  • #SustainableAgriculture🌱 | Coconut contains untapped resources, previously considered as waste, which could be used locally, offering a promising solution for farmers, plant nurseries and even aquaculture farmers. Trials involving the use of coconut peat and coconut fibre aim to end dependence on potting mix imports and replace plastic ropes used especially in pearl farming and which cause pollution, both at sea and on land.
French Polynesia’s Department of Marine Resources and Department of Agriculture are testing innovative initiatives, particularly on Raiatea, where Thierry Lison de Loma is using his farm as a testing site for producing potting mix from coconut peat. On Taha'a, pearl farmer Aymeric Champon is testing ropes made from coconut fibre to replace plastic ones.
