This is absolutely an amazing documentary. So much history properly told and I'm flooded with great Arcade memories. I remember when Samurai Shodown 2 hit the arcades in 94 and how floored we were to witness it. When it came to detailed 2D fighting game stages, no company could touch SNK back then. Thank you for your hard work and fantastic video.

The intro of this game always makes me emotional and gives me chills. It is really a beautiful intro.
The quality here is simply staggering.
First time in a long while I can drink my Whisky and relax to such a great narration. I'm from Europe and a country without any Arcade Culture, so I haven't the strongest bonds to SNK, but man, I'm a big fan of Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters and there clearly aren't enough good people out there on UA-cam who come up with good SNK stuff. Great channel.
@@TheAufziehvogel That's awesome, that you have discovered the wonderful games that SNK makes, be ready for upcoming "the king of fighters XV (15)"
@@franciscor390 I will. Hope they will create a Switch port (if announced) along with the other big consoles. Really enjoyed XIV. I think their DLC mechanics are acceptable. I mean, way more acceptable in comparison to Koei Tecmo and this damn Mortal Kombat XI where the retail version feels like you're playing on an arcade cabinet with all the monetization. Really hope SNK will not cross the border to scam people like they do. But I do think they will handle new titles quite well.
I havent even watch but i give it a straight like. 2 hours dedicated to this memorable game deserves it
Thank you for releasing the full documentary. I learned a lot about the series from this. Growing up I played the original in the arcade and eventually 2, 3 and 4. Most arcades closed in my area but I think I played Samurai Shodown V at the Jersey shore many years ago. I own the first game on Gameboy, Game Gear, Super Nintendo and 3DO.
In my area Samurai Shodown was not common but the multigame arcade cabinets with Fatal Fury and World Heroes were found at roller skating rinks and movie theaters. I had an opportunity to play The Last Blade a few times which is my favorite series by SNK after Samurai Shodown.
Nice complete history of samurai shodown was a good watch, love the games on the neogeo and i rember buying the aes version on release and playing it to death what a game for it time.
FYI, the English dub of Samurai Shodown The Motion Picture is uploaded on UA-cam. If you search for it, it’s free to watch, but please support the franchise ;).
I much rather watch Ninja Scroll and pretend is Shamurai Shodown 😁
I used to have Samurai Shodown The Motion Picture on VHS, and I still have my DVD version.
Fun fact: Did you know that Yuki Enterprise (makers of Samurai Shodown V) also made the Arcana Heart series under the name Examu?
Great documentary ! my Lunch break became so much better with this
Glad i could make your lunch break better today ☺️
Samurai Shodown was the reason I bought a 3DO system back in the day. While some may fault that version, at the time the 3DO port by Crystal Dynamics was the finest non-NeoGeo version available and I feel it still holds up today. Yes, the 3DO only had a 2x CDROM, but that was a lot faster during gameplay than the painfully slow, but slightly more accurate NeoGeo CD version.
I had the 3DO version as well. You are absolutely right about it being the closest port. My cousins and I would play for hours. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was an excellent port as well.
In Japan, there was a 1995 port of 1 and 2 on 1 disc on the PS1. One of my most coveted items in my game collection
Man, this was so well done. I can only imagine the time and effort that you put into this. I played the first three instalments of the game and I never knew how grounding breaking this franchise was until this documentary. Great work 👏👏👏.
Thank you for the kind words! If you have time dont forget to check my history of Art of fighting documentary, and the history of fatal fury which is currently still ongoing.
Same his information is awesome I myself have been SNK since if first started playing fighting from SNK in arcades from 91 onwards his information is awesome and is fact he does his homework as a Passion well others long since moved on to other fighting games this teacher has remained loyal and stuck with SNK from day one but I stumbled soon this UA-cam years ago and subbed after watching afew of the docos on the lores of king of fighters and samurai shodown I myself did not know 98 % of what was going on in the SNK universe I'm glad I chose this channel and frequent often to watch the videos
Well done man. I love this series and it was sick to learn so much about its history. Thanks for all your hard work on this.
Thank you for the kind words. Make sure to check my other snk documentaries like the history of Fatal Fury and the history of art of fighting.
Thank you so much for this captivating documentary. The amount of dedication and hard work spent on this 2 hour video is very clear. Thumbs up !
