Very good video... My doubt with the hybrid turbos is.... Comparison of the k04-064 with the G25-660.... When hybridizing the k04-064 to be internally the same size as the G25-660 it is not weaker than the original G25-660? My hesitation is because of the exhaust back pressure that can be caused by the k04-064 turbine housing compared to the G25-660 housing, which is much larger visually. Am I wrong in this thought?
Thanks for the compliment - firstly this is NOT a hybrid. Our hybrid consists of upgrading the stock journal bearing turbocharger with our 7blade splitter compressor with other turbine modifications we do. This is a completely new turbo with revised AR on both turbine and compressor housings. The turbo has been in operation on various cars for over 3 years now running 1.8-2.1bar gauge pressure on various engines, built and stock bottom end.

From experience on various engines, the G-series turbos do not make the claimed power - in fact the claimed power in HP at the top of the Garrett catalogue does not match the compressor map flow in lb/min. I spoke with someone who used to work at Garrett and it was confirmed that they changed the multiplication of the lb/min > HP calculation on the G-series to 11 for the smaller turbos and in some cases by 12 - if you want a realistic lb/min value, divide the HP by 11 and some cases 12 - this is what you will experience in reality. You will notice that the exducer of the G-series compressors are really small, i believe in my opinion this is why the flow rates have dropped amoung other things.
No mechanical upgrades required to the engine per say. Just keep the boost low enough to stay inside of the max HP capability of the engine. You will need to upgrade cooler, DP and exhaust to extract any worthwhile power increase.

The 53049880064 (K04-0064) is a 100% bolt on replacement for these turbochargers. If you have a different vehicle, then this turbo wont fit -
Good question thank you - the housing AR's on these turbochargers are really small, and upgrading the compressor and/or turbine stage generates massive heat into the engine and intercooler, the result is definitely NOT a reliable one. We are able to upgrade these turbochargers easily, but we choose not to for the reasons above.
Are you local to South Africa? If so i have a tuner who does software for these turbos. Otherwise you need stage3 big turbo software - the K04 turbo software will not work.
Hey Turbo Direct, When you guys say 500hp I'm guessing that hp is at the wheels? According to the flowrate of the g25-660 it maxes at 60lbs/min, (roughly 600hp crank), so after driventrain losses, etc it should produce around the 500whp mark? Currently running at TTE420, but looking to build the engine in the future.
Hey Thanks for the comment, we never claim Wheel HP - because every dyno is different, and everyone uses different correction factors to "make their products look good" we work on factual information like the flow rate of the turbocharger in its assembled format with its turbine and compressor housings (with their AR values) working on a bench which we then measure the flow and can then confirm that the power the engine should produce (If it can use the air flow from the turbocharger) is according to the turbochargers ability. We also dont claim HP numbers based on the very tip of the choke line of the compressor map - we reference a useable vertical line INSIDE of the maps flow curve left of the choke limit - this is a safe, and realistic HP figure. If you make more on your said dyno - good for you, but what we claim you should not make less than.
Hi, really interested with this set up!! Currently I’m running K04 in my 2012 Q3 Quattro and looking to upgrade. Was considering the tte480 or go big with efr, probably 7163 or 7670 twin scroll. I believe this turbo is just better than the tte everywhere. Any thoughts on which turbo should I go with? Thank you in advance, and really appreciate that you still have something for the older (pre gen3 ea888) engines.
Without a doubt the EFR is leagues ahead of the TTE product, they not even in the same ball park. The EFR is obviously ball bearing and the TTE is not. Its not a fair comparison at all. I would definitely opt for the EFR over the TTE for less money too. It will cost you to make up the manifold though, but the EFR will outperform the TTE by far. Our product is Ball Bearing and competes directly with the other "hybrid" builds out there.
@@TurboDirectSA I’m very sure the efr would make way more power than tte, the only reason I’m still hesitant is the response. Would that big of a turbo be more laggy on a 2liter 4 cylinder engine..
@@TurboDirectSA nice video!! In fact that’s the first of many videos from you that I’ve seen about the efr turbos (including the long 2 part comparison with the g series). Honestly I was quite sure to go g series before watching them. For now your hybrid k04 just kicked the tte out of my short list, seriously considering it for my car. I think it’s gonna be a simpler bolt on solution than going efr and still making good power, just two questions I’m wondering now. 1. Why choose garret internals instead of efr 2. Price Can’t thank you enough for all the information n videos!!
@@youtubeviewer2919 Great comment and question thank you - th reason we chose Garrett was because this project started 8 months ago, and at that time we had already chosen the rotating assembly for the build as it was easier to accommodate than the Borg was due to the huge water cooling jackets on the Borg bearing housing, which would make the K04 baring housing impossible to reproduce as a direct bolt on as the physical dimensions would have to be increased past the ability to install the stock fittings, lines etc. Also the rotating assembly was small enough to allow the end housings not to have to increase in size that much that it would be impossible to install the rotating assembly into them without the housings being too big for the available geography under the hood.

