required, although this one could be compositionally cropped from the foregoing to get the balance right because of its being too static running left to right in the middle of the frame and in this aspect the left side picture has an edge over the right picture, but the fact that being tightly framed the burned out portion had become a distracting element in this picture giving a sense of imbalance in the overall color cast in the picture because it blended a little bit less than the entire frame and you can see this portion has been more blended in the right side picture! I found the picture an interesting study even though both the pictures are surrealistic in nature and the rocks form an interesting laying of a sculpture of a devine structure of a God kept in nature and it's more pronounced in the left side picture than the second because the symmetry has been beautifully maintained with the reflection in the water! But you could see this is somewhat squashed in the left side picture!
The 50-400 is a very nice lens, and I love mine. Won't be selling my 28-200 though. I just came back from a massive multiday hike in Lapland, and the 28-200 was my weapon of choice. I only wanted to bring one lens due to massive backpack (super heavy and little free space). Wish it was stabilised like the 50-400, but most of my shots were taken hand held and many of them on the longer side of the focal span. No bigger issues with a steady hand, most images where tack sharp with low ISO (100-200). Now I'm debating whether I should skip the tripod on my next bigger hike and bring the 50-400 instead. I'd miss the
Very interesting, lovely shots. Keep well & stay safe 👍🇬🇧
I love your videos! Lots of great advices, and gorgeous photos, and useful tips. I personnaly believe on the @15:13 time, with the 2 photos : the one on the right, stitched from multiple shots, have too much of sky and lake : maybe crop-out both of those areas quite a lot to bring the features of the mountain a bit closer to the top and bottom edges (not too close... but maybe 1/2 way of their curret reach?) : this will of course modify the aspect ratio but should, I believe, bring out a better composition with less "monotonous" areas? And it should help to bring back the size of the mountains (if not, maybe crop a lot more top and bottom (maybe the bottom more than the top))
Wow absolutely beautiful photo captures! The atmospheric conditions were just perfect for “epic” shots. Excellent work Mads 🤩
Great video and photos Tks...Per your request I prefer the stitched photo but cropped more on bottom bringing wider mountains and sky ;>}
PS Which drone do you use for the video?
wooow, absolutely spectacular images, with a fantastic atmosphere..., I am left speechless..., impressive photos, I wouldn't know which one to choose..., congratulations...😉
Another great video Mads! I love how excited you get whenever you’re in an EPIC (😉) location. I learn a lot from your commentary and reviews. The photobooks look amazing too! Thank you so much for all the value you add to the photographer community!
Great! Do you take a Backup-Camera? By the way - I totally prefer the 16mm-Version!
Stunning shots
amazing place for landscape photograph
Very nice! I was there recently and your video brought me back :-) We missed the Passo Giau; such a great place! It is now in my list for if I find the time to go again. Thanks
So with 16-35 and 50-400, you're not really missing much, and it almost makes a 24-105 or 24-70 redundant especially for landscapes where you're shooting at smaller f-stops (like f/5.6 and higher in many cases). I've thought about doing this dual setup with my Nikon system, except for that Nikon doesn't have a 50-400 but a 100-400 which would leave a decent gap from 30mm to 100mm, so until Tamron or someone else comes out with something like a 50-400 or even a 50-300 that's suitable for landscape, I may have to stick with my 3-lens setup for now (which covers all FLs from 14mm to 400mm, with a bit of overlap between each). I guess though while I would like a 16-35, the 14-30 is actually very useful especailly at 14mm (my only complaint is that the edges are not terribly sharp so I end up having to crop them out in many cases when shooting under 16mm). Nikon does have their older DSLR 16-35 which I may try, but optically their new Z 14-30 is supposedly sharper throughout in general, so it may be a tossup and not much of a gain trying to use their 16-35 (I lose 2mm on the wide end, gain 5mm on the long end, but may lose a bit of sharpness overall).
Hi, Mads. Why are you not just using profile correction for vignetting rather than shooting with the small aperture?
It's not enough, the profile correction is rather useless... sadly...
but I do use it, I just need to add more correction and I prefer not to do that.
@MadsPeterIversen makes sense. I have the lens, but I haven't used it too much yet, so might not have noticed it. As a separate question. Do you miss the gap between the 35mm and 50mm? I have the 20-70mm f4 + 16mm f1.8 Viltrox to cover uw and astro instead of 16-35
I don't bother with the remaining vignette after the automatic correction profile. It's not really relevant.
Of the two mountain images, I prefer the 16mm one. The sky is beautiful but the mountains are more important.
