  • 1994 Porsche 968 Convertible review by The Straight Pipes. The Porsche 968 is putting down 236 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0L 4 cylinder. Would you take it over a new Miata or an original Boxster.

Had a 968 Club Sport in the 1990’s over here in the uk. The 3.0 4 cly had great torque, counter balance-shafts and VANOS variable valve timing. More responsive than 944 turbo. Some of the electrics were a bit 80’s but the CS looked and drove like a smaller 928 GTS. I replaced it with a Boxster 3.2 S , which was a better car all around. The best ones were, of course, not the the one available in North America and that was the Club Sport. Which was like an RS version that was stripped down and lighter racing version. The 968 ClubSport versions however go for $70K+, while a Tiptronic cabriolet with a 100K miles will be under $20K typically.

Nissan Sentra had a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. You're likely mixing that up with the available 3.5 liter V6, the VQ.

They just wanted to know how poor people are doing, so instead of buying one Miata, they built their own. 😆 hope my next car content will be as good as yours :)

One of the largest NA inline 4s ever produced if I’m not mistaken.

little bit heavier than a miata tho. I've had a 944s, 944 turbo, and a 944s2 convertible- they used to be pretty cheap! I paid $3000 for the 944S, $5000 for the turbo, $3500 for the S2 ;)
they handle really well, good weight distribution with the transaxle. Good cars for LS swaps, too- turbo clutch can handle the torque, and the aluminum block LS weighs about the same as the iron block porsche 4.

My 1987 8V 944 had the same stock rev limit of 6500 rpm. However, with an aftermarket performance chip upgrade, it went tro 7500 rpm on premium gas with the stock valve springs with a much improved midrange torque curve. It would outoull V8 Mustangs of the day. With an added fuel ionizer, it achieved a zero emissions status and 34mpg highway economy (37mpg with a particular fuel additive). These mods were done in 1990 and were never published.

Yeah, I test drove one and was totally turned off when we put the top down. You can't see nothing out the back. I don't even think the rear view mirror worked. All you could see was that black fabric. I guess you would have to get really good with the side mirrors.

Well, that was different. Very passive-aggressive. As a Porsche guy, it aggravated me to hear the 968 compared to a Miata. Yet there were some great comments made about its build quality and driving dynamics, all good to hear. Yes, the coupe is more attractive. The cabrio built upon the group of 944 enthusiasts that liked the final two years of the 944 that finally offered a cab version. This, along with the 928 sadly died in 1995. The 986 Boxster came along and boom, major cash flow and Porsche is what it is today because that money helped spawn the 955 Cayenne! A success story for a company that almost filed bankruptcy due to a recession, a war and a weak dollar! Btw, the 1987 944 was the first Porsche (I believe the first passenger vehicle) to offer an airbag. It was driver’s side only!! I’m looking forward to more Porsche Classic reviews…a Miata? Come on. An SL, ok. Same ballpark at least. 😊
