Why Is Google Struggling In Russia? Yandex

  • While Google has about 90% of the global market share for internet search, it is lagging behind in Russia, where the homegrown company Yandex has captured 55% of the market. Yandex maintains its dominance due to its superior Russian language search capabilities, its wide array of services beyond search, and the company's willingness to comply with the country's often restrictive local laws.
In all corners of the world, if you're looking to do an internet search, chances are high that Google is your go-to. But Google's domination hasn't extended everywhere, and Russia is one of the few countries where it lags behind. Here, 55% of the market belongs to the homegrown company Yandex.
Like Google, Yandex is so much more than a search engine. It offers email, cloud, and online payment services, streaming music, news aggregatio, and live traffic maps. Yandex.Taxi merged with Uber last year, and it is testing self-driving cars.
Basically, Yandex sure sounds a lot like Google. So why do the majority of Russia's 144.5 million citizens actually prefer it?

It is not "struggling". It is popular, and Yandex is too. Since when "not being a monopolist" is "struggling"?

great point! that wording had annoyed me too (( yandex has developed, reworked itself for a while and so from my point of view, it‘s popularity is gained absolutely legitimately. I wish Google to have more contest in countries all over the world, not to get to comfy in it’s monopolist position and for us to have alternative means of research 🌿

Moreover here in Russia we have a strong competition between mutiple internet providers, while in many European countries and USA it's a monopoly. That's considered to be one of the reason that internet in Russia is very cheap and high-quality.

Yeah we have a lot of internet providers but Rostelecom monopoly is bad. I live in the central district of S-Pb and still have to use ancient DOCSIS with 35Mbit downlink and hilarious 5Mbit uplink with only one available ISP Rostelecom. Of course there are mobile carriers modems for desktops, but those prices (but actually compared to western prices, ours are still really cheap)

    • @vladyarotsky5287
      @vladyarotsky5287 5 років тому +28

Yandex knows nothing about any "crazyfont" phenomenon neither does Google.
If you suggest crazyfont is the result of typing using the wrong layout (most common example being "ghbtn" that is "hello" in Russian) that contradicts with the video since Google has no problem deciphering that stuff. I am not aware of the name of this mishaps if there is some. Displaying text in wrong codepage is most usually called "кракозябры" (see also Wikipedia/mojibake) (literal meaning is vague but very probably it means little insects, bugs (literal not computer-generated in this case)). Also those are irrelevant to what was said ind the video. Transliteration is called "translit" and and is going extinct since installing Cyrillic keyboard or keyboard layout is extremely rarely a problem even abroad. Probably this part of the video is a result of some misunderstanding during journalist research.

Why do you allow Google to be monopolist in your countries? Google, Facebook and even Amazon are already dominates as internet services in your countries. Maybe there is some small alternatives, but no real competition for these giants at all.
As an IT specialist I prefer Google for my professional searches, but I happy that we have quite strong alternatives in our country. Because some Google services are just terrible, for example Maps, Yandex and 2Gis are much better than Google.

It is pretty simple, Europe is a US vassal so the US security services dictate to Europe and they just accept what they are told. Google has admitted to delisting millions of Russian sources on "request" of the US government so Europe automatically gets its sources restricted to those approved by the CIA. It has been that way for a long time in the US but now it covers most of the world except Russia and China which have alternatives for a wider view of the world.

Let me say smth as Russian. First of all, on most phones that come to our country officially, there is yandex search in browser by default. Secondly, we use their services much more than google's just because they are better, especially maps service - google maps are total disaster for Russian. Even weather service is sometimes more accurate. Taxi is of course popular but many people also use yandex's music streaming service and their affiche service for films, concerts and theatre events. Their ecosystem is good and too comfortable for russian just like google for american.
Honestly, we don't feel if google needs to push forward in Russia, believe me, their services are not getting better.

