    there is something very satisfying and mesmerising watching these old Capri posts, the whole process off taking apart, cleaning and putting back together..... love..... But as much as I love the background music from Radio2 it may come back to bite you, youtube is very good at picking out music, it happened to me on my Magnum leisure centre youtube post had lost of no1 hits from the later 70s only 3 to 5 seconds each and it picked them all up, ended up I had to remove some of them... thought I'd let you know.....

      Thank you carsos, well i learned about this today. After i uploaded Part 3b, youtube emailed me warning me about a 10-15 second part in my video about copyright infringement!
      I deleted the video, and had to go back and re-edit (silence the particular song - which was poop anyway =) and re-upload..
      It's fair i guess... Just a pain in the rear end!

    This is such a blast from the past for me, i started spannering on my dad's 1981 Ford Taunus with a 1.6L OHC Pinto engine in it.
    I even 'tuned' that engine. i Swapped the god awefull VV carb, dizzy and stock cam for a Capri 1.6S setup (90hp instead of 72hp)
    Good times!

    Mate, i have watched and subscribed from the first video, I love that you are attempting this job yourself too, but I have to say, while you have the thing dismantled as far as you have, why not go the next step and do it right ?. At least remove the sump, pistons, put in new rings and big end shells. Lap the valves while the head is off and clean it up properly, you never know, you might find you have a good engine already. And, please don’t use the, decades old timing belt and tensioner if you do try to start this !.
    I used to work on these a lot, back in the day, and they are a well made, strong engine that were built to last. If you’re planning on restoring the car, keep it original.
    Watching these videos takes me back and I can’t wait to see this engine run again. Great content, but, for me, a little cringeworthy also.
    Good to see you are learning and researching as you go along, you already know much more than you did before you started and that’s what life is all about.
    Already looking forward to the next instalment.

      Hey Thanks Kevin.
      I'm enjoying sharing what i'm doing with you chaps here on UA-cam. That's where the biggest part of the fun i'm having with this lies really.
      As i said, this is far from a pro, serious rebuild. I'm enjoying the half-wit , care-free attitude i'm giving it, so why get anal about perfection?
      I tried that once before, and it didn't work out.
      If the capri somehow needs a good engine to match the rest of the car and it's use, it will get it.
      Maybe you can bolt a nice 2L OHC for me??!!! = )
      Thanks for your comment, support and tips mate : )

    Back in the mid to late 80`s i had three MK1 Capri`s, they were the 3000 E manual, a 3LTR GXL auto and a 3ltr GXL manual. All were great fun and its good to see you bring one back to life even though its a 1600 or is it a 1300 ?. Dude lap the valves in and stick some valve stem seals on other wise its gonna smoke and run like a bag of shite, just saying. Love what your doing and keep up the good work.

    I like your safety shoes, i really hope something don't fall on any of you feet. You really need to regrind all the valves in, with grinding paste as you will probably have no compression on two cylinders as the valves seats will probably be rusty from the valves being open, get yourself a valve spring compressor and i can see that your collets are rusty that holds your valves in.

    I’m enjoying this video series, I’m no expert, I think the bottom end would benefit from a rebuild as it could last longer than you think. Not sure what your plans are in the long run. Keep up the good work, and continue using this as a learning experience. Will look forward to your future videos. All the best. Steve.

    The Pinto is a great (if not a little agricultural) engine. Second only to the Kent Crossflow in my eyes. I'm rebuilding a 1.6 litre X-flow at the moment and it's a peach to work on.

      It's still stored under the cover, outside, on the drive, which is not a long term solution for it.

    This is painful to watch! A crowbar on the belt tensioner, etc. You really need to strip the head, new oil seals, lap the valves, etc a bit of effort now will save so much later on. As this is not the original engine, and cyinder 1 has a leak, it might have been better to swap the engine. A reasonable pinto is not expensive.

    I'm a bit late with this and only watched a few video's, so don't know yet if this car ever started. This is really puzzling to me. I can understand some of it, freeing the engine etc but the rest is just doing my head in. I can get the budjet build thing but come on a few gaskets, oil seals here and there wouldn't break the bank. Also a few cheap pullers,spring compressers etc would be worth it in the long run. There must be a few mechanics looking in horror at this. I admire your determination and have a go attitude but a little pocket money spent on a few essentials would make a huge difference lol

    How rusted is the car? I hope it's in better shape than the engine! The engine is newer than the car, I'm not familiar with British vehicles, but that engine looks like maybe 1980s. The short studs under the rocker-arms on the other side from the valves adjust valve clearance, free those up and find out what the specs are. The people who tell you to use grinding compound on the valve-seats are right, the valves won't seal properly if you don't "lap" them in. You'll be taking that head back off again because there might not be enough compression. Cheers from the USA, my friend :-)

    • @Classiccarbscouk
      @Classiccarbscouk  5 років тому

      Thank Dave. Yes, this is not the correct engine for the car. That has been lost.
      So, this is what came with the car, and from an economical point of view, we're trying to see if we can get it to run again..
      And yes, I think the valves will need lapping, and the clearances adjusted on the rockers/followers.
      Thank you very much for your input, it is much appreciated.

    Nice new number plates, what I would do with the rear one, to avoid holes where you don't want 'em, make a transfer plate, out of either stainless, or plastic. Copy the hole pattern from the transom panel onto the centreline of the transfer plate. then put your own hole pattern on the number plate, (either on the centreline, or not) and replicate that on the transfer plate, using countersunk screws, and cup washers. That way you can avoid unsightly holes going through characters on edges etc. You may be lucky and the holes in the transom fall perfectly between the characters on the numberplate. Either way sweet plates. Verdict - I think you will get it running, though I would say it will be a tad asthmatic! - What capacity is the Pinto?

      I had one a few years ago, but a house move changed that! : )
      I do have a bead blaster, but i can't use it to clean these 'scrapyard' as it will contaminate the media and cock up the other stuff i do.
      Thanks for the suggestion however : )

    good way to wake yourself up much better then a mug of coffee or can of monster just wire the battery up wrong gives yuo that jolt you don't want,
    oh dear that a lotta lime scale in the theoms housing not good darn you hard water area's!! oh want to save that crank shaft thingy it had ford on it not that common to see on that mostly cus they got replaced but other ones that gave more grunt or power,
    wow that was a gasget seal wonder if that was factory or the 2nd one look to be factory as it stayed in one piece,

    I hope you don't have the alternator connected, or I think you just fried all the diodes when you put the battery on backwards.

    • @Classiccarbscouk
      @Classiccarbscouk  5 років тому

      James, what/where are the diodes?
      In any case, i will take it they are now cooked..

      I added some weird stuff on the cam... not sure about the graphite powder! The colloidal graphite is good though.

    you should put the whole top in a bath of rust remover before putting it together. so the lifters and springs get clean.

      Come off it ...the point is if you're going to do something at least do it right first time so it's rescued. Yep it's a ford so itwill run on pig swill but that won't help it in the long run.

      @MegaDirtyberty 5 років тому +4

      @@dee106ful The point is it will run and likely will run for many thousands of miles with only oil/filter changes and basic maintenance. If you don't think so then get in touch with the guy rebuilding this engine and offer to pay to get it rebuilt for him, that way I would imagine you would be happy the engine was 'built right' and you don't need to bleat on that he is doing it wrong and it's a "pile of shite".
