  • A tutorial for working 4-stitch cables (2/2 Left Cross and 2/2 Right Cross) with elongated stitches. This technique creates richly textured cables and is quite easy to work.
Briefly, on the row before the cable row, a yarn over is worked before each of the stitches that will be cabled. On the next row (the cable row), each of these yarn overs is dropped before crossing the stitches. The extra yarn from the dropped yarn overs creates elongated stitches that can easily be reordered without a cable needle.
Here are detailed instructions for 2/2 LC and 2/2 RC:
Row 1 (Set-up Row) (WS): On the row before the cable row, work a yarn over before each stitch that will be cabled. Here, I am working [yo, p1] for every stitch except the edge stitches.
Row 2 (Cable Row) (RS): After working the edge stitches, slip 8 stitches purlwise with yarn in back, dropping the 4 yarn overs as you reach them. You now have 4 elongated stitches on the right needle.
Next, for a 2/2 LC, insert the left needle into the FRONT of the first 2 slipped stitches, then pinch the 3rd and 4th stitches between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand as you slide all 4 slipped stitches off the right needle. Insert the right needle into the 3rd and 4th stitches, return them to left needle purlwise, and knit 4.
For a 2/2 RC, insert the left needle into the BACK of the first 2 slipped stitches, then slide all 4 slipped stitches off the right needle, holding the loose 3rd and 4th stitches in front of your work with your left thumb. Insert the right needle into the 3rd and 4th stitches, return them to the left needle purlwise, and knit 4.