CEO of Russian marketing firm here. We use both engines depending on the type of search/interest - Yandex knows Russian, Google knows English. We use both platforms in Ad campaigns, although Yandex is much more transparent and convenient (Google can sometimes block your campaign and will Not Comment on the reason - VERY UNHEALTHY). I personally used Google a lot, and my Gmail is 15 years old...but! recent years using it is a pure pain in the ass: sometimes I'm forced to spend minutes verifying myself 10 times a day, Carl! More over, Chrome eats so much of my mac's resources so I'm moving back to Safari. And last but not least: Google is a huge deceiving machine. Google is involved in scandals and links with propaganda forces in the United States, they support projects openly dirty media (CNN, NYT, MSNBC etc...), do not allow other interpretations. Yandex does not do this, in its news release there are a variety of points of view, including opposition ones, but their issuance excludes outright garbage. Conclusion: use DuckDuckGo and your Brain. Alsom nobody uses Facebook in Russia because Facebook is crap. If it had any real problems - it would be blocked like Telegram. Well, guess what? It is not. And it never was.

I, as an Internet user from Russia, I want to say that I use Yandex more often than Google. Yandex is more optimized for our user, it is more local, and therefore more accurate and useful. Google has a good system, but Yandex is more convenient for me due to its customer focus. Also Yandex in Russia is a global system which can be accessed in almost any case. The scale of Yandex in Russia: you are looking for Yandex-column in Yandex market, asking a request in Yandex browser through "Alice", call Yandex taxi, pay for the order with your smartphone from Yandex via NFC and go home on the same Yandex taxi.
However, I think that such a system has its disadvantages. Monopoly is not good.

Living in Russia, I can say that it does not really matters for me which search engine to use. They both are quite good. I just use the search bar that is easier to find. When I need a little piece of information, I just type into google's search bar which was pre-installed on my android screen. When something bigger - I type in the nearest place in browser which can be yandex or google equaly likely (yandex used to be a homepage since the begining of the Internet in Russia). But in some cases it is necesarry to use yandex instead of google. For example, google always refuses to give me sites where I can get movies, music or games for free. So, which freedom of information are you talking about?

I’m from Bulgaria and use both Yandex and Google. Bulgaria uses Cyrillic but not to be confused with Russian. Yandex is good for general searches and stuff like that. Google is good at doing more technical stuff. However most services that Yandex offers are locked to Russia or something similar. I can’t use some of them outside of Russia.

I live in UK and use Yandex. That thing works like a charm. Cudos to them. As for Google, champion of freedom... don't make me laugh. They're all the same. Nice marketing trick Google. If I would be wearing a hat right now, I would take it off. I find Bing being way more accurate than Google by far.

The reason why 55% of search belongs to Yandex is:
    1) Later Yandex services may be included as an enabled by default installation option in some software that downloaded unlegally (Getting software by free is really popular in Russia).
    2) It has a very good services. They are really good for Russia (But I still using Google and have no Yandex products installed, excluding Yandex.Disk, cloud storage).
    3) People still think that it is better to use software made in their country.
I don't use Yandex (excluding Yandex.Disk, as I said above), but I think that it is really good.

As a Russian living in an English-speaking country, and having used Latin-script keyboards a lot to type in Russian, I have to say that the "CrazyFont" (actually referred to as "translit" in Russia) argument for "places with no Russian keyboards" doesn't really hold up that well. If you can blind-type in Russian or English, you should be able to blind-type on any keyboard, even if it has blank keys. The only people who use translit out of necessity (and not because they're too lazy to hit alt+shift) are people who don't have a Russian keyboard and can't blind-type or just type in Russian so rarely that they neglect to even install the Russian keyboard layout software on their computer. The same applies to smartphones, but, obviously, without even the blind-typing assumption.

Yandex is not purely a search engine, one big difference between these two is that Yandex also does offline business, like Yandex Taxi, Food Delivery, Employment agency, Home Service agency, Real Estate Listings, Yandex Money, Yandex Market their online store and they deliver goods etc. they put their hands into many business fields. Is it that good? They basically monopolize any business sector they want, set whatever rules they want, they just make an app and aggregate listings, promote it by dumping prices, they force vendors to have specific price range. Google is still better for search, Yandex is just like listings aggregation platform, huge, slow, but people don't have many options.

    • @MrPaukann

Yandex.market isn't an online store, it's a search engine stuff sold in online shops, their store is beru.ru .
