- If you're a follower on my Facebook, you know I got this really weird yellow schmoo leak on the front of my engine. Here's what it is! Anyway, what I particularly like about oembimmerparts.com is that they've really chosen the parts they are selling wisely. Nice video. +1 on the oem gaskets. Learned the same lesson with my Ford engine. Went cheap and got a leak within a year. My old Bimmer mechanic used to refuse to put certain stuff on my car back when I was paying someone else to do my work. He saved me money in the end by using better quality parts. I was working on the ccv issue and simply relocated a new unit to the driver's side firewall via a self tapper and small angle bracket. Works great with no oul can or bypass. Easy to get to from now on!

Had the same kind of deal with my 4 week old OFHG. Bought an alleged OEM gasket on ebay. Fitted it when I got it. FOUR weeks later oil pizzing out again worse than before. Original gasket was leaking because it had plasticized but it wasn't broken. This new one has literally DISSOLVED at te breach point. Anyway, fitted a new one from the BMW dealership spares shop. See how that works out. Also bought a Victor Reinz one in case the BMW one fails. If they ALL fail I am going to fit a paper gasket. Old school.
BTW. There are 6 bolts holding the OFH on to the block. Don't treat them as a 6 group for tightening procedure. Treat them as a 4 group (compressing the gasket interface) and a 2 group (the bottom 2 that support the alternator / steering pump end). What I mean by that is if top two are 1 and 2, middle two are 3 and 4 and bottom two are 5 and 6 then tighten the top 4 first in a 1, 4, 2, 3 pattern 1/4 turn at a time until they are at their specified 18 ft/lb torque. Then insert 5 an 6 and tighten them to 18 ft/lb. Why? Well, looking at the way the new gasket had failed (bolt 2 corner), it occurred to me that it might be possible that the OFH could warp over time and be able to rock about 3 and 4. Not so much as you might notice but enough to make a difference when torquing the bolts. For example, if you were to tighten them all leading with 5 and 6 then it might just be possible, when you get to 1 and 2, to reach 18 ft/lbs BEFORE the gasket is as compressed as it needs to be. Know what I mean?
Anyway, that's my diagnosis on the failure. It might explain why so many have to repeat this repair so soon after dong it.

I too am a sato massicus and enjoy self torture with these cars. Who knows, maybe one day I'll recycle them back into the soda bottles and beer cans that made these cars. Great 👍 I did that on oil filter housing it’s damn frustrating changed from agent seal it’s leaked then reseat it again and it leaked again so switched to after market I forgot the name of that it’s a bit thicker but it’s solved the problem and it’s leak free

Interesting that your oil filter catridge was laying bottom of the oil filter housing.
Typically when i lift up that cover, oil filter is attached in oil filter housing cover.
Then i re-install new filter for cover, press until you hear that thump sound that is secured there.

I did an oil change recently... now my oil light flashes, I did change the sensor on the bottom of the oil pan a couple years ago, any idea why the oil light flashes?

BMW e46 in late 2010s providing enough DIY material alone for a UA-cam channel. Great videos! As my 2002 e46 is getting quite old and not that valuable im gonna start fixing it myself. To save some money but most for the heck of it. Like someone said on the Finnish Bmw forums: e46 is not a car for day-to-day use, the car is a hobby!

Customer came to my shop pissing oil from the filter cap. The o ring was there but it had to been the original . It was flat and hard. 2001 330ci
Offtopic. But i read about "pop and bang" with a remapped ecu. Not a big genius with ecu's. But maybe worth makin a video about it?

I just bought a bmw 325i 2005 e46. It has 160k miles what oil should i use. I believe its recommend to use 5w30 Castrol full synthetic but should i get hi mileage or just regular full synthetic