Hey Man, thanks for your hard work and very comprehensive feature! One of my favorite fighting game series ever! However, I'm not sure if other commenters have mentioned it or not, but in the Samurai Shodown V part, you forgot to mention about the B+C+D / Issen move that you can do after you perform the rage explosion.
All of the documentaries in this channel are amazing. One for Last Blade would be awesome!
Beautiful video. So unbelievably amazing.
One of my all-time favorite games!!! This game was epic!!! The nostalgia right now!!!
Oh my god! Two hours of Samurai Shodown history, that's all I asked today. Thank you.
You are very welcome! Makebsure to check the other documentaries i have on the channel, like hisyory of fatal fury, art of fighting and KOF!
dude...this took me back. and all my experience with this series was actually with arcade releases. from middle school to college. really good video, learned stuff too.
despite being a major fan of SNK (and ESPECIALLY SamSho) since forever, i learned so much in this well put together vid, thank you
That was just amazing. Your Love and dedication towards the series really shows in here. Thank you for the documentary.
Very informative, To say it in the words of a Dynasty warriors officer. You are a true fan of the Samurai Showdown Series. Thanks to you. Iam new to the series and it helped alot to look you documentary. King of fighters interests me too. Do you know some fighting game series that still ongoing today ? Ive grown up with tekken and Soul calibur also street fighter. But iam Hungry for more. I know blazblue, Mortal Kombat, Gulity gear exists, also the spin off fight game of granblue fantasy. Injustice, marvel vs capcom. Also bought samurai showdown for ps4.
If there are any series that i forgot. I would like to purchase them all. Fighting games are just so damn good to play.
When NEOGEO hit arcades is was powerful but when this game dropped on SNES I was in love. I played for hours after school and mastered EVERY character on EVERY level of difficulty.
Well executed documentary 👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing video, gg Nabil ! What you say about the 1st SamSho is exactly what i felt back then in 1993.. this is the game that had me ask my parents to buy me a Neo Geo. Looking forward to watch the next videos. Keep it up, Samurai !
Amazingly well done video bro! Samurai Spirits/Shodown is one of my favourite series of games with 2 being the best in my opinion. Keep these coming!
This game was love at first sight.
Dark Stalkers was another one.
YES DARK STALKERS I ALSO GREW UP ON IT
GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL FOR THIS RESPECTFUL AND BEAUTIFUL FILM ABOUT ONE OF THE GREATEST VIDEO GAMES EVER MADE
Fantastic video. But may I correct one little thing @34:08 you say that "The game is the first to introduce a parry move", I'm not agree with this since Fatal Fury 2 (1992) did it first. This move is called "Defensive attack" or Guard & attack".
Awesome video. I remember the first time I saw Samurai Shodown. It was round about the time arcades really took off in my country - right about the time several new malls were built in my area so you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one. Naturally each mall had a movie theatre with attached arcade. In my case, I used to go with my mother on her Friday-after-school weekly grocery shopping trips to a particular mall, and I'd go and hang out in the arcade with whatever pennies I saved during the week.
I already knew about Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and a few other versus fighters, but the first time I laid eyes on Samurai Shodown, I just clicked with it. Unfortunately, I was shyte at the game, so I never got much play value for the tokens I pumped into it, but I still loved it. Some time later, it was joined by Samurai Shodown II, which was even more amazing to me. I had a Zambian friend at school who was also a fighting game player, and Samurai Shodown was all we would ever talk about - rumours we'd heard about how to do certain moves and such... Looking back, we clearly thought there was more to it than there actually was - but still a good time to be a teen gamer. He would also rant and rave in double dutch to me about this game called The King of Fighters, which was in the local arcade where he lived, but it didn't come to any arcades I could easily reach and I wouldn't play it for the first time until a few years later on console.
I desperately wanted a home version of Samurai Shodown II, but it never happened. The Neo Geo console wasn't available in my country and, even if it was, it would have been so expensive hell would have frozen over before my parents would have let me get it, even for a combined birthday and christmas present. So, years later, I had to make do with pirate ROMs, but finally when the ACA releases came out, I snapped those up - and also the recently released collection.
I love Samurai Shodow.
Shogun was not a Popular film in the 90's, it was a Television Series from 1980.
😭 man this doc is so beautiful
This was excellently done!! Thank you for the in-depth information. I was there from the beginning when this game came out & your video filled me in on so much, and for a title I loved dearly. Thank you!
Wow, so much effort. This should be a mainstream release somewhere.
Very interesting video! I haven't played much Samurai Shodown but always thought it looked really cool. It was fun to learn all about the franchise from this video!