Hello teacher!!! A question. What size to use in Saal digital albums? 40x30? Greetings.
Hi, depends what you like yourself. The specific one I made is the biggest, so 40x30 :)
@@MadsPeterIversen Thanks you!!
Timely offer, about time I put another book together. Thanks
You are welcome ;)
Which camera are u using ?
Hi Mads, great photos as always! 👏
For the first image with the reflections in the water, what did you focus the camera on? The mountain, the person? It looked like you focused on the center of the frame? Is there a reason why this is better? And would love a separate video on time blending. That photo is amazing!
What are the two lenses?
Awesome video!! Awesome photos!! Your videos are amazing.
Should I get Tamron 50-400mm 1155g with A7RV 723g or Tamron 18-300mm (27-450mm) 620g with XT5/A6700 557g/493g mainly for photo and if I pair it with iPhone 15 13-52mm 171g for pocketable pic/vid stuffs and Panasonic HC-X1500 25-600mm 1200g camcorder with Zoom M3 mic 135g mainly for video? How about G9 II 658g with 50-200mm (100-400mm) 655g? Full frame Lumix, Nikon and Canon doesn't provide such focal lengths lens, right?
Tamron 50-400mm I can crop a lot more, 2X or even 3X, but is it sharp enough to do so? Tamron 18-300mm I can have a 27mm everyday focal length and have native 50mm more tele but can't crop a lot more and quality control doesn't seem consistent base on reviews? They all have 1:2 macro, can I add extension tube to all of them to reach beyond 1:1 macro? Should I add ultra zoom lens but need to change lenses or the iPhone is enough you think? Should I get Tamron 17-50 or Sony 16-35 Power Zoom to pair with the 50-400, will the Sony one looks different rendering? Or should I get a fast ultrawide and just crop in?
A7RV has the unique 4 was screen but not all video type get full sensor readout, XT5 has silver body color and dedicated tactile dials but will I use them much and I want realistic image color mainly, A6700 seem good grip but smaller EVF yet unpocketable, G9 II screen only go side way but it has 300 fps and has my favorite Yellow color as the menu theme!
Absolutely stunning photos. I prefer the 16 mm view of the mountain. I would like to print a few of my photos. Do you have any guidance on metal vs. acrylic?
Hi Mads, beautiful. Could tell me what tripod you were using?
i would like to know the time of day or meta data? thanks
Fantastic photos!
great video! I have been to south tyrol several times for camping, going almost every year now, and its unreal how beautiful the area is - and so much to explore - for many many years :-)
Great video, Mads. I prefer the 16 mm over the pano. Maybe a 12 or 14 mm would have been better, but you go with the lens you have. Great shot!
I prefer the 16 mm image because as you mention in the video where the panorama image does not make the mountains look big enough
I like the the single 16mm shot best, although both are nice. Kind regards
👍👍👍Excelente fotos, con tu optimismo parece fácil.Una pregunta el curso de edición lo tienes en Español? , gracias.
Beautiful photos
I was in Dolomites at around the same time. Great location and great pictures! I wonder what was the lens shoe you use at 10:37.
Mesmerizing beauty! WOW!!! As always, thanks. I liked the 16mm at 14:50
What about the newly released Tamron 17-50mm f4?
Yup.....Epic is definitely tour middle name! 😄
I hope to visit the dolomites very soon and you have lit a fire of creativity in me!
Absolutely stunning images!
I prefer the 16mm image, as the frame seems a little more balanced. Its a fantastic image 😊
Wooow EPIC PHOTOS ❤❤ You creating a masterpiece from raw photo 🤩🤩
Brother you’re dope as dynamite!!!! Love your work
Mads, I know your not a travel photographer, however if you could only take 1 lens with you on a holiday that involves a lot of landscapes and street, what lens would it be? Thanks for giving it a thought.
24-70!
My recommendation to you would be to get the new 17-50 f4 instead of the 16-35,
Feels more complete,😅
All shots were EPIC. I like the 16mm sunrise shot the best. The magnitude of the mountains gets lost in the panorama and it's too pink. I can only imagine how amazing a 360 sunrise that beautiful was. Maybe a 14mm lens would have given a little more sky, but not sure. Guess you're going back...So glad you didn't use generative fill. Stunning work!
Just gorgeous! 👍🥂
Mads, another great video... my preference is the dedicated 16mm version rather than the stitched pano of the sunrise... 🙂
Yes, EPIC!
Easy Peasy Mads!
What are your lenses
