  • Come along on a 2 minute test flight of a Sport 3 135 late on an August evening at Malvern Aerotow in the UK.
I was clipped in at 85kg so in the upper half of the recommended range but this gave for great handling (much more 'sporty' than the 155 is for me) and I didn't really notice a worse sink rate (vs the 155). It is said of the Sport 3 that it still has a great sink rate even over-weight and I would agree with this based on this test flight.
There was still a bit churned up air on tow and the odd bit of thermal activity around but not enough for me to really play in thermals to report how the 135 compares to the 155 (at my weight) in that regard.

    Harness: Woody Valley Libero
    Vario: Digifly AirPRO-Pitot

My wife loves her little S3-135, her roll reversal speed is way faster than me on my S3-155

Have you flown more on 135 ever since? How was your thermalling in light lift compare to 155? My hook in weight is same as yours and I fly Sport3 155. However, I feel like I’d like to be my next wing a bit smaller.

I have flown the 135 a few time and prefer it over a 155 and I weigh 77kg (170lbs). I love the more responsive and crisp handling and I really don't feel I lose out on sink rate. I can fly it for longer compared to the 155 as it takes less muscle to control and I feel happier landing it in spicy conditions at the end of a long flight. Approach and flare speed are fine.
I reckon the slight loss in sink rate in a really scratchy thermal is made up for in how much more control I have so I can exploit the lift better. The end of this crash flight I was maintaining at ridge height in probably 6-8 mph wind so that shows how good a sink rate the 135 has even at the top end of recommended clip in.
On this flight I had a 'normal' HG harness but I normally fly with a lightweight setup (Libero with a light reserve) that only weighs 6.6kg (15lb) inc carry bag. So my typical clip in is around 86kg (190lbs) with drinking water and glider bags etc in the harness as well. Saying that, on this flight I didn't have water or the glider bags on-board so clip in was probably about the same.