Dude! THANK YOU!!!!! This documentary is great and made things clear to much of us.
AHHH GREAT HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY OF ONE OF MY FAVOURITE FIGHTING GAMES OF THE 90'S!
Amazing job. Thank for this documentary. This is the best fighting game franchise ever for me.
Thank you for doing Samurai Shodown justice! This is still my favourite fighting game franchise.
Thank you so much for putting this out. Very cool to see the history of this game series. I was introduced to these games in the late 90’s, laundromat arcade 😂 after that, I used to play it with my older brother on an emulator that was burned to a cd (wish I still had it). Currently started playing the new samurai shodown on ps4, I suck but still tons of fun!
Great video you shed so much light and information regarding this beloved franchise it shows the uos and downs as well as transition of a video game series throughout changes and dealing with different market, censorships, evolution and fan fare..your amazing fir this and perfectly executed, with your narration and footage
I really appreciated your effort to so a documentary of the best fighting Game series in the world
You released this masterpiece of a video exactly 1 year ago. I came to show respect to your excellence
Thank you boss! Hoping the historybof Fatal Fury will be even better. Script of 1st ep is done.
@@NeoGeoNow can’t wait to watch it
Hey dude. The Samurai Shodown RPG in English footage you used was taken from my channel. It was my translation project and a friend designed and drew the English "Tales of the Bushido" logo at my request. I don't mind its use, but credit and a link back to my SSRPG Let's Play would be appreciated. Thank you! Good work on the doc.
Done! Awesome work man!
@@NeoGeoNow why did he even have to ask for that? You don't ask for permission before you take something?
@@megatrolltrollington i always credit. This was a case of me forgetting nothing more.
@@NeoGeoNowquality content, accountability. Keep doing your best bro. Respect the effort. Great doc. Peace.
5 minutes in and this is amazing. well done job. thank you for this amount of detail and passion put into this video essay.
This video-doc definitely had me reliving my childhood i went n copped the game for ps4 and it had all 6 games available so living. The Neo-Geo dream
I've always loved every Samurai Spirits game from the first one way back in 90's.. It always remembers all my childhood days playing those games along the Street Fighter series.. I'm just glad that even now those legendary games are still updating giving us grown-ups the entertainment as just had when we were just little children and now for this new generation to experience that same excitement we felt back then... Trully SNK is right with their tag line: THE FUTURE IS NOW!!!…..
Amazing documentary! Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Thank you for this documentary, I trully haven't time to watch it yet, but I'm really interested on this, this is one of my favorites franchises of all time
An exhaustive and extremely well done documentary. Thank you.
I remember seeing this game in 1993, instantly loved it. I drew so many puctures of the characters, I was so obsessed with this game lol. Loved Samurai Showdown RPG, wish Soul Calibur would do something like it.. I remember seeing Kyo, and Iori cameo in the game lol
Excellent video and this documentary is amazing. Thank you for your diligence and hard work. Looking at the game at 120fps with HDR brought me here.
I didn't know how this game ended up at the 7 Eleven and Laundromat in my teen era. It was awesome to hear the amazing story behind it. Thanks gamer brethren.
Ain't nobody beating this. Total respect
Great video here... I fall in love how you presenting the journey of the game
Excellent video, deserves to have more views. I thank you for the effort and time invested in this video
This is only the beginning my friend! Even more insane projejcts are the way. Check my latest post for the details ;)

This was an excellent documentary. Very well made, and more detail than I ever expected. Thanks a lot for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Make sure to check my other 2 SNK documentaries, the history of Fatal Fury and the History of Art of Fighting.
Incredible documentary work, congratulations
1:51:49 "She becomes a fan favorite"
... I wonder why?
Because she gives Mai some competition in the boobs department! 😜
Awesome job man, really quite an amazing documentary. You can tell that it is a work of passion!
Just a little correction/distinction though. I will not talk about the 3DO port because I don't know that machine well enough (although I have a big suspicion that it is the same case as the Saturn), the Saturn port did not suffer mainly because of the slow disk tech of the time, but because of the lack of RAM. That lack of RAM made it then rely on the disk drive more, which, as you said, was slow, and thus compounded the problem. Which is why SS III and IV ports worked WAY better, because those used the RAM cartridge (it just shows how starved of RAM the Saturn really was, because of the HUGE difference only 1MB of RAM had).