Please help me , my Bmw 325xi is consuming oil, very highly, no leaking and no white or blue or black or any color smog. Runs fine like champ, just the oil is leaving the car (😆) please help!!!
Just found that the Vacuum Pump seal at the back of the motor is not sealing and the oil is coming out there and on to the exhaust. I have been using many liters of oil the last 3 months Using about 500mls every 600 kms..
My early e46 4 door only has the splash panel and no reinforcement plate - used n the M/coupe and maybe the Xis. So for cars like mine there is a circular hole in the splash panel for where the front jack point is.
You've got the triangle shaped bars that tie the subframe to the body. They have a jack point on them. They don't collapse. I really prefer this design. Dunno why they changed it, I guess they determined they needed a skid plate but I wish it was build a little stronger.
Hi Jason. I recently inherited a low milage 2002 330xi from my family. Thanks a ton for your videos. They are pretty much the only thing on UA-cam I have been watching. There is some oil on the lower rad hose and also the thermostat electrical connection. I had the oil changed before I drove it East - approx 2200 miles - and the oil level does not appear to have changed. There is nothing on the exhaust manifold and there is no oil that engine mount bolt. I'm thinking that that part of the valve cover gasket is gone. Appreciate your thoughts, dude. PS, you are a dude!
Maybe it's old? Maybe rinse it off with degreaser and water and see if fresh oil returns.
When my heater hoses leaked, it dripped down and mixed with oil just like that.
I put a piece of wood on the jack before jacking it up. I don't know if it actually helps though.
jostube06 find a friendly Canadian and use their hockey puck.
You can buy special BMW jack pads that are essentially a hockey puck with a slot milked that fits the indent that he has flattened with his jack.
Regarding jack up the car. If your car is rusty, NEVER trust the jacking points, especially not on earlier E36. Lower down your car on your jack stands and find somewhere to put your jack too.

Ray Pooley hey Ray, it's Armenh7 from E46fanatics. I said that because victor reinz has a reputation of making terrible valve cover gaskets so I wouldn't really trust using it in a hard to reach area like the oil pan gasket. I'd rather spend the extra money and get a genuine BMW

Didn’t you use a Viton ofhg gasket in a past video and recommend them? They were supposed to have superior reliability, is that bullshit?
Dave Nagy it was replaced again after that video. I’m not sure any of the ofhgs are made of better rubber though. The replacement vanos seals are.
@@50sKid what about just using RTV gasket sealant? Or maybe the standard gasket with some RTV to help seal, like is recommended when doing the valve cover gasket?
Why do we always wipe off the dip stick when putting it back the last time? I mean we pull it out and wipe it off, put it in and pull it out again to check the oil level and then wipe it off before replacing it. I do this all the time - habit I guess. I assume many of you out there do the same?
Because there is typically oil splashing up into the tube and getting higher on the stick than the actual oil level and messing up the reading. So you want a clean reading every time

I have a BMW 328i, and I used Castrol Magnatec, but i started the engine when was cold, and I heard knocking, for a few seconds. I Think the castrol not too good quality. I have to replace the oil,slowly. What do u think from the Liqui Moly?

Whatever brand of oil you use, it must be LL01 graded. Read the label first. All oil is not the same
I used pennzoil period. I am a true believer of it, I used it for around ten years took the oil pan off my bmw 528i because my son hit a curb and cracked the oil pan and I swear it looked brand new inside no gunk or reddish color on the pan. I changed the valve cover gasket, same thing no reddish color on the cam, rocker arms, chain nowhere. My car has 310,000 miles on it and it still looks like brand new on the inside. I use pennzoil on everything I own now. I see that the bmw formula 1 cars are using it as well now and I see why

1 question tho: Do you know the torque spec for the engine oil drain plug and for the differential drain and fill plug ? I know, I should be able to feel when to stop, but still I'm curious and a bit perfectionist. I couldnt find it online

Engine oil drain plug is 18 ft-lbs torque.
engine : depending on thread of oil drain plug : M12 x 1.5 - 25 Nm; M18 x 1,5 - 35Nm ; M22 x 1,5 - 60Nm ;

What do you mean the holder?
Maybe he means the oil filter cover. Varies with the model I think.

People dump them at 100k for a reason. That being said they are nice when older but just need more work. My e46 is from 1999 and at 197k but the transmission is starting to go. Other than that I've really enjoyed the car.

Thank you for the info and help you give! Much appreciated! I though after seeing this video I would share info about a very misdiagnosed oil leak that needs to be known about on the E46 M3 version. I`m not sure if the other E46 engines have this same "CPV" Valve on them. But in the case of the S54 engine it's missed by a lot of Mechanics and the leak is thought to be the oil pan gasket or main seal etc. In my case they said main seal was leaking but NO. Those jacking points are plastic and will break and crack (ask me how I know). You should use Jack pads

In europe, the M54 take 6.5 L oil including filter.. What's the difference in us spec M54?
I think he meant quarts ....
7 quarts is still too much. That's close to 6.7 L + the oil that not came out of the engine.
Well he put in 7 quarts and he said it was not enough so buy 8 to have enough to top off if need be. I'm guessing it's the same as European models that take approx 6.5 litres but remember he had the oil filter housing off and changed the filter and had the car level. It all makes a difference when you have to fill it back up.
8 quarts is 7.5 L..

and you added 9 quarts but the engine takes 8. how does that work
He added 7 - the large container is 5 qts and 7 qts is the correct (actually 6.9) for the e46.
