- The end of January marks the end of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing - and the end of our stint in Hawaii. For our final episode of The Pick-Up, presented by Vans, we’re joined by North Shore prince and entertainer, Mason Ho.
In this excerpt from the Final Episode of The Pick-Up, Mason gives us his perspective on Pat Curren’s legacy and gets hilariously honest about why he didn’t surf the Backdoor Shootout. We also get a chance to hear a Kelly Slater related story about local lifeguard and Eddie Invitational champion Luke Shepardson.

I agree. Luke is a beast. So humble and cool. I like the interview the next morning when he was a work and they ask him why he’s there and he like “I have no vacation days!”
What a killer story. I’m almost 50, too. Lived in Hawaii in the 90s and surfed everyday. My keikis still live there. I live on mainland now, on EC, but still surf as much as possible. And true about MH, good attitude and tells a funny story, too!

My brother in law lived with Pat Curren (and a bunch of other surfer animals) in a WW2 quonset hut above Waimea back in the mid to late 50’s. No one surfed Pipeline then cuz they thought it was unmakable and too dangerous. Some did bodysurf pipe then though.

UPDATE: I just found out that my brother in law did NOT live in the quonset hut above Waimea. However, he did live in a house in Pupukea with Pat Curren, Rusty Miller, and Diff. Sorry about that. So weird cuz for decades I believed he lived in that frikkin hut.