It is also how more impressive games Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter could even work, but with the help of the 4MB RAM cart this time around.
Great Work!!! Thanks for educating us.
Thank you for the kind words. Make sure to check the history of Art of fighting and the hisyory of Fatal fury documentaries on my channel.
This was my childhood thank you for doing this
Such an awesome doc! Thank you for making this!
I Can't believe you straight up forgot my boy Ukyo for the SS3 cast
Every character was epic!!! I lived on this game in the 90's!!!
Hey do you think you could do full individual vids on SNK characters similar to the nostalgic gamer with his dark stalkers series
I highly recommend ShoryuGame if you are looking for videos like that!
Great information
Fatal Fury/King Of Fighters & Samurai Shodown were all games that impressed me as a kid as I loved fighting games (I got Street Fighter 2 on the SNES when I was 11yrs old) but I only saw these games in magazines or on TV only. I never saw a Neo Geo and never saw these SNK machines in the arcades I visited. I always wanted to play Samurai Shodown more because it was unique as it used weapons unlike all the other fighting games
Galford was my favorite. His dog was a cool addition to the character esthetic
after watching this i then watched the anthology for the games and it was well worth
Audio seems to be missing from 1:24:00 to 1:26:00
I'm new to SamSho and this is a wonderful documentary. Thank you!
very nice in-depth video. did a superb job capturing the essence of what made SS great.
p.s.: what's your first language?
Excellent video. Love these super long docs by ultra nerds on youtube, reminds me of PBS in the 80's.
Ashame VI wasn't received well. It looks and sounds like something I'd like to play. Also wish it VI got an online version like V Special did.
2 hrs worth of material? Man's did research. Salute.
(Neo Geo games always fascinated me growing up. The zoom effect was crazy. (It's besides the point, but is a metal slug vid available or possible? One of my favorite SNK games.)
23:03 Man, you mentioned here the game was released at SEGA SATURN, but I am pretty sure it doesn't. The game was released at SEGA CD but at the Saturn only released SS 3 and SS4. ALSO, Both Samurai Spirits and Shin Samurai Spirits, were released at 1998 for the PLAYSTATION 1, in Japan Only, at a miscellaneous 1 disc realease called "Samurai Spirits: Kenkaku Shinan Pack"
Great video! I stopped playing SamSho at SamSho4 and only picked it up again after V Special was available on Steam. :)
Samurai showdown is technically is the first game I ever I played in my life I’m happy to see it back and I hope we will get a sequel with good netplay and perhaps crossplay
9:32 Qing is pronounced "Ching". That's such an amazing documentary of an amazing game!
This is amazing, good job on this!
Dude.....hats off to you for this. I'm bowing, holding up my unborn child lol
This is great. I finally have an mvs and ss1, and am enjoying it very much.
Amazing work. You deserve more than 900k views!!!
Amazing documentary thank you so much Sir for sharing this breathtaking work. Warm regards.
This video was quite insightful. Very well put together.
Great job!! Thank you for the work. :)
Amazing video, full of nostalgia
There's no sound after 1:24:01 . It doesn't come back until 1:25:58 .
one of my cherished games when I was a kid, I tried to finish their backstories it was so surreal, but not all I can, games get difficult if you continue and expensive using tokens. My favorites are Haohmaru, Nakaruru, Ukio, Hanzo, Galford especially the disappearing wood and plasma blade, and so many others there's this arch nemesis of Maru Gengio? the starsword weilder, plus you can choose to play slash or bust with different techiniques and choose different color costumes as well. there's even the novel I bought then the manga was so beautifully drawn
Thank you! It was amazing!
Man, thank you so much for your hard work! Top quality! 👏
Excellent video documentation of the history! I love playing this series of games and wasn't aware of all the releases, wan-fu was my main in the first two installments but was saddened when he was dropped in later versions. The game mechanics and features got way too complicated and it was hard to find arcades that offered it. Now through ports I can play the anthology and the latest game is like coming home. Thanks again n I subscribed after watching this video! Cheers
one of my best favorite arcade fighting games with final fight worldheroes and so on
Caffeine Nicotine is Dakuwa from Ninja Scroll the movie. Is it safe to assume Haohmaru is Jubei Kibagami as well? Genjuro was Jubei's friend turned rival in Ninja Scroll. Very interesting indeed.
I saw nicotine as dakuwan for sure but haohmaru is jubei? Didn't think that or any character for that matter.
Samurai Showdown forever!
Awesome documentary!!
