George Washington was born before Washington was a state (WA became a state in 1889). I think his portrait is on the flag because the state is named after him.
It should be noted some of these flags are controversial due to containing imagery of various Confederate flags. As another commenter mentioned Maryland’s was actually changed.

it's worth noting that Mississippi has since changed their flag to a red background with two golden bars bordering a dark blue bar in the middle that contains a white magnolia blossom and 21 stars. and i think theres a motto too.
@@andreask3218not quite sure but i do remember reading a bunch of articles about southern states changing their flags. i’m surprised tennessee hasn’t changed theirs yet
I could be off, but I believe I vaguely remember learning that the Union Jack was included in the Hawaiian flag not explicitly because of British ties to the islands (as despite them being the first europeans to contact the natives living there and established British business and trade, it was never a British colony/dependency/protectorate) Rather, after unifying the islands King Kamehameha designed the Hawaiiian flag this way to pragmatically ensure international respect, reverence, and safety for Hawaii , and especially for Hawaiian ships as the Kingdom aimed to modernize and engage in trade and dialogue with the outside world while avoiding potential exploitation and colonization....which they did for a while until...we showed up and overthrew their Queen 😐
pretty spot on! theres a lot of different theories behind why King Kamehameha made the flag the way it was. It is said each part represented an international relation; with the Union Jack, the colors representing France (and somewhat Russia), and the stripes representing the USA. There was some... shall we say interesting approaches as to how these relations aged. There wasn't a whole lot of respect for the native population and the islands were mostly used for profit once foreigners got a hold of land and government. It's also true that Queen Lili'uokalani was illegally forced from her throne. If you go to Hawai'i you can still see plenty of flags that represent the Monarch of Hawai'i. Beautiful flag.
The constellation on the Alaskan flag is called the big dipper (there's a small dipper as well). Edit to add: the small dipper is not on the Alaskan flag, but visible in the sky.
They’re looking to change the Illinois flag (my state) to something actually interesting that’ll make people want to hang it as much as the Chicago flag
Maryland - Yea we pronounce it Marilyn-d like Marilyn Monroe, but with a D at the end. We make fun of the Mary-land pronouncers HAHA😊. We love our flag way more than pretty much any other state. We put it on everything, and even our college football team, the Terrapins, has its uniforms based around the state flag and colors. I love your videos. I usually want to listen to them to relax and fall asleep, but they’re so interesting that it usually doesn’t work.
While Arkansas is often considered one of the more boring US states, it is one of the few places in the world with a diamond mine open to the public. Also has the name "The Natural State" for its beautiful state parks.

Mississippi didn’t abolish slavery till 2013. Edit: Also the current flag you see for Mississippi show the magnolia which is the states flower, the one you have in that books shows just how much Mississippi still wants to be the confederacy

Just a lovely cadence and patient nature that I loved in some of my educators.

I am so proud!
Mississippi has a new flag. They got rid of the “stars and bars” flag and have a much more beautiful and less problematic flag now.
The same happened in Georgia, didn't it?

2:05 Someone's definitely already pointed this out, but in the 16th century, Spain's flag was basically Alabama's, but the cross is serrated
Learning the US states is (for me) harder than learning countries in a continent. But with enough practice you can learn it easily.

Alabama's flag looks like the old Spanish imperial flag, la cruz de Borgoña
2:08 I think it’s because of the Spanish Habsburg flag, which was adopted from the flag of Burgundy.