Does this mean that this is a Garrett housing? The same goes for the manufacturing process of ALL turbochargers, 90% of the components inside a turbo are cast, foundries around the world ESPECIALLY in china will copy a product when they realise it has a street value, and they will rely on selling the product based on the markings they have copied from the original - so which one is the original, the chinese copy of the designers product? suppliers, isn't it? So the orientation can be different? Then how can we know what
orientation fit my vehicle?
@@人间指南-z8j The orientation will not affect performance at all. No ALL manufacturing locations use the identical Delta and Omega (orientation degree settings) data so there is never any alignment issues when installing.
Turbocharger work with part#'s specifically for this reason, so the Golf GTI Mk5 and 6 will use the 53039880105 and the IHI turbocharger (they are interchangeable except for the DV on the IHI unit is 1mm smaller in Diameter.
The 53049880064 (K04-0064) is a 100% bolt on replacement for these turbochargers. If you have a different vehicle, then this turbo wont fit -
Do you ship to USA? I need this.
We do yes. Please shoot an email to info@turbodirect.co.za for more info.

Any hybrid options for KO4-23?
Good question thank you - the housing AR's on these turbochargers are really small, and upgrading the compressor and/or turbine stage generates massive heat into the engine and intercooler, the result is definitely NOT a reliable one. We are able to upgrade these turbochargers easily, but we choose not to for the reasons above.
Hi, I got the ko4-23 on my 2002 1.8t s3 , will the ko4-064 be a straight bolt on ? Not sure if the bolt pattern is the same as the 2.0 heads?
Can we use k04 software with this turbo?
Are you local to South Africa? If so i have a tuner who does software for these turbos. Otherwise you need stage3 big turbo software - the K04 turbo software will not work.

Hey Turbo Direct,
When you guys say 500hp I'm guessing that hp is at the wheels?
@@youtubeviewer2919 It will spool as fast -- see here:- ua-cam.com/video/9tpqrXOzAyc/v-deo.html
1. Why choose garret internals instead of efr
2. Price
Can’t thank you enough for all the information n videos!!
You could make something similar for opel/vauxhall astra h opc/vxr z20lex k04 which is also not famous for its reliability.

Will this turbo setup work on a Revo Stage 3 car ?
Revo stage 3 software is meant for a K04 turbo setup
The turbo will work on any engine designed for the turbo to bolt onto it. The tuning is something that will have to be done after the turbo installation.

This a tbo ea28r turbo available on Alibaba or AliExpress for 800$ same exact one with same hardware, this is most likely just rebranded and sold for much higher price.

LOL - please go buy that product and use it. When it fails you, please share the pictures - we would love to share yet another failed unit next to ours and once again show why the cheap knock off chinese products fail due to lack of knowledge and poor quality components etc
@@TurboDirectSA The same turbo you showed us in training!! i remember when Chris showed us three of these failed chinese knock off turbos side by side to his, very poor quality when you know what to look for
@@sakkiebotha2416 Yes Sakkie same 3. What people dont understand about the chinese is that they use the same foundries as manufacturers do - often we get customers bringing in turbochargers that have the identical casting marks that say for example a Garrett T04 comp housing has on it (EC1, M27 etc) and yet the Garrett logo itself is ground off, the castings are identical, in fact the surface treatment and roughness is indistinguishable from eachother.
What never ceases to amaze me is the lack of common sense out there--- But yes you are correct same failed turbos you saw in the training session.
@@TurboDirectSA to be truthful with you i was not convinced about what you told me until i saw for myself what you meant. When you showed us the machine in action making your compressor wheels and showed us the finished product it was clear to me after that.
@@sakkiebotha2416 Anyone is welcome to visit us for a tour - we have nothing to hide.
Its just another turbo from TBO lol.
LOL - So many locals said the same thing till they failed - show me a balance cut on their turbos, show me what cartridge they use, have you seen inside the castings and the machining swarf......, have you cut any casting open and seen the wall thickness? And the list goes on.
TBO - i think not. not even close.
@@TurboDirectSA You have the exact same manifold casting with the "EA28R" which TBO uses.
@@TurboDirectSA The similarities is down to even the same chinese made N75 valve.
@@TheFoxho Like i said, have you seen our manifold? Have you cut out manifold open? Do you know how foundries and 'copy cats' work in China? Have you visited the 'manufacturers' in China?
Just because AR70 and M57 are cast into the housing does this mean it's Garrett? You are commenting on something you know very little about.
Our products are controlled with a high level of quality control, just because a marking or casting number or reference is copied does not mean that the product is genuine, the same, or not - Do your research.
@@TheFoxho How do you know the valve is made in China, and not Vietnam? Have you seen a Vietnam valve? Have you ever tested either or both these products before? Have you measured the impedance of these two valves side by side before? Do you know what the over current limit is on the two valves? Have you seen the MAC valves that are now being offered as copies by two of hundreds of copiers out there -these also 'look the same' from the outside but are so far from the same internally its scary.
