I built this bartop arcade machine based off the old Tempest machine from the early 80's. It plays old spinner games. Most of the material I used was scrap: the wood was leftover from a poker table build, an old 4:3 LCD monitor, control interface came out of an old project, and an the guts are an old work desktop destined for the recycling. I left out some of the process - like a LOT of wiring, all the computer and front end setup, resizing the graphics, attaching the marquee graphics, front glass, etc.
The spinner is a Turbo Twist 2 from Groovy Game Gear.
The graphics were printed by Joe Szabo from Szabo's Arcades. Great service, I could not be happier with his work.

This is absolutely my favorite UA-cam video by far only because it is an amazing build
And this is my favorite childhood arcade game!
I don't even know how many quarters I put inside this freaking game growing up
Nicest spinner bartop I've seen man!
Thanks!
A10Pilot I used to watch the a-10s fly into Davis Monthan in Tucson. Great plane.
I love the triangular shape you chose for this table top!
Thanks - it comes from the original tempest arcade machine style
A great build of one of the greatest video games ever!
Thanks!
Simply Amazing!
This video keeps me attached to the screen like an idiot. Great Job!!!!
Idiot? I'd say as a very smart person! Thanks!
Great job! It came out awesome. You made that look effortless. Tempest was a favorite of mine in the arcade.
What a sweet looking unit! Great build and a fun video to watch.
Great build vid. Also - "the right tool for the job" has never been expressed in video so well.
Lost & Found Travel thanks!
Amazing job! It was really nice to see you build it...
Thank you!

Just brilliant. Loved the sanding....hilarious.

This is beautiful. You don't really see many bartop versions of Tempest around. Nice work!
Great work. Something I'd like to make one day.
Very slick...nice work!
What a lucky kid!
Wow. This is outstanding.
Impressive. I own an original Tempest arcade game, and this looks\plays just as good as the original.
Amazing Job

I've been looking at bar top machine s and this is my favourite I just love the shape and graphics and if I was to build one that is what I would be aiming for great build love it
So cool.
Tres beau boulot !
Buena herramienta y buen trabajo. Felicitaciones.
This is awesome. Great job dude.
great job!
Real nice
awesome!
I might try a 4:3 monitor for my vertical cab seeing as it runs your Time Pilot nicely... I've made my own arcade game game... no that's not a mistake... the game itself... basically a Star Force homage and I'm making an actual arcade cab for it and my 16:9 vertically orientated monitor seems a tad elongated for my shmup... so seeing your 4:3 in such a wonder will make me think again... and re-jig my code to accommodate the new resolutions... anyway wonderful stuff
That's awesome how can I try out your game?
Nice job buddy
Your definitely a master craftsman. But the problem with recreating Tempest is the vector graphics, without them you’re only emulating.
Amazing 😮 For those of us who lack the skills, knowledge, and tools, does anyone make these for sale?
beautiful!!
Thanks! Working on another bartop now.
Some serious skills here, and theres me worrying about drilling plexi😂
nice job dude!
Hi, Great build, also what type of laminate did you use for the sides?
Very nice build, I built one myself using the dimensions you provided in the video. I cant find any high resolution scans of the side art control panel overlay or marque to finish my project. Can you tell me where I can get those, that is all i need to finish. Thanks for the great video and the inspiration to build one of my favorite childhood quarter cruncher s.
SO AWESOME! If you ever want to sell one let me know! nice work!
I don't recall Time Pilot uses a spinner.
Really great work ! How did you locked the control panel ?
Wow. This is an amazing design! I can't tell you how many quarters I spent playing this game. I would love to make the exact same design. Is there anywhere I can download your specs to build?
Joe Pepsico the original schematic is at jakobud website. Google it. I cut it down to a bartop by using a ratio to reduce the dimensions
Excelente 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thats awesome! How did you make/get the cabinet decals?
I modified the artwork for the regular size cabinet to fit the smaller dimensions and had them printed by szabosarcades.com. He was awesome to work with - if you give him a ring let him know I sent you.
You have some major woodworking skills! I just have a question: Is it possible to make a mock-up like that out of cardboard?
Hotshotter3000 I’ve never done it in cardboard but I don’t see why not
Great build, but that off-center hole for the spinner is driving me nuts!
How do you think I feel?
Regardless, fantastic build! I'm a new subscriber, but love this series of builds. Where are you located?
Thanks! but would you have templates to make side art and control panel art?
I know this video is old and all but were do you buy the decals
where did you get the decals from please?
Did you do the Dead Kennedy's logo in masking tape?
jh1328 someone finally noticed!
Haha I noticed that and the Caps and Nats gear. I'm in DC so the combination of nerdy greatness, woodworking, musical references, and rasberry pi-ness made this an easy subscribe.
This is one of my next projects. I like your build but curious about what you used for the spinner hardware
Sara Thomas I had it in the description. it's is a turbo twist 2 from groovy game gear.
Oops, I didn't catch that. Thanks!
Great looking bartrop i love tempest. Would it be possible for you to share the dimentions of the cabinet?
Thanks - pause it at 0:17 seconds. Those dimensions are in inches. I used plans from jakobud's website, and then reduced them to fit a bartop size.
1-- Would you please tell me where can i have this buttons and sticks .we have no local supplier here in egypt . 2 tell me about cpu and the windows system 3 game programe software .. Thank you
nice build... do you play hockey as well? saw the sticks in the background
extendedplayarcade my son plays. Check out my hockey stick table build. It's on my channel.
i'll check it out... no pun intended... and yes I still play hockey.. great way to keep in shape!
Cool! Did you use Dell 2007fp monitor ?
Awesome craftmanship. What was the all-in built time?
Christian honestly I don't know I didn't really keep track of it and I worked on the project in small batches of time.
How you did the vezel, painting a glass or using vinyls?
Awesome work by the way!
Jose Pablo Márquez I used some black card stock, cut it to fit between monitor and sides, then covered it all with gray tinted plexiglass.
Hi DirkMade
congratulation for this beautiful borne arcade.
I'm building a similar one but I have a problem. I can not find the files for artwork. I find only impressions all ready and too big.
can you help me?
Thank you Bau42
Can you build one for me like that, i'm willing to pay but it has to be two players
Zebtelatm You're willing to pay? How gracious of you lol.
I don't want to rain on anyones parade but this simply isn't Tempest.
Sensitivity for Tempest?
Anybody make a table top that would have Tron, Tempest, Marble Madness, etc.?
Okay, how'd you get Time Pilot to work with a spinner?
Jess Ragan I had to compile a special version of mame. Search for time pilot spinner at byoac forum and you’ll find the instructions.
How many inches is that monitor?
Facundo Gomez 17” lcd. 4x3 ratio.
How would you go about making one of these?
Chiptune Choir hmmm...watch the video?
@@DirkMade ... I mean the stuff he left out. He mentioned leaving out stuff like wiring
Chiptune Choir writing isn’t that difficult check out forum.arcadecontrols.com and find some tutorials
Which skateboard game is that?
Jason Burns 720
DirkMade Thanks! Which platform is that on?
Jason Burns it was an arcade game. I think it might have been ported to consoles but the original game had a very unique spinning controller that can't really be replicated in different hardware.
DirkMade The reason I am asking is because I also have a spinner on my arcade cabinet and that game looks pretty awesome to me.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Jason Burns cool this is mame but I don't remember which build exactly. You can use a spinner for 720 in more recent builds.
Dude >>> YOU SERIOUSLY NEED TO LAY OFF OF THE COFFEE :-)
