  • After watching our quail nest for nearly 5 weeks, the family is ready to leave the safety of the yard and venture out into the wild. Most babies are not even 24 hours old. Here is their journey from one end of the yard to the other. This took nearly two hours in real time... here are the highlights in just 9.5 minutes.

The animal world can be cruel. The parents do not want the sick chick to slow down and endanger the rest. You see the male actually attack his baby. When they all leave the little sick one is not there anymore

Yup. Healthy quail chicks can move quite fast at just one day old. Unfortunately, birth deformities and injuries, such as splayed legs, are common. It's very likely that the slow chick in this video had splayed legs. It happens when their baby legs open too wide and rupture, leaving them to drag themselves to get around. They usually die as a result, or as in the case of my rescued Gambel's quail chick, I brought him in to live in a palace! His name is Elfrid.

@@rommelrivera1186 I wonder why these people didn't at least take the chick to a rescue facility. Splayed legs are very easy to rectify.

@@rommelrivera1186 I wonder why they didn't at least take the outcast to a rescue center rather than let it die in the hot sun. Splayed legs are very easy to rectify.

That bird didn’t have splayed legs, that’s really something you only see in incubator chicks, and a splayed leg chick can’t stand up at all and certainly could never run or walk across a yard... I just hatched out 3 dozen valley quail, they are on their feet and pecking within about 15 mins, but they tire very easily and rest often. That little guy was probably one of the last to hatch and needed a few more minutes to get his strength up. Both male and female quail are devoted parents, and I’ve never seen or heard of them culling out their weakest chicks..this father certainly didn’t attack any of his chicks, I did see him run over to the tired one and make sure it was ok...

This is bad property owner. Imagine the chick has no way to go. The yard is fenced with very tight mess. Baby quail need food and water immediately right after hatching. They got stuck there and starved to death. Give the poor animal some food. Why don't you see they got trap in a dire situation? Don't be so cruel. I hate to see that.
